FREDERICK DAWSON STONE, JR.

BORN AUGUST 7, 1872 DIED FEBRUARY 14, 1896

H E was educated at the Germantown Academy and the University of Pennsylvania, graduating at the latter institution in 18^3 with the degree of Bachelor of Science, and receiving the degree of Civil Engineer in the following year. Since that time he had held a position in the draughting room of the Pencoyd Bridge Works.

He exhibited great interest in all matters relating to engineering, and continued his studies in spare hours after graduating. He was a devoted alumnus of the University, and it was one of his greatest pleasures to follow the history of the college, the doings of the students and the successes of the athletic teams. His cheerful disposition, manly character and earnestness in whatever he undertook, characterized his whole life and made friends of all with whom he came in contact, at school, college and elsewhere.

A t the time of his death he was deeply interested in collecting materials for a genealogy of his great-grandfather, George Steele, and his descendants. I t was not his intention to publish his work until some future date, when he should have had opportunity to investigate the early history of the family in Englaud, and trace out its exact connection with the Steeles of the published records. As, however, his record of the family in America was so nearly complete, I have prepared his notes for publication, in order that the labor that he so earnestly devoted to collecting the information may not be

lost, and that those who are interested in the family history may have the benefit of it.

The main part of the genealogy is taken directly from my brother's manuscript, while the introductory pages I have prepared from numerous notes and papers which he had collected or copied.

THE ANCESTRY OF GEORGE STEELE AND HISTORY

OF HIS FAMILY IN ENGLAND

T H E Steele family came originally from Barthomley, Cheshire, England, and according to tradition the old homestead known as Taed Hall had been in their possession for five centuries previous to 1795. Many branches of the family are recorded fiom neighboring parts of Cheshire, such as SaDdbach (Claycroft), Weston, Yardley, Stych, Walnut Tree, etc., but our tradition makes the Steeles of Taed Hall, Barthomley, the original stock.

The ancestry of George Steele, the head of the present line, can only be traced back with certainty for two generations, as shown in the following:

to have been his great-aunt) Margaret Steele, evidently a sister of the owner of the first book, and identical with " Margaret Steele of Taed Hall, interred May 9, 1747, aged 92 years," whose stone is in the church-yard at Barthomley. Another stone in the church-yard is inscribed "John Steele of Taed Hall, Barthomley and Eleanor his wife. He died 16 Aug. 1708 aged 35. She 18 Aug. 175-i aged 85." This John Steele was perhaps a brother of Margaret, though there is no other record of him.

An inscription on a window pane at Taed Hall is "John Steele 1651," evidently of an earlier generation, perhaps the father of those already mentioned.

Shortly after the death of George Steele, his granddaughter Mrs. A. K. Witmer, now the oldest living descendant, wrote out an account of the family as it was told to her by her aunts, most of whom were then living, and her father John D. Steele. Subsequently the latter, some years before his death, wrote the "Recollections" of his English and American Life, which covered much the same ground but went into greater detail.

From these manuscripts we learn something of the history of the early members of the family.

George Steele's aunt Elizabeth they state was a woman " of lady-like and dignified manner, superior in scholarly attainments to the ladies of her class and clay."

John, his uncle, was educated for the bar, studied at Oxford and was for many years one of the trustees of Christ's Col lege. He removed to London and devoted himself to his pro fession, residing in the parish of St. Duustan's, Fetter Lane Both he and his wife were buried in Hackney church-yard

George Steele's brother John was " a man of taste and tal ent, a good artist and musician, and an accomplished penman.' His early life was devoted to agriculture, which he soon abandoned for the study of music as a profession. He removed to London, and purchased a property near Lambeath. His only child, a son, is supposed to have died soon after our branch of the family emigrated to America.

Elizabeth Steele, the sister of George, married a farmer named Lunt, and was early left a widow with a young family. She resided near Barthomley, and after George Steele's marriage and removal to Cuddington, she rented the Taed Hall property, where she continued to reside until it was sold. Subsequently the family again rented the place, and it is still (1895) farmed by her grandson, Joseph Lunt.

Another brother of George Steele is said to have died in infancy, and doubtless lie was the " John, son of George and Esther Steele of Taed Hall, interred on the 21st day of Feb., 1786, aged 5 years," whose stone is in the Barthomley churchyard.

George Steele, the head of the present line, was destined for the bar, and with this view received a classical education; but the death of his great uncle, Mr. Vernon, with whom he was to have studied, frustrated this plan. He therefore entered the counting house of Mr. Vernon's son-in-law, Mr. Mort, and after a few years was appointed agent for the management of property owned by Mr. Mort at Cuddington, about twenty miles from Barthomley. Here he resided until 1757, when he married Hannah Dutton and moved back to Barthomley.

