Cheap dirt mover—I have trou-ble carrying a lot of dirt in a bucket or even carrying a load of weeds from the corner to where I can dispose of them. But I have discovered a much easier way to move “stuff.” I took an old ripped shower curtain out to the flower bed and put all the old dried stems, etc., from last year’s growth on it and dragged it to the compost heap. It was a lot easier than carrying that heavy bucket. Then, I used the same shower curtain to move some of the compost to the garden and to the flower beds. I can put on the amount I can drag easily and not have tracks all over the yard. Cheap fix for an aging gardener.
Skeeter-free ditches—Summer means mosquitoes and lots of them. One cheap way to clean standing water such as road ditches and low
spots of the larvae is to use a little bit of cooking oil—maybe 1/4 cup in a road ditch. Just drizzle it on top of the water and it spreads to cover the surface and smothers the larvae so they cannot hatch into more skeeters. A reader says this does work. Their kids used to take a squirt bottle and put a few drops into any old buckets or tires that had water in them—sure cut down on the buggers!
Mouse and rat getter—Get your-self some instant mashed potato flakes and put them in a flat plastic dish with a pan of water next to the potato flakes. The mice and rats will eat all they can hold of the potato flakes and then drink a bunch of water. The taters swell in their stom-achs and since they can’t upchuck, the flakes swell up and they die.
I think if I was going to try this, I’d do it in the barn or a shed because nothing stinks worse in a house than a dead mouse-type critter and natu-rally, they are going to go hide if they are sick. The barn cats could find ‘em easy.
Cut and scrape soother—If you get a small scrape or nick working in
the house or yard, an easy soother is simply a dry tea bag soaked in cold water for a few seconds and placed over the cut/scraped area. The tea will stop the bleeding.
School supply timing—I start saving a few dollars in a jar (usually change) as soon as school lets out for the summer break By the time it rolls around again, I have enough saved to pay for all of the children’s school supplies at the back to school sales. I can get big packages of pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons and even markers for them at bargain basement prices. I save a lot of money this way because the prices always double as soon as the sales are over with for the year.
(You can’t buy a new backpack with the change, but you can get a lot of stuff to fill it!)

The Scout (405-28) follows a traditional style brick wainscot-ing and a columnar entry, with contemporary touches like the octagonal window in the master bath and the doorway windows in the entry.
Inside, this well-appointed plan provides excellent traffic flow from the guest entry, as well as the garage entry, into the rest of the home. The entry also offers a unique alcove to display collectibles or a favorite paint-ing. The master suite is located on the opposite side of the home from the secondary bedrooms. This design is becoming increas-ingly popular with parents want-ing to give their children more freedom to play their music and have friends over without being disruptive. A full bath is located at the end of the hall, close to the bedrooms, while a large linen closet is just across the hall from the utility room. A window in the utility room, and the counter space below it, make the task of folding clothes more enjoyable.
The kitchen is integrated very well into this open plan. Ample cabinet space and a large pantry are balanced by an open pen-insula with the sink and dish-washer on one side and a raised eating bar on the other. More than enough room lies beyond the eating bar for a large family dining table. The great room is
brightened along the rear wall of the home with large windows, and a patio door leads outside for enjoying nice weather. The space is large enough for many furniture arrangements, accom-modating a family’s constantly changing needs.
To the right of the entry is the den with a door entry near the master suite. The spacious room could serve as a formal enter-taining room, a movie room or an office. The master suite at the end of the hall is quite large, and features double sinks in the dressing area, separated from the rest of the bath by a pocket door.

