Page 1: Yasmin

I've analysed the first 2 minutes of "Yasmin" to pick out key features of the opening which I can use to develop my understanding of the concepts of British realism films. This knowledge can then be incorporated into my own work.

Page 2: Yasmin

The first 14 seconds of Yasmin are made up of titles and the film does not start until after this.

The first scene we see shows a run down community which suggests it is a low class neighbourhood. The clothes are simplistic but show the characters are religious, suggesting a theme of the film will be about class or religion.

This further shows a low class community and the racist writing on the garage saying "Paki Go Home" creates an enigma code, making the viewer think the film may show aspects of racism.

This establishing shot shows the film is setting in the country in a low class town. This sets the theme for the film.

The clothing of the people show this area is a religious community in England.

This shot introduces the main character and shows the contrast between her religious clothes and traditional English clothes. It is then when we start to understand what the film may be about.

Overall this shows me that in this particular film there are many hints, such as clothing and surroundings, to what the themes of the film may be. The social class is shown and images of religion and racism which allow the viewer to create an image of what is in the upcoming film.