The Duttons were an old Cheshire family, and owned much property at Cuddington, their deeds dating back to the Conquest. At the time of George Steele's marriage this property was held by his brother-in-law, John Dutton, but upon the death of the latter passed to his three sisters.

George Steele then moved to Cuddington to occupy his wife's share of the estate, and never returned to Barthomley.

John D. Steele upon coming of age fell heir to another portion of the Dutton property at Cuddington, left him by his aunt, Esther Dutton. By this time, however, his father's property had become very much encumbered, and he therefore arranged for the sale of his own inheritance and hia father's property at Cuddington, his life right in Barthomley having already been sold, and after settling all the family debts, took his parents and his unmarried sisters to America.

They left Liverpool, August 10, 1795, and reached Philadelphia on October 12th.

His brother, William Kirke, with his family, accompanied him on his voyage, as did also his sister Margaret, wife of Charles Stones, and her children. Charles Stones, however, did not leave England until a few days after the rest of the family, but taking passage on a faster vessel, arrived before them.

THE FAMILY OF GEORGE STEELE IN AMERICA

After boarding a short time with a Mr. Wallace on Second Street, the family moved for the winter to a farm house on the Old York Road, opposite to Thorp's Lane, probably the same building that now stands there, north of the Jewish Hospital. The following spring John D. Steele and his three unmarried sisters rented Hope Lodge, a property at White-marsh, Montgomery county, Pa., which they conducted as a dairy farm in partnership with Mr. Samuel Nash, while the Kirke family moved to a house on the Logan estate, near the Old York Road, probably the one still standing close to the connecting railroad, a short distance west of Logan station.

In 1805, John D. Steele purchased the property of General Eichard Humpton, in West Bradford and East Fallowfield townships, Chester county, Pa., comprising some 600 acres, known as " Stockport," but which he renamed " Stock Grange." Thither he removed with his parents and sister Esther, and his marriage occurred the same year. The Kirkes soon after moved here also, purchasing a farm on the Stock Grange tract.

Hannah Steele at this time married Mr. Nash, and continued to reside at Whitemarsh with her sister Sarah. After her death Mr. Nash remarried.

Sarah Steele married Jacob Harner and lived in Upper Dublin, near White Marsh, for some years, but on the death of

her husband, she moved to " Woborne," a house erected by John D. Steele on the Stock Grange property for his parents and unmarried sister Esther.

The Stones family resided in Philadelphia and at White-marsh. After Charles Stones' death, which occurred a few years after his arrival in this country, his widow lived for a time in Germantown, on the Main street, above Chelten ave.

John D. Steele's remaining sister, Mary Walley, with her husband and famity, came to America a few years after the rest of the family, and spent their first winter with them at Whitemarsh. They then rented a small adjoining property as a temporary residence, and subsequently purchased the farm in Chester county, near Paoli, which became the Walley homestead.

The above brief resume will show the places of settlement of the several children of George Steele after their emigration to America. Facts of importance relative to their descendants will be found in the succeeding family record.

TRADITIONS OF THE STEELE FAMILY AND THEIR

RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER BRANCHES

T H E manuscripts of Mrs. Witmer and John D. Steele give us several traditions of the family connection still earlier than any of the records that are presrved. The first of these is that during the Civil War of 1642-6 the family consisted of three brothers, two of whom were engaged actively in the struggle, though on different sides, while the third secreted himself and was supported by his family until the return of peace enabled him to return to his home. He was the oldest son, and proprietor of the estate, and it is from him that our branch of the

Page 12: y /^ ^~ (9f^„^0£uwvancestry.com/ReferenceMaterial/Files/Descendant_sof_George_St… · Elizabeth = — b. 25 Sept. 1732 • Lunt I I I I John Jo! b 29 Sept 1733 d. 1736 >hn = John

10

family is descended. " George Steele remembered to have heard the royalist brother described by one who had seen him as a very old man with an impediment in his speech, caused by a musket ball passing through his cheek. His long iron-hilted sword is still preserved in the family."

Captain Thomas Steele, who commanded Beeston Castle during the civil war, is known to have been connected with the family, but in what relationship is not clear. Some have claimed that he and his two brothers, Richard and George, were the three brothers referred to above, and that our branch was descended from George. There is, however, no likelihood of this, as these three were the sons of Thomas Steele, of Weston, and their places of residence are definitely known, while no mention of Barthomley is found in connection with any of them. The published records, moreover, show that other Steeles were residing at Barthomley all through their time. In fact, William and Richard Steele are recorded as having been murdered in the Barthomley church during the strife.