At the end of the eight-mile hike to the top of Half-Dome in Yosem-ite National Park, we came face-to-face with the metal cables that would guide us to the top. Our whole group had hiked for hours, but when I finally saw the cables I refused to climb them, feeling it was dangerous and that I might fall 2,000 feet to my death. Watching my friends climb to the top, I started to feel embarrassed. Then, someone came behind me and said, “I’ll go with you.” Our group leader had pulled back from the group to make sure that I would not be left behind or fall off the cables. I slowly made it to the top, and we celebrated at the summit.
In today’s reading—the account of Jesus’ appearing to his disciples after the Crucifixion—Thomas stubbornly refused to believe his friends’ testimony that they had seen Jesus. In doing so, Thomas separated him-self from the rest of the group. Then, without warning, Jesus showed up.
In times of doubt, it can feel as if God is absent. But like our group leader who helped me get up the cables, God comes to us even at the height of doubt. When we are ready to turn back, God whispers, “I’ll go with you.”
Prayer—Loving God, thank you for your persistent love that brings you alongside us even in our difficult and painful moments of doubt. Amen.
Thought for the Day—Even in my times of deepest doubt, God is present.

Pulled-Pork Sliders with Bitters
Servings: approximately 14 small sandwiches
Ingredients:Chili rub:2 tablespoons Angostura aro-
matic bitters2 tablespoons chili powder1 teaspoon salt3 to 3 1/2 pound boneless pork
shoulder roast1 tablespoon cooking oil
Bitters sauce:1 can (15 ounces) unseasoned
tomato sauce1/2 cup packed dark brown
sugar2 tablespoons Nature’s Intent
apple cider vinegar1 tablespoon Angostura aromat-
ic bitters1 tablespoon chili powder3 large cloves garlic, chopped1 to 2 tablespoons cornstarch
(optional)14 small slider buns
Directions: 1. To make Chili rub: Stir together
aromatic bitters, chili powder and salt; let stand 10 minutes.
2. Cut pork shoulder across grain into 1 1/2-2-inch thick slices; trim excess fat. If needed, cut into chunks to remove some fat.
3. Rub meat with chili mixture. In 8-quart pot or 9- to 10-inch wide, high-sided saute pan with lid, heat oil. Add meat and brown on both sides, about 15 minutes total. Remove meat and place on plate; keep warm.
To make Bitters Sauce: Combine tomato sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, aromatic bitters, chili powder and garlic cloves; stir well. Pour into hot, empty pan. Simmer 5 minutes, stirring and scraping bot-tom of pan.
Return meat to pan; spoon sauce over meat. Cover and cook 1 hour and 15 minutes on low, rearrang-ing meat halfway through cooking. Transfer meat to plate; cover with foil to keep warm.
To thicken sauce, if desired: Let sauce cool in pan 5 minutes then whisk in cornstarch. Bring to boil; continue to cook and whisk until slightly thickened.
To serve: Pull meat apart with two forks or fingers. Serve warm on buns, drizzled with sauce.
Orange Butter Sponge CakeIngredients:8 ounces butter, plus additional for buttering pan2 cups cake flour, plus additional for flouring pan1 tablespoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt2 cups granulated sugar4 large eggs1 teaspoon vanilla1 tablespoon Angostura orange bitters1 cup freshly squeezed orange juicePowdered or extra-fine sugar, for dustingDirections:1. Heat oven to 350 F.2. Butter and flour two 9-inch cake pans. Sift flour three times and add baking powder and salt. Set
aside.3. With electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and creamy, about 10 minutes. Add eggs one
at a time, beating well between additions. Add vanilla and orange bitters.4. Divide flour mixture into four portions. Set electric mixer on medium low and add flour alternately
with orange juice, starting and ending with flour. Mix just until incorporated after each addition.5. Divide batter evenly between cake pans and bake 35 to 40 minutes, or until cake pulls away from

