OUR PLANET EARTH.

The planet Earth is only a tiny part of the universe, buy it’s the only place where human beings can live.

Today, our planet is in serious danger. Acid rains, global warming, air and water pollution, overpopulation are the problems that threaten human life on Earth.

Who is to blame for the disaster? The answer is simple: all of us.

Our forests are disappearing because they are cut down or burnt. If this trend continues, one day we won’t have enough oxygen to breathe.

The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste, chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The Mediterranean is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following. The Aral Sea is on the brink of extinction. If nothing is done about it, one day nothing will be able to live in the seas.

Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out for ever. If nothing is done about it, one million species that are alive today may soon become extinct.

Air pollution is another serious problem. In Cairo just breathing the air is dangerous-equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day. The same holds true for many Russian cities.

Factories emit tons of harmful chemicals. These emissions have disastrous consequences for our planet. They are them main reason for the greenhouse effect and acid rains.

An even greater threat are nuclear power stations. We all know how tragic the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster are.

Fortunately, it’s not too late to solve these problems. We have the time, the money and even the technology to make our planet a better, cleaner and safer place. We can plant trees and create parks for endangered species. We can recycle litter. We can recycle litter. We can support green parties and put pressure on those in power. Together we can save the planet and all of us with it.

WHY ARE WE SO EXCITED ABOUT THE INTERNET?

What exactly is it that gets us all so excited about the Internet?

As well as being a global network of networks, the Internet is a global network of people, ideas and information. The Net is as interesting and exciting as the people, organisations, companies, governments and weirdoes that are connected to it. There is another thing that’s exciting about the Internet. Like love and life, the Net is what you make it. If you don’t like what’s happening on one part of the network, you can build yourself a whole new cybercity, appoint yourself as mayor and run it exactly how you want.

The Internet enables you to do a lot of things simultaneously. You can read the latest copy of your favourite newspaper while planning your night’s TV viewing and ordering some cheap CDs from an American discount disc store.

You can send e-mail to someone you’ve never met before… Some people have «met»over the Internet and got married.

The first web browsers only supported simple texts and images, but now a multitude of multimedia plug-ins enables webpages to sing and dance.

From PC banking to online shopping and chats with celebrities, the Internet is already changing our lives. The arrival of digital TV promises even more exciting things.

SOFIA KOVALEVSKY.

In the 1800s, women could not go to college and have professions. Women who became doctors, scientists, and businesswomen had to overcome great obstacles. Many of these women went against laws, traditions, and the wishes of their families. However, they were dedicated to their work and made great contributions to the world. Sofia Kovalevsky was one of these women.

Sofia was born in 1850 in Moscow. Her father was a Russian general. Her mother was the daughter of a well-known mathematician. The family lived in a large mansion near St. Petersburg. Each of them lived in a separate part of the mansion. Her parents were very strict. Sofia didn’t think her parents loved her. She remembered this all of he life.

Sofia loved mathematics at a very early age. When she was 1 years old, she hung up notes from mathematical lectures on her walls. She also taught herself physics. A family friend thought Sofia should study mathematics in St. Petersburg. Sofia’s father agreed. When she was 15 years old, she went there with her mother and sister.

Sofia and her sister wanted to go to school, but Russian universities didn’t admit women and their father wouldn’t let them study abroad. Sofia’s sister thought of a plan. They needed to find a student to marry one of them. The sisters didn’t care which one of them got married. They also didn’t care who they found. A student named Vladimir Kovalevsky agreed to their plan. He promised to take his new wife to study in Germany. There was one problem. He liked Sofia, but Sofia didn’t care about him.

Their father refused to allow the marriage. At that time, younger sisters never married before their older sisters. But Sofia wanted to go to school very much. So, she left a note for her father and went to Kovalevsky’s apartment. At that time, a young women never spent time alone with a young man. Her father had to agree to the marriage to save the family’s honor.

The Kovalevskys went to Germany, and Sofia became a mathematics student. They lived apart and rarely saw each other. Sofia was very lonely and studied all of the time. In 1871, she moved to Berlin to work with a famous mathematician.

Women were not allowed to attend the University of Berlin. The mathematician was very surprised when she asked him to teach her. He gave her some problems that even his advanced students could not solve. When Sofia solved the problems, he accepted her as his student immediately. Three years later, Sofia Kovalevsky received her degree in mathematics.

