Help show potential adopters the joy and love that can come with adopt- ing a pet and giving them a second chance at life. By Bev Greco CCSPCA executive director If you have pets in the house, the holi- days can be a true test between man and beast. Take for example all those adorable stuffed characters like reindeer, snowmen and Santas. No amount of reasoning can convince my dog that these are not part of her stash of toys. I have tried to explain to her that some of these are expensive, collector edition bears or sentimental gifts of Christmases gone by, or even that they may present a danger if swallowed; she remains unim- pressed by my arguments. They are fuzzy and therefore, fair game. Earl, my cat, embraces the tradition of holiday decorating as one of the true highlights of his little life. There’s a real tree in the house! A wonderful, soft, velvety blankie under the tree to snuggle on and adorn with as much fur as he can possibly leave behind! Shiny strings and dangly things hang- ing everywhere! From the moment the trailing strings of lights get hauled up out of the basement, his season of delight begins. Again, I am found trying to reason with a four-legger about the perils of electric cords and ingesting dangerous substances such as tinsel, holly and mistletoe. Even my threats of accidently setting himself on fire in the flickering flames of bayberry scented candles fall on deaf ears. He sits, staring at me, blinking eyes, bored as only a cat can be. My other cat and dog are much too mature and dignified for all this childish lecturing. They sit impassively, as though they could hardly be bothered with glass balls, chocolate candies or bringing the tree crash- ing to the floor. I know that, secretly, they are content and actually revel in the trou- ble the other two will get themselves into. Surely, at least one of those two imps will do something to deserve disfavor, resulting in banishment to a secluded part of the house. They delight in my disapproval of the troublemakers and bask in my praise for, unlike their siblings, being so well- behaved. Tips for keeping pets safe So, take these things as friendly remind- ers to keep your pets safe and your nerves steady during the holiday season: 1. Secure the Christmas tree. Falling trees and ornaments can cause your blood pressure to spike. 2. Keep tinsel, decorations and Christ- mas flora that can be swallowed, out of your pets reach. These can cause danger- ous and even fatal bowel obstructions or poisoning … in your animals, I mean. 3. Keep electric cords where they can’t be chewed and candles where they can’t be tipped or your pets can get to close to. Mishaps with electric and fire can really raise your homeowner’s insurance. 4. Last, but not least, keep food and alcohol out of reach — candy dishes, open trash cans and unattended drinks are real temptations for dogs, especially. Chocolate is bad news, turkey causes gas and drunken dogs are just an accident waiting to happen. Decorate, eat, drink and be merry. Just keep your pets safe while you do it. Shelter Needs: Canned cat and dog food, dry cat and kitten food, cat litter, paper towels, bleach, dryer sheets, sponge mops, gift cards from grocery, pet and hardware stores. If you have pets in the house, the holi-days can be a true test between man and beast.

Take for example all those adorable stuffed characters like reindeer, snowmen and Santas.

No amount of reasoning can convince my dog that these are not part of her stash of toys.

I have tried to explain to her that some of these are expensive, collector edition bears or sentimental gifts of Christmases gone by, or even that they may present a danger if swallowed; she remains unim-pressed by my arguments.

chocolate candies or bringing the tree crash-ing to the floor.

I know that, secretly, they are content and actually revel in the trou-ble the other two will get themselves into.

Surely, at least one of those two imps will do something to deserve disfavor, resulting in banishment to a secluded part of the house.