George Carlin said there were seven dirty words.
But George never worked cattle with my dad.
Bless his heart.I know there are people out
there who have worked cattle without a curse word passing their lips. They’re the same peo-ple who have smashed digits in gate latches as a mama cow is barreling down on them in the alleyway without so much as a whimper. They see storm clouds gathering over freshly raked hay and they just shrug.
I am not now, nor have I ever been, one of those people.
Let me let you good folks in on a little secret. My language arts skills aren’t always used for good. The same creativity you enjoy in this space every other week can be used for evil at the flip of a switch.
I know. I should be more ladylike and gentile. I should be mindful of my language because “little pitchers have big ears,” and “only crass people use crass lan-guage.”
Believe me I try. But there are moments when only certain vocabulary will do.
That moment when I go to hit “save” on a final edit of a 40-minute podcast and the com-puter locks up, requiring a hard restart and losing every single edit. That time when the black steer erupted out of the squeeze chute and tackled me off a step-ladder onto the cement floor, narrowly missing the camera. Or, the few brief moments that I cross paths with snakes in the course of my work.
All acceptable times for filter removal.
I try not to curse too often and I’m typically mindful of the surrounding audience when I do choose to let the vocabulary fly.
As far as my nephews and niece know, their Aunt Jenni really must like “fudge” and “sugar” an awful lot. And there’s a lot of “Bless your heart” tossed in for good measure. And I’m going to keep it that way as long as I can.
Look, there’s a reason curse words are called “salty language.” It’s because much like too much salt spoils the dish, too many of those words spoil the mes-sage that you’re trying to com-municate. The public discourse stops in its tracks the minute you throw a curse word into the mix simply because no one can hear past their pearl-clutching.
That’s why, for the most part, I try to live by the rule that my dad impressed upon me when I was a teenager and testing the limits of accepted word choices under his roof. Basically, there were three criteria to grudgingly accepted usage of curse words:
1. Some one is bleeding or on fire.
2. Some thing needs encour-agement to operate.
3. Publisher’s Clearing House just stopped by with the big check and balloons.
That last one never happened. But I can imagine if it did, there might be some inventive vocab-ulary choices on my dad’s part that would make George Carlin proud.

The hero of my childhood rode on ahead this week. When I heard it on the radio, I could barely speak.
My memories took me back to when I was a boy. I rode the trails of childhood with my cowboy hero, Roy.
He was King of the Cowboys, and Trigger was King of the Horses, and I was King of the Vacant Lot when me and Roy joined forces.
I never missed his picture shows whenever they came to town.
Me and my buddies were on the back row, just a’ wolfin’ popcorn down.
Roy and Dale and Gabby were always in the right, and when they ran in to outlaws, you can bet there was a fight.
Ol’ Roy would never kill ’em, but he’d put ’em on the run. He’d give ’em a right good whippin’, then he’d take away their gun.
Roy always helped the good folks, and then he’d go to singin’, and Trigger’d go to dancin’, that snow-white tail a swingin’.
Roy was always out on the trail, just livin’ his life free. He stirred the imaginations of a bunch of kids like me.
I don’t know how he did it. Only the good Lord knows how a cowboy livin’ on the trail could always wear clean clothes.
He set for us a standard. He was honest, brave and true. We all wanted to be like Roy and do what he would do.
Now that he has left us, I don’t think of him as dead. He just took off on Trigger, and he’s ridin’ on ahead.
And ol’ Trigger’s just a dancin’ and flaggin’ that snow-white tail, and I know that trail they’re travelin’has to be a Happy Trail.

