Youth Arctic CoalitionBreaking the Ice: Inaugural 2014 Conference
Welcome delegates!
The inaugural conference of the Youth Arctic Coalition (YAC) marks the beginnings ofaction, change, and the opportunity for youth to express their ideas and enthusiasmabout issues that matter in the Circumpolar North.
YAC is an independent global forum for youth to voice their opinions, makecollaborative decisions and declarations, and to work to influence the course of Arcticgovernance. The YAC aims to address the many challenges facing the Arctic throughinitiatives that connect, engage and empower Northern communities.
Breaking the Ice will include discussions between youth, scholars and politicians onareas of key concern in the North. Discussions will include, but are not limited to,Arctic governance, Northern-youth engagement, Aboriginal decision-making, andcommunity-based resource management.
The conference will also feature several presentations that promise to be inspiring andeducational: Geoff Green, Member of the Order of Canada and founder of award-winning, educational organization Students On Ice; Martin von Mirbach, Director of
WWF Canada’s Arctic Program; Johnny Issaluk, traditional Inuit athlete and culturalmentor; Nathan Cullen, Member of Parliament and House Leader for the NewDemocratic Party; Jenna Burke, Project Coordinator for the Congress of AboriginalPeoples; and John Crump, Co-Director of Many Strong Voices.
On behalf of the conference coordinators, I would like to thank everyone who helpedmake Breaking the Ice a reality, particularly the Directors and members of the SteeringCommittee who have volunteered hundreds of hours to the creation of this event.Thank you to all of the sponsors, partners and organizations who contributed to thetransportation, accommodation and venue involved in the conference.