During these years, Sofia Kovalevsky worked completely alone. She had no social life. Vladimir, her husband, also lived in Berlin, but they lived apart. After five years of friendship, however, they finally fell in love. In 1878, they had a daughter. Kovalevsky stopped studying. She wanted to be a good wife and mother. At last she had love and happiness.

Vladimir taught at the University of Moscow. After a while, he left is teaching job. He began to have money and job problems. Sadly, he lost all of their money and then committed suicide. Sofia was devastated.

A great Swedish mathematician helped Kovalevsky get a job as a mathematics professor in Sweden. She became famous because she was the only woman to be a professor in Europe, outside of Italy. In 1888, Kovalevsky competed for the greatest mathematics prize of her time, the Prix Bordin. She worked on a problem about the rings around the planet Saturn. When the Paris Academy of Sciences announced the winner, everyone was amazed that it was a woman. They gave Kovalevsky twice the usual prize money, because she had solved a problem that was very important to science.

In 1890, Sofia Kovalevsky became the first woman elected to the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Science. Unfortunately, her life and brilliant career ended early. In December 1890, she caught a cold. She got very sick, and she died on February 10, 1891, at the age of 41.

2 вариант. 1.Read the texsts and translate them. The environment.

Some problems of the environment are easy to see. This valley in Tasmania, Australia, used to be a beautiful rainforest. But now there is a copper mine. There are no trees, and the land is polluted with chemicals. Very few plans can grow.

Acid rain.

Acid rain comes from industrial countries. But the wind carries it and a lot of it falls on their neighbours. For example, Canada gets acid rain from the USA. The Scandinavia countries get it from Britain.

The greenhouse effect.

Industrial countries also cause the «greenhouse effect». Industry, power stations and cars produce carbon dioxide – CO2. This gas works like the glass walls of a greenhouse. It lets in the sun; but it doesn’t let out the heat. So the Earth gets hotter and hotter.

Pesticides.

Insects eat our vegetables. So farmers put pesticides on the vegetables. But that is not the end of the story. The pesticide chemicals get into the «food chain». Insects eat the pesticide. Birds eat the insects. Big birds eat little birds. At the top of the food chain you find birds like the Peregrine Falcon. Fifty years ago they were common. But more and more of the pesticide DDT got into their blood. Their eggs became, and broke. Now the Peregrine Falcon is quite rare.

Match these words with their meanings.

1 pollution a) a factory which produces electricity2 food b) animal A east animal B, which eats animal C, etc.3 power station c) a chemical for killing insect and other animals4 acid rain d) rising temperatures around the world5 greenhouse effect e) rain containing chemical which pollute the environment6 pesticide f) making earth, air or water dirty and dangerous

+ water = sulphuric acid, H2SO4, nitric acid NHO3 and other acids.

+ oxygen in the air = sulphur dioxide SO2 and oxides of nitrogen NOx.

ACID RAIN.

Industry, power station and cars bum oil and coal.

Acid rain kills trees and fish.

Oil and coal contain sulphur and nitrogen.

3 things I couldn’t live without.

Sarah Tyson (New Zealand), age 16, high school student, likes: shopping & friends.

« I’m not really into computers, gadgets and things like that, but I have to admit I really can’t imagine life to store the whole of your music collection on one tiny device. I like to listen to it when I’m walking to and from school. Also, I’d find it almost impossible to be without my mobile phone. I just couldn’t organize my social life without it, and my parents only allow me to stay out late on Saturday if I keep calling them. They want to know where I am. I’ve just bought a digital camera with my birthday money. It’s fantastic. I’ve taken so many photos of my friends. In fact, I’m even considering a career as a photographer.»

Andy Cooper (UK), age 19, Physics student, likes: music & video games.

« I’m a complete techno freak, so it’s hard to pick just three things I couldn’t live without! Firstly, though, I guess on one these days can survive without their mobile. Mine has got quite a good voice recorder on it so I often use it to record my university lectures so that I can listen to them again at home. It’s really handy. The second thing I really love is the portable DVD player that I won in a competition last year. I’m studying at a university far away from my home town so it’s really nice to be able to put on my headphones and watch movies on the long bus journey back. I’m a bit ashamed to admit it but I’m totally hooked on my PlayStation 2R! I know I’m 19 but I am still very keen on it. I can play for hours!”