The salty art of the curse word

Summer and fresh, juicy melons are a perfect match. However, the recent multi-state salmonella out-break linked to precut melons is an important reminder that safe han-dling and preparing of watermelon, cantaloupes, honeydew and other melons is very important.
Most of us purchase melons at the grocery store or farmers mar-ket, so it is easy to forget that mel-ons grow on the ground, and they are exposed to pests and microor-ganisms from the soil. Outbreaks involving poorly washed melons, particularly cantaloupes, are not a new thing. For instance, in Sep-tember/October 2012, 261 people in 24 states were infected as a result of a Salmonella outbreak caused by
tainted cantaloupe grown in Indi-ana (http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/typhimurium-cantaloupe-08-12/index.html). The previous year, can-taloupes grown on a Colorado farm led to a Listeriosis outbreak, infect-ing 84 Americans (http://www.cdc.gov/listeria/outbreaks/cantaloupes-jensen-farms/093011/index.html).
What can you do to prevent becoming ill from contaminated mel-ons? Whether home grown, or pur-chased at the store or farmers’ market, use these guidelines to select, prepare and safely enjoy melons in your home.
Select a melon with no imperfec-tions. Damage to rinds can cause mold growth or other bacteria to travel to the inside of the melon.Before cutting the melon, wash your hands with warm, soapy water. Also, be sure equipment and utensils are clean and sani-
tized, including your sink.Next, wash the melon under cool running water and scrub the out-side rind with a produce brush, then dry with a paper towel. This may not seem important since you do not eat the rind. But when you slice the melon, bacteria on the outside of the melon are eas-ily transferred to the inner edible area. Using soap or detergent to clean your produce is not recom-mended. Produce washes are not harmful, but are not necessary. After cutting the melon, wash your hands again.Store cut melons in a clean con-tainer in the refrigerator at a tem-perature of 41 degrees F or below. Label the melon with the date and discard any melon not eaten within a week. Uncut melons do not need to be refrigerated.

The more color you put on your plate, the better—especially when it is purple. Foods with a rich hue, such as blueberries, grapes, purple cabbage or eggplant may help heart health, blood pressure and obesity.
Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study shows that adults who eat purple and blue fruits and vegetables have reduced risk for both high blood pressure and low HDL cholesterol, which is the “good” kind. These adults were also less likely to be overweight.
So, what makes purple foods so special? The magic is found in
the compounds that give purple foods their color, called anthocy-anins. They are antioxidants that help protect against cell damage and help reduce inflammation. Antho-cyanins are believed to also prevent some cancers and diabetes, and can improve memory.
While the benefits of purple and blue foods are widely known, they make up only 3 percent of the aver-age American’s fruit and vegetable intake. Here are a few tips to purple-up your diet.
Swap traditional iceberg lettuce for dark green, purple, and red leaves that boost the phytonu-trients and offer more flavor and texture.Blueberries are rock stars among purple foods. Enjoy them fresh
or frozen. Added to smoothies or oatmeal, they provide a pow-erful way to start your day. Enjoy them as a snack, add them to salads and baked foods, or make a berry crisp.Offer carrots in a variety of colors for your family to taste. Purple carrots are best served fresh or roasted as they will lose much of their gorgeous color when boiled.Look for purple varieties of com-mon vegetables at the grocery store or farmers market, such as potatoes, cauliflower and sweet potatoes. Use purple cabbage in any recipe that calls for green.Grow purple varieties of vegeta-bles in your garden like onions, potatoes, peppers and carrots.

If you freeze garden produce in the summer and fall, spring is a great time to clean out your freezer to get ready to store the upcoming season’s harvest.
If you have a manual-defrost freezer, defrost it at least once a year, or when there is more than a quarter inch of frost over a large area of the freezer surface.
A frost-free freezer does not
need defrosting, but it still should be cleaned once a year or more often if dirt or food residues are visible. To clean, turn off the power source (unplug), empty the freezer and wipe it with a cleaning solution of one table-spoon of baking soda per quart of water. Rinse it with a cloth dipped in clean water, towel it dry and replace the food.
Use a refrigerator or freezer thermometer, and check it often to ensure that the freezer tempera-
ture stays at or below zero degrees F. Foods lose quality much more quickly at higher temperatures.
Frozen fruits and vegetables are best when used within eight to 12 months of storage at zero degrees F. After these times, the foods should be safe, though lower in quality. Place foods in the freezer into food groups for ease in locat-ing, so you don’t forget the prod-ucts you have in the freezer and can enjoy the fruits of your labor at their best quality.

