Deaths
Mrs. Sarah Shelton Yancey
wife of A.K. Yancey and daugh
ter of the late Col. Jno S. Farrar
all of Albemarle County Va
died at the residence of her
husband in the village of
Hillsborough on January
the 31st day of January 1875 at
4 oclock AM in the hope
of everlasting life.
She was a good wife, a modest
woman and an humble
Christian. She was candid
and truthful and would
not tell what was untrue even
in jest. And while she was de
voted to the usage of the M. E.
Church South she was liberal
and conciliatory towards those
of a different faith and she
had many intimate friends
among them chosen as such
not on account of their pos
tion in society, so called, but
because she believed that
they came up to the measure
of the standard of the scripture
of Divine Truth as nearly as
they could. The writer of the
above had her as his helpmate
for nearly forty years and
knew her well.
May God enable her husband
and children to follow her
as she tried to follow her
Divine Savior.

About This Transcription:
In 1983, during my first visit to the area of Yancey Mills,
my uncle, John Handley Yancey, noticed a sign on the lumber
mill located in Crozet on route 250 that read “R. A. Yancey
Lumber Mill”. We stopped and explained our family history
interest to Richard A. Yancey. He invited us to his home and
introduced us to his wife, Anna Boaz Yancey. She graciously
invited us in and after listening to us for a few moments, stood
up, quietly walked across the room and returned with the large
Yancey family Bible which had been in her possession for some
time.
The family records contained therein were a fantastic dis-
covery for us. This was the first time we were able to make a
connection between Charles Yancey and Charles’ parents,
Jeremiah and Margaret Mullins Yancey. In addition all of
Charles’ children by his first and second marriages were re-
corded. The delight of that visit and the hospitality of Mr. and
Mrs. Richard Yancey still remain one of the highlights of my
pursuit of Yancey family history. Not long after our visit, I re-
ceived in the mail a copy of a handwritten transcription of the
family records prepared by Anna Yancey.
In 2011 I returned to Crozet and visited with Dick and Jane
Yancey of Charlottesville who had obtained the Bible so that I
might make a new scanned copy of the family record pages. So
with the new scanned copy of the Bible, together with Anna
Yancey’s earlier transcription, and a request from Dennis
Yancey for a complete transcription, the preceding transcrip-
tion came into being.
I want to express my appreciation to Richard and Anna
Yancey for their love and sharing of family history. I also want
to thank Dick and Jane Yancey for obtaining the Bible for
scanning. And thank you, Sarah Yancey May, for making the
Bible available so that it might be shared more fully.