Tina Appleby (USA), age 33, accountant, likes: cinema & photography

“I’m a businesswomen so I suppose it goes without saying that I really couldn’t PDA. I’m not a naturally organised person so my PDA in particular really helps me out live without my laptop and I use it as a diary, I change documents on it when I’m on the move and yes, I even play games on it on the underground on my way to work! It keeps my whole life together to the extent that I would feel quite lost without it! And my laptop allows me to store all the information my clients need. I don’t have to carry lost of heavy files when I visit them.

Apart from work, I’ve always had a passion for photography, so my absolute favorite gadget at the moment is my new digital camcorder. I’m having so much fun making home movies. I edit them using software on my laptop. It’s a great pastime”

in Washington D.C., USA.

March 13th

Dear All,

I went with Bob and Claudia to a soccer match today, between Arsenal and Liverpool. It was a quarter-final for the F.A. Cup. So the stadium was full, and the crowd were really excited. There’s no music or cheerleaders like in the States. But the crowd sing all together. The Liverpool song is slow and really nice: ‘Walk on, walk on / With hope in your heart / You’ll never walk alone. ‘The Arsenal people sang, ‘Come on’ you reds’ (Arsenal wear red).

Arsenal won 1 – 0. Ian Wright scored the goal; he headed it in form a corner – wow! The referee made a lot of mistakes. And the crowd shouted things like: ‘Where are your glasses?’

It’s funny here in Britain – they sometimes call it ‘soccer’, but usually ‘football’. Bob always says ‘football’.

Love to you all,

Oliver.

It all began in Britain . . .Football started to become popular almost 200 years ago in Britain. They played with different rules in different parts of the country. So, for example, it was difficult for Bristol to play Newcastle. But in 1863 the Football Association started, and they wrote the rule book. Nine years later they started the F.A Cup. The word ‘soccer’ comes from the word ‘Association’.

The game soon became popular in the rest of the world. Today almost every country plays football. F.I.F.A. (the international football organization) started in 1903, and the first World Cup completion was in 1930.

Recent winners of the World Cup:

The All Blacks

Rugby is an important sport in all parts of the UK. And in Ireland, South Africa, Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand is a small country but they are crazy about ragby. Their team is often the best in the world. It’s called the All Blacks. because they wear black. At the start of a match, they do a ‘war-cry’ or ‘haka’ (a traditional Maori song and dance to frighten the other team).

All Blacks players are usually serious and very big – in fact, rather frightening. But one of today’s best players is different. Arran Pene is a Maori from Otago University, and he is really friendly. He smiles and is happy to give interviews. ‘You have to be strong, obviou

sly,’ says Arran. ‘But strength is not everything in regby. Intelligence is even more important. It’s a thinking game; intelligence beats strength every time. In the All Blacks we have a combination of strength and intelligence-so we win!’

2. Read the rugby guide.

In this section, we discuss rugby rules. Scores are made at the opponent’s in-goal area through tries. Conversions are kicks attempted after a successful try.

Rucks and mauls occur wheny the ball is in play. Play is stopped by a penalty or an offside. If this happens, it results in a set piece. Scrums and lineouts are set pieces. Lineouts happen when the ball goes over the sideline. A scrum involves the forwards of both teams biding together in a test of strength and determination. Penalties sometimes allow the opportunity for a kick at goal.

Teams want to be in possession of the ball. This allows them to move the ball and score. There is a set period of time for play. A try is worth 5 points, a conversation 2, and a penalty 3. The team with the most points wins.

Then, choose the correct answer

Why Are Sumo Wrestlers So Fat?

It is very difficult to stop a train, a ship, or any large object that is moving. The same is true for a sumo wrestler. A big wrestler is hand to move. It is easier for him to move you – like a train that hits a bicycle.

Sumo is a kind of wrestling that comes from Japan. It is Japan’s national sport. The origin of sumo wrestling is religious. It came from Japan’s Shinto religion. You can see the effect of the religion in every part of the sport. For example, the ring, of dohyo, looks like a Shinto temple. The dohyo is fifteen feet across and two feet high. All the decorations are Shinto symbols, too.