economic growth since 2011, uncertainty around trade pres-ents escalating concern to U.S. agriculture. Seventy percent of U.S. agriculture exports are to destinations that are in current negotiation or trade disputes, according to the most recent Rural Economic Review from CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange Division.
The shift from trade war rhetoric to reality tempers the optimism felt in the first quar-ter. Aside from potentially losing market share in emerging mar-kets, the U.S. may face shake-ups in historical supply chain com-mitments, as competitors seek new trade relationships amid current trade disputes.
“Trade concerns pose the
single greatest risk to the pro-jected global economic growth of three to four percent,” said Tan-ner Ehmke, manager of CoBank’s Knowledge Exchange Division. “The U.S. and China have been driving the growth, benefitting emerging markets around the globe. A trade war between the two is dangerous for economies around the world.”
Key findingsNew tariffs from China and
Mexico targeting agricultural products dampen the ag econo-my’s outlook. In mid June, China announced 25 percent tariffs on $50 billion of U.S. goods, includ-ing soybeans. Those tariffs are slated to take effect July 6 and may severely impact prices. Other specialty crops like tree nuts and grapes may also face lost market
share in valuable growth markets from escalating trade disputes.
Animal-based protein pro-duction is rising to record lev-els, requiring robust exports to prevent domestic markets from being overwhelmed. “This makes trade talks impacting export demand a central focus for the industry,” added Ehmke. “Pork producers may be the most wor-ried, as exports account for 25 percent of U.S. pork production.”
The dairy industry is beginning to see a few rays of hope as prices slowly climb and exports hit an all-time high of 18.8 percent of U.S. production in April. However, in retaliation for newly imposed U.S. steel tariffs, tariffs from Mexico on virtually all types of U.S. cheese are scheduled to ramp up to 20 to 25 percent on July 5.
Last year, Mexico imported
212 million pounds of cheese from the U.S., about 30 percent of U.S. exports. Further, the new trade deal between the EU and Mexico will change Mexican regulations on products labeled with protected names like asiago, parmesan and feta in order to comply with EU rules.
Drought conditions have expanded across the Southwest and more than half of California is now in moderate to severe drought. In addition, nationally, cost per unit of water has tri-pled since 1990, outpacing other consumer goods. A $106 billion authorization for rural drink-ing water and sewer infrastruc-ture programs was approved by Congress this spring to address water affordability issues in low-income households.
“Overall current market con-
ditions including rising interest rates, high fuel costs, relatively high land rental rates and little price relief from other inputs point to a decline in net farm cash income in 2018, continuing the trend from the past few years” said Ehmke. “This indicates the potential for increased debt load as the Federal Reserve considers three more interest rate hikes.”

