This famous song by Marlene Dietrich says it all. If you have been to Berlin once, there is always a longing to go back.Sehnsucht. This year's annual congress will take place in theMaritim Hotel in the very centre of Berlin between PotsdamerPlatz and the Kurfürstendamm. It is almost needless to say thatBerlin is a city with many attractions, famous museums,groundbreaking architecture, restaurants, nightlife and anintriguing history. Berlin has it all. Berlin is where east meetswest.

The developments in insolvency law in Europe are fast and extensive. Many EU-Member States struggle with ways toenhance rescue proceedings and create confidentialproceedings which may avert full insolvencies. The EuropeanUnion has made recommendations for new legislation. By thetime the Berlincongress takesplace, the revisionof the EuropeanInsolvencyRegulation willprobably havebeen completedand a new projectfor convergence ofcertain elements of insolvency law will be well on its way.INSOL Europe participates in these developments and maintainsits own projects relating to topics such as Best Practice Rules forOffice Holders. The technical program of the Berlin congress willbring all these issues together in a number of excellent panelsand interactive sessions with the audience.

Our Technical Committee is chaired by Piya Mukherjee (HortenLaw Firm, Denmark) and Renate Müller (Thierhoff Müller undPartner), assisted by Evert Verwey (CMS Derks Star Busman).The Istanbul 2014 congress received excellent feed back and our2015 Technical Committee is working hard to present a new andoriginal programme. INSOL Europe is the only pan-Europeaninsolvency organization with members in all EU Member Statesand virtually all other European countries. The Berlin congresswill again provide an excellent opportunity to meet old andmake new friends.

The main congress will be preceded by a conference organizedby the Academic Forum of INSOL Europe which is chaired byProfessor Christoph Paulus.

There was a very different motivefor the US-President to say this inhis famous speech in Berlin, butthere is always a good reason tocome to Berlin. The German capital,bursting with history, was, in thetimes of the wall, probably themost symbolic place to see whatfreedom is about and now, afterpeaceful but persistent people havebrought it down, a young city, fullof ideas, energy and creativity hasemerged.

From 1 to 4 October 2015 we want to invite you to Berlin for yet another reason, the Annual Congress of INSOLEurope. We are once again working on a technical program,appealing because of its diversity, as well as its rich insightsinto the world of restructuring and insolvency aroundEurope and beyond. Topics will bepresented by practitioners, judgesand academics. Focus this year willbe on two major themes:Harmonisation and Innovation. Bothare high on the agenda. The EUCommission is conducting athorough study of theharmonisation of insolvency lawsacross the Member States. INSOLEurope has taken up the role astorchbearer in drafting andadopting guidelines. Out in the fieldwe meet many challenges, especially of“modern” businesses with new innovative financialstructures, with intangible assets and with heavy reliance on IT in applying the current rules. Against this backgroundwe will discuss the benefits and limitations of harmonisation,

the challenges in the businesses of todayand also provide real life examples ofinnovative and creative approaches indistressed situations.

Rest assured that we will, as always,provide an appropriate venue for you to network and meet with old and newfriends. You should not forget to allow for some time, at least a few hours, tobreathe the air of one of the most vibrantcities in Germany, if not in Europe.