Each sumo match starts with a traditional ceremony. The ceremony is as important as the wrestling, and the people like to watch it. Each movement in the ceremony has a special meaning. To begin the ceremony, the wrestles face each other and raise their arms. In the past, this was to show that they didn’t have any knives. Than they clap their hands and stamp their feet. In the past, his was to chase away demons, or bad spirits. Each wrestler has a unique style for his movements. One wrestler may finish the ceremony in one minute, another may take three minutes. The last part of the ceremony is to throw salt in the ring. This means that the ring is clean and read to use.

After the ceremony, the wrestling match starts. The basic rules of sumo are simple and few, which, means that matches can be very exciting. During the match the wrestle can’t pull hair, hit with a closed fist, or choke the other wrestle (but he may push at his throat.) Ha can do anything else. The first wrestle who touches the ground with anything except his feet or steps out of the ring is the loser. Five judges watch the match. A match only lasts a few seconds and rarely lasts one minute.

To become a sumo wrestler you must first join a stable. To enter a stable, you must be fifteen to twenty-two years old. You must be at least five feet seven inches tall and weigh at least 165 pounds. Parents must agree to let their son join a sable, and he must pass a physical exam. When he joins a stable, a wrestler trains and lives there. He is part of that stable for the rest of his life.

In a stable, rank is extremely important. New members start training at 4:30 or 5:00 a.m. It the beginning, new wrestler do the housework nobody likes. They prepare lunch, clean, wash clothes, and do many other chores. Wrestler of low rank always serve wrestler of high rank.

Weigh is important to sumo wrestler. When they join a stable, wrestler may weigh less than 200 pounds, but they must gain weight to advance. The average weight of a top-rank wrestler is 335 pounds. Wrestler are big, but they are not all fat.

They have strong muscles in their arms and legs. They are also very flexible. Some sumo wrestler have less body fat than the average businessman. Weight is important, but they must also have speed, strength, balance, and technique. Sumo wrestler can have health problems because of their weight, too. They often have heart trouble, high blood pressure, diabetes, and injuries from wrestling. Most wrestler try to lose weight after they retire.

It is not ease for some wrestler to get big. They don’t eat candy or other junk to gain weight. They eat large portions of high- calorie food with lost of rice. Some wrestlers eat 20 000 calories a day. That’s ten times the calories an average person eats. They also exercise a lot to build muscle.

In Japan, sumo wrestlers are national heroes. They are as poplar as movie stars. The Japanese believe that sumo wrestlers bring good luck. If a sumo wrestler of high rank picks up a baby, the baby will grow big and strong. They are also popular with women. Sumo wrestlers often marry models, actresses, or television stars.

Injuries.

We all know that exercising is good for your health. However, care must be taken that it is done properly or else injury can result. These injuries may be minor, such as a bruise or a blister. Other common injuries are pulled muscles and sprains. These things usually repair themselves in a few days.

Shin splints are painful. They aren`t an injury themselves, but a symptom of an injury. Shin splints are caused by inflammation of tendons or stress fractures in the lower leg. Tennis elbow is also caused by overuse. The overuse causes tears in the tendons or muscles around the elbow. Both tennis elbow and shin splints can usually be treated with ice and rest. Tendonitis is another overuse injury that may be treated similarly.

More serious injuries require medical attention from a doctor. Many people thinks of carpal tunnel syndrome as something office workers get from typing on a computer all day. It can result from playing some sports as well. A splint may be needed, and in some cases, injections or surgery. A dislocation needs to be reset into place by a doctor and immobilized. This allows them to give immediate treatment to clients who experience heart attacks or trauma while working out. In some cases, knowledge of CPR and first aid can be the difference between life and death. All gyms should be equipped with a portable defibrillator and a first and kit. The first and kit needs to contain some basic items such as bandages, gauze and antibiotic ointment. More comprehensive kits may contain latex gloves, analgesics, cold packs and syringes.__________________________________________________________________

Trainers also need to be familiar with the sings of shock and how to treat it until emergency responders arrive. Shock occurs when the body does not get enough blood flow. Shock can result from blood loss, head injuries, dehydration, severe trauma, and heart failure. Even after a primary injury is treated, shock can still kill someone.__________________________________________________________________