Trade war takes a toll on ag economy

involving horses have received finan-cial boost for their equine objectives.
The Kansas Horse Council Foun-dation has awarded 15 youth scholar-ships to encourage education in the equine industry, according to The-resa Peddicord, KHCF scholarship committee chairperson.
Founded by the Kansas Horse Council in 2004, the KHCF, a non-profit group, has awarded $121,450 to assist youth interested in horses since formation. Available to mem-bers of the KHC looking to further their college education, scholarship selection is based on involvement, academics, community service and equine objectives.
The Kansas Horse Council Foun-dation is a 501 (c)3 charitable orga-nization whose mission is to provide educational opportunities to horse owners in Kansas.
Scholarships are awarded annu-ally and are funded through private donors and fundraising efforts host-ed at Equifest of Kansas as well as the Weary Family Foundation guided by Mrs. Dale Ann (Weary) Clore.
Equifest fundraiser activities include a silent auction, a raffle, and an art sale.
“The amount of scholarships relates directly to how much is raised,” Peddicord said. “We greatly appreciate all donations and are always looking for auction items and additional assistance.”
This year’s recipients include Emily Brightbill, Manhattan; Rachel Brown, Topeka; Collin Champagne, Perry; Jade Edwards, Hamilton; Caroline Gatschet, Topeka; Kinsey Griffith, Wakeeney; Alan Hinds, Lawrence; Isabella Hubbell, Topeka; Alyssa Leslie, Inman; Jacob Grin-stead, Hutchinson; Samantha Guy, Walnut; Madison Hetherington, Valley Falls; Sidney Murray, Topeka; MaRyka Smith, Hoyt; and Natalie Vesta, Clay Center.
Presentations were made at a recent banquet in Wamego. Rachel Zenger, secretary of the Kansas Cow-boy Dressage Association, spoke
concerning that group while inspir-ing the evening’s honorees about involvement in the horse industry.
“We would like to extend a heart-felt thanks to the late Bob Clore and Mrs. Dale Ann Clore of Manhattan for their continued support of the scholarship program through their fourth Weary Family Trust contribu-tion,” said Justine Staten, executive director of the Kansas Horse Council headquartered in Manhattan.
“Bob Clore was the original artis-tic creator of the Bud Newell award for outstanding service, given at the Kansas Horse Council annual meeting and banquet, since 1995,” Staten said. “Bob’s involvement with the Kansas Horse Council and the equine industry was long and vast, and he will be missed.”
Theresa Peddicord has served as the KHC Foundation leader since 2012 and mentored her replacements through the 2018 scholarship awards banquet, Staten credited. Peddicord
was presented a token of thanks for her seven years of service.
New leaders of the foundation are Liz Wine, Wichita, and Paula Wil-liams-Lamb, Basehor, while Staten serves as treasurer.
Susan Jaax of Wichita is the Kansas Horse Council adjunct director for the foundation. Pam Davis and Diane Taylor serve on the selection committee.
“The new ‘team’ will soon begin making plans for the Equifest of Kan-sas 2019 Foundation silent auction and art sale,” Staten pointed out.
Two incoming KHC collegiate liaison representatives were intro-duced during the banquet, Megan Irick, Olathe, and Emily Elfers, St. Francis, are students at Kansas State University and will serve for the next two years.
“The collegiate liaison of the Kansas Horse Council has a non-voting seat on the board to assist the executive director with social media,
to connect the board members with ideas and information influencing younger equestrians, and to pro-mote the Kansas Horse Council among peers,” Staten said.
“MaRyka Smith served as our first collegiate liaison for two-and-a-half years and is stepping down to con-centrate on dual doctorate degrees in veterinary medicine,” Staten related.
“A sophomore, Emily Elfers is pursuing a degree in animal sci-ence with a production manage-ment option and an equine science certificate. Megan Irick is currently a junior also pursuing an animal science degree with the production management option plus an equine science certificate.
“Both will take an active role in representing the Kansas Horse Council beginning in August,” Stat-en noted.
Mission Statement of the Kan-sas Horses Council is to “provide the Kansas equine industry with
leadership and direction through education, promotion, and public policy advocacy.”
Set goals include:Create and identify educational
opportunities that will enhance the abilities of horsemen/women to fur-ther their skills and knowledge of the equine industry.
Create and identify opportunities that will promote the Kansas equine industry. Support development and tourism within the state as related to the equine industry.
Create an atmosphere in Kan-sas, through public policy advocacy, whereby the equine industry has the ability to grow and prosper.

