How to set up your ‘I’m Awesome’ folder and/or electronic I’m Awesome’ folder.

● Hard copy ‘I’m Awesome’ folder You could have a folder or scrap book and put all your work for your diploma in there. If you have anything electronic e.g videos, you could make a note in your folder of where it can be found. You could add photos of your work as well as written evidence. Remember to make it look AWESOME!!!

● Electronic ‘I’m Awesome’ folder (‘e-I’m Awesome’ folder)  You could save all your work electronically in a folder on a memory stick and bring it into school in September. You could save it in folders for each core activity and elective activities you have chosen. Be creative! You could add videos and photos to make it look AWESOME!

You could also do a mixture of both, be creative, have fun and remember we want to see your best self!

Record of awesome activities -

● Biddenham recommended reading list – Year 6 into Year 7

This selection of books is a guide for children moving from Year 6 to Year 7. There are various genres to cover all interests. These are not books studied at Biddenham, however, they are books that we recommend for many reasons, including: gaining a knowledge of a variety of genres; preparing students for some of the themes we might cover in year 7 and 8; and most importantly, developing reading ‘just for fun’. As a guide, an approximate reading age has been included for each book simply to highlight reading difficulty. That’s not to say that all books on the list cannot be read and enjoyed by all reading ages. However, it is important to note that some of the books contain mature themes; we recommend you use your discretion to select books that are suitable for your child.

Top Tips  ● The more you read the better reader you become.  ● If you enjoy an author read all the other books they have written.  ● Look for books in your favourite genre but don’t be afraid to try something different. ● If you’ve enjoyed a book recommend it to your friends  ● Give books a chance- you usually have to read at least 30 pages to get into a book. ● Don't forget you have Bedford library. They have a virtual library. Here is the link:

https://virtual-library.culturalservices.net/cgi-bin/bedford-cat.sh  ● Currently these e-books are also free: https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

YEAR 9 RECOMMENDED READING LIST for the advanced reader A few to try. Please be aware, the mature themes are aimed at 13 year olds – ensure you are satisfied with the content before allowing your child to read them.

● Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon - A genuine cult classic. A boy with autism investigates the “murder” of his neighbour’s dog. Funny, original and moving. A gentle novel, however, please be aware of the text’s use of swearing.

● Life of Pi - Yann Martel - Very accessible Booker Prize winner concerning oceanic, fantasy like, wanderings of a boy stranded at sea on a raft with some animals.

● The Book Thief - Marcus Zusak - One of my favourite ever books. Death takes an interest in an orphaned little girl. This Nazi Germany set novel is seeped deep in humanity and compassion.

● Animal Farm - George Orwell - The animals of Manor Farm find the pigs as nasty as the humans. One of the 20th century’s leading political satires.

Core activity - ‘Getting ready to go big’ challenges. While you are working from home, try and complete AS MANY of these as possible. You don't have to do all of them. As you complete the activities, write the date or colour in the box to help you keep track. You can paste any photos/links to your ‘I’m Awesome’ folder. This is the link to the electronic version: https://www.hachette.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/Getting-Ready-to-Go-Big-2020-1.pdf

Write a letter to your future self. You could put it somewhere safe to open in a year's time.  What is happening right now? How do you feel about it all? What are your biggest hopes and fears about moving school?

Write a letter to a teacher who has had a positive impact on your life so far. What do you want to thank them for?  How have they impacted on your life?

Make your own map of your neighbourhood. Identify key buildings, parks, statues, schools and anything else you can think of/that you notice. Perhaps use contour lines to show the height of different areas.

Write a letter to the reception children starting at your old primary school. Tell them the best things about the school and what they have to look forward to during their time there.

Have a conversation with the oldest person you know and make it into a radio or television programme. Or if you prefer, turn it into a magazine article with photos. Send it to the person you interviewed with as a memento.

Take your first name, or that of a family member/friend and write it vertically on different lines. Complete each line with something positive which starts with the letter given (for example strengths and skills they/you have)This could be one word or ten!