Another tradition is of some younger brothers emigrating to America, dissatisfied with their older brother inheriting all the parental estate. These may have been the uncles of the first Steele of whom we have a definite record, but this is merely conjecture.

The manuscripts also state that Bev. Richard Steele was known to be a connection of the family, and there seems little doubt that he belonged to our immediate branch.

His family and the Steeles of Sandbach have been mentioned in a great many records, and an outline of the latter branches is appended for comparison.

The above is abridged from Earwaker's " History of Sand-bach." Other published charts of this family do not mention the two sons Robert and Lawrence, but in the main agree with this. A careful comparison of records and dates fails to show any direct connection between George Steele's ancestors and any of the descendants of Thos. Steele, of Weston, so that we are forced to believe that our family is descended from another branch.

The ancestry of Rev. Richard Steele is not known, but it seems most likely that he was a cousin of Richard Steele, of Sandbach. and his presence at Barthomley makes it probable that he was more intimately related to our branch of the family than to the descendants of Thomas Steele, of Weston.

From his will we learn that he had several sons, John and Richard being especially mentioned; and a number of daughters, but we have been unable to trace his descendants further. (See Notes on Lite of Rev. R. Steele, Local Glean-inys, No. 9, March, 1890).

TAED HALL

" Taed Hall," the homestead of the Steele family in England, was situated in the parish of Barthomley, in Cheshire, about four miles from a small town called Wheelock, and near the present railroad station of Crewe.

I t was a freehold obtained originally from a certain Sir Gilbert Ireland, and entailed upon the oldest sou, the only rental being a trifling sum paid whenever a new occupant came into possession.

George Steele sold out his life right before emigrating to America, and upon his death the property reverted to Lord Crewe, the present Lord of the manor.

The house is said to be a very venerable mansion, evidently "built with the object of serving as a fortress as well as a dwell-

ing in time of need, as the door was extremely heavy and barred with iron.

One room was evidently intended for a chapel, as the walls were covered with quotations from the Scriptures in Latin, Greek and Old English. In the wall of one of the upper rooms was a secret passage-way and small chamber, while the bedsteads are described as large stationary affairs curiously carved and inlaid.

The arms of the family formed a conspicuous ornament on the carved oak paneling of the hall, the supports being savages, and the crast a bloody hand. They were borrowed from George Steele by the Steeles of the Walnut Tree, and never returned.

STOCK GRANGE

Stock Grange, the American homestead, is familiar to the majority of the descendants of George Steele, five generations of whom have passed many happy hours beneath its hospitable roof.

The house is situated in West Bradford township, nearly in the centre of Chester county, while the farm covers also part of East Fallowfield township. I t consisted in 1805 of some six hundred acres, which was slightly increased by a later purchase. The land had been very much neglected, and the whole north side was a vast waste of sumac bushes and briers; only three fields and the orchard showed any signs of cultivation.

A very old sunken log cabin stood at Woborne and another at Fallowfield, while the foundation of an old school house was discernable in the west end of the Barn Field, and a dam at the " Fulling Mill Rocks" marked the site of an old mill, an accompanying dwelling having probably stood a little above where for years there was an old apple tree. A log tavern stood on the western corner of Long-acre Field, which was burnt down by the scholars and teacher of the school before the arrival of the Steeles, in retaliation for depredations committed by the occupants.

Page 18: y /^ ^~ (9f^„^0£uwvancestry.com/ReferenceMaterial/Files/Descendant_sof_George_St… · Elizabeth = — b. 25 Sept. 1732 • Lunt I I I I John Jo! b 29 Sept 1733 d. 1736 >hn = John

14

The Stock Grange house consisted then of the back building which is now occupied by the farmer. A piazza ran across the east end, from which a door opened into the parlor, and another into the cellar under the workshop which was the only cellar there was. A dilapidated log barn stood near the site of the present barn, but there were no other outbuildings, all those with which we are familiar having been built by John D. Steele. Woborne was built immediately after the purchase of the property for George Steele, his wife and daughter Esther, and soon after the Fallowfield house was built for the Kirke family, who had purchased this section of the original farm. The main portion of the Stock Grange house was erected in 1817.

The earliest owners of the Stock Grange property of whom we have knowledge were a family named Leggett, who sold the farm to Mr. Marchington, a tory. At the time of the Revolution it was confiscated by the government, and was afterwards purchased by Gen. Richard Humpton of the Continental army, and an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati.