Tuesday, July 10Goodness, it’s such a catch 22. I
either have enough time to do the things I need to do (which means we’re doing nothing in the field) or I’m scrambling to figure out how to make it all work.
I’m behind on catching the world up on what we’re up to. I’m behind on paying bills. I’m behind on getting laundry done. Where do I start? But it’s like this because we’re working….and that’s a good thing. A very good thing.
We arrived in Limon, Colora-
do, with the second trip on July 5. We dropped the trailer house off in Hugo in a lot just off the city park. We needed to get the combine and truck to the farmer’s yard before those very dark, ugly clouds in the western sky decided to cut loose and rain (or hail) on us.
We drove back to Hugo (where the cottage was) and decided to “camp” there for the night. “Why don’t you search Google for a place to get a bar burger.” I did. I found the Plain’s Bar, which had decent reviews online. It didn’t matter, at this point. We just needed some-thing in our bellies and then we’d go back to the trailer house and sleep. We were both exhausted!
I called the number listed on the site and Jim talked to the woman who was working behind the bar. “Do you still have your grill on? We’re about 15 minutes away.”
Once we arrived back to town, we found the bar and went
inside. You know how it is when a stranger walks into a bar—all eyes are on you and you know they’re wondering who the heck you are. Once we found the booth we were going to sit in, the gentle-man at the bar sparked up a con-versation with the two of us.
The woman behind the bar (and also the same one Jim talk-ed to on the phone) came to the booth and told us our hamburgers were nearly done. “Would you like cheese on those burgers?” Jim and I looked at each other in amaze-ment. She took it upon herself to fry the burgers after the phone conversation ended. We were eat-ing in less than five minutes after we arrived. Talk about service!
We’ve been at it ever since (this was on Friday). The cutting condi-tions have been perfect for cutting wheat—heat, heat and more heat. As a matter of fact, it’s above nor-mal temps for this part of the world
(go figure). The crop is decent for droughty conditions. I was expect-ing to find less yield and test weight. It looks like the wheat we’ve cut, so far, will average about 30 bushels to the acre. The test weights have been 61/62 pounds per bushel.
I’m not sure if I’ve shared what the Garden City end results were
or not—45 bushel average. The irrigated pivots were weedy. They didn’t average as well as they should have/could have—maybe 45 to 50 bushels. The test weights for the pivots were poor. The oth-ers were more in the 60ish range.

Well, this is just cool! You can walk under the header to service. Don’t worry…the safety block was in place! I knew someone who had their lunch in the shade of the header. I was at his funeral several days later. That sort of stuff doesn’t ever leave your head.

Friday, July 6The other day I was deliv-
ering meals to the field and struck up a conversation with a few of the crew members. Our team comes from different parts of the world and this year the United States, United Kingdom and Netherlands are represented in the lineup. It is neat to learn more about where they’re from but also fun to hear their opin-ions about the places we cut.
You already know that the High Plains is one of my favorite regions
to harvest. The wide-open spaces, sparse population and wind-swept prairies are just beautiful to me and calming to my soul. I like to hear about what others think about the area that’s the name sake to the company, and on this day,
Tom replied with something to the effect of, “It is vast.”
Tom comes to us from York-shire, United Kingdom. He explains that “Yorkshire” is like a state here in the United States. He is from a farm that is a livery yard for horses.
He noted one thing different about here and there is when we talk about “old” in the U.S., it is not that old. For instance, the house his family occupies is from 1669. The building that houses the local pub is from 1307. He was kind enough
to share some pictures with me, so I could learn more about his home country. He was willing to let me share them with you online as well. Thanks, Tom.

Monday, July 9It’s still unreal to me that we had
nothing to cut in western Kansas. I didn’t get to use my Shelbourne header much in Kansas this year. Blue header time is one of my favor-ite times during wheat harvest. I’m disappointed.
We spent 4th of July cutting in southwest Nebraska. The wheat yielded 80 plus bushels per acre and the test weight 61 lbs. For the most part, the wheat was standing good but there were places where it was lodged. That meant slow and
low cutting. It also made for a really long day of cutting wheat.
We have been looking for more work until our next wheat cutting jobs are ready for us. I’ve driven many miles and visited many eleva-tors looking for work but have had no luck (yet). There is lots of wheat around that is ready to be cut.
There is quite the rotation of crops going on out west nowa-days. Some wheat country is now corn country. It looks to me like there is more corn planted than ever out here.
One reason to rotate crops is to clean up the ground if there are a lot of noxious weeds, volunteer rye, goatgrass and cheatgrass that grow in the fields and cause yield loss.
One thing about southwest Nebraska during wheat harvest time is that it’s absolutely beautiful out here.