Write a Haiku - a 3-line poem (1st line 5 syllables, 2nd line 7 syllables, 3rd line 5 syllables) on what it means to be kind in school.

Create your own musical instrument using household objects. You could use items from your recycling, dried beans, elastic bands etc. Experiment with different ways you could use the items to create sounds.

Have a conversation with the oldest person you know about their life. This could be a grandparent, friend, aunt or uncle. Before you do, think about the questions you would like to ask, such as: Tell me about the food you ate. What games did you play? What was it like being at school? What was your favourite book as a child?

‘I am’ poem: you will be meeting a lot of new people and friends when starting secondary school. Write an ‘I am’ poem to introduce yourself. It should be a minimum of 5 lines and a max of 10. E.g I am excited to see my friends. I am nervous about the different lessons.

Write your own autobiography. You might include: When and where you were born, important events in your life and how they made you into the person you are now, things you would have done differently, if you had the chance and what are your hopes for the future.

Come up with three questions about the world around you that you would like to ask your new science teacher. For example, why does my cat have stripes?

Watch your favourite film or read your favourite book again. Write a letter to a friend explaining why you think that they should read it.

You will be studying maths at secondary school. Can you identify five times you have used maths in your daily life?

Write down three things you would do if a friend of yours was anxious about starting a new school.

You’ll study science at secondary school and you will need to understand about managing risk. Make a list of hazards when cooking dinner.

Create a powerful speech on something you feel passionate about. It might be a local issue, or something global or a topic relevant to only you.

Find a recipe and work out the ingredients needed for 30 people.

Write down three ways you can be kind to someone this week.

Learn to tie three different types of knots.

Design a flying car of the future, imagining you are

Design a new logo for your secondary school.

Turn a favourite song or story into a picture that summarises

Write a newspaper article persuading people why it is

English - activity 2: Lockdown poem example

Lockdown Life  “Stay at home and stay safe!” our leaders profess; “Protect and sustain our NHS!” The schools are all closed; pubs and shops shut their doors, Panic shoppers clear shelves - they’re out in their hordes.   Police on patrol - ‘social distance’ is key: Your ‘household’ the only ones you can see.  ‘Self-isolation’ for fevers or coughs. Fears measures are either too harsh or too soft.  But through all this madness and panic and change  And worry and fear that this new world’s so strange The Spring sun brings with it the candle of Hope Affirmation, assurance that yes, we can cope.  Because out of the chaos of panic and strife Climbs a calmer existence; a simpler life.  And stories of selflessness, kindness and warmth  Shine out through the darkness of negative storms.   The thousands of ‘furloughed’ that answered the call Volunteering as ‘key workers,’ taking the fall.  Captain Tom and the millions raised with his frame The clapping on doors - healthcare’s weekly acclaim.   And, safe in our house, the Boydens explored  All the things that we hadn’t had time to before.  Mummy and Joey found fun things to do And on Daddy’s days off he came and played too.

The warmth of a picnic outside in the sun,  The joys of hand painting and cardboard box fun. Tent up in the garden, dens built in each room, Watering flowers, so eager they’ll bloom.   The morning routine of ‘PE with Joe,’ Watching, with interest, Mum’s tummy grow.  Colourful pictures on pavements with chalk, Waiting for Daddy for our daily walk.   Rainbows in windows and dinosaur games, Baking, tree-climbing and watching for planes.  Catch ups with loved ones on video calls, Chasing Miri, the rabbit, around the hall!   The freedom to bake or read or hug Having the time to befriend a slug! Painting pictures to send out in the post Making faces in cheese or beans on toast!   Mothers’ Day breakfast and Easter egg search, Birthdays at home and on-line with Church. Paddling pool in the warm afternoons: Swimming with spiders and fishing with spoons.   ‘Lockdown’ is scary; at times it’s too much.  But it’s offered the chance to get back in touch  With what really matters and how time is gold; Now, as time goes on, onto that we must hold.
