The President’s BitToday’s match for our Ladies team is their biggest test yet, the team will have to play & work harder than ever beforeto get a good result. We all hope they will win & the team mascot, the rabbit, will have to be on duty & all of the girls that have been part of the team in the past will hopefully come along & give the team their support. I can remember when the Ladies team started playing here. At that time there was not that much interest in ladies football, but as the seasons have gone by the team have got better, winning the league & cups & have got more & more support. After the great win against Cambridge United when over 150 supporters enjoyed the game, our ladies set a fine example for Norfolk Ladies football & as they say in boxing, came top of the ratings. Our Sharon, the club’s Delia Smith, provides the post-match refreshments for the teams & likes to join in with them, a reward for her hard work & it’s good that they all enjoy their Sunday afternoon & all are a credit to our club.Over the weekend of the 24th & 25th October I enjoyed watching our 1st Team against Aylsham, who were unlucky to lose 3-4. Our regular supporters came & I sold out of programmes. The next day more supporters than the day before enjoyed the Ladies match as our team won 3-1 to go top of the league. Many had an enjoyable evening in the clubhouse at my mate Ryan Brown’s 18th birthday party. When Ryan is at the football club he’s always busy, & when Ryan takes your order at the chinese take away where he helps out he tells me that I can have two meals for the price of one, that’s 4 spare ribs instead of 2, so you can tell Brownie Senior that no trout or salmon is needed from the River Tiffey, just get our boat sailing again. As promised in previous programmes, a piece on a previous player:

Mick Money was born & bred in Wymondham and still resides here today.Mick began his football at the age of 11 playing for Ronnie Skinners under 18s side Wymondham Sunday Youth, however he was soon spotted by Alf Fincham, manager of a very successful Attleborough youth side & played there with the likes of Justin & John Fashanu winning most league and youth cups, he also played for Wymondham Old Boys with the infamous Pheonix brothers in the Anglian Combination at the age of 14 before being signed by Thetford Town.Mick began playing for Thetford Town at the age of 16 in the then Eastern Counties League and soon became leading goal scorer which attracted Kings Lynn to the 18 year old. After a successful pre-season Mick was no signed on contract so decided to help Graham Morgan get Wymondham promoted from teh first division of the Anglian Combination with 46 goals in one season, forming a formidable partnership with Paul Leserve, alas this was to be Mick’s only season at Wymondham as he was snapped up by Bill Punton at Great Yarmouth.Mick went on to have a very successful time in the Eastern Counties League playing for Lowestoft Town under Paul Chick & Donny Pye where he played 3 seasons & scored 137 goals.Kings Lynn finally signed Mick on contract in 1985 & he had three seasons there under Freddie Eastall & Peter Mendham before leaving to play for the highly successful Sudbury side where he went on to win the Ridgeon’s League three times, the Suffolk Senior Cup & ECL Cup before playing at Wembley in the 1989 FA Vase final, drawing 1-1 at Wembley but losing the replay at Peterborough United 2-0.Mick then decided to turn his hand to management & with John Fincham took Attleborough Town from Division 3 of the Anglian Combination to Premiership Champions in just 5 seasons, winning the Norfolk Junior Cup at Carrow Road & the Junior & Senior knock-out cups on the way. Attleborough are still the only team on record to be unbeaten for a season in all competitions.Mick started his own business Moneyproperties Estate Agents in 2002

Page 4: Wymondham Town F.C. - WTFC Ladies v Bedford Ladies 8th ......2015/11/08  · 5 or 6 at Ketts Park. The Council or at least some members of it want no senior side in Wymondham and especially

& was chairman of Wymondham Town for 2 seasons where he turned the club around, however work commitments made this difficult to continue. Whilst there he started today’s highly successful Wymondham Ladies team with Kevin Swann & Carl Harmer.Mick went on to manage his son Curtis. (Bertie) Silfield Unites side for 5 seasons where they won the league & cups most seasons, producing players such as Sam Borrer - now at Dereham Town, Jamie Spellar - now at Norwich United & Jackson Ramm who went on to play for Blackburn Rovers.Mick has nothing to do with football these days & prefers to watch his sons Christian & Curtis play.He has sponsored many sports teams over the years but has now decided to put all his fundraising efforts towards helping Les King & the local charity Star Throwers, a Wymondham based charity supporting cancer sufferers.

Enjoy the game.Best wishes

Les King

Les King cuts the tape to open opening Moneyproperties Estate Agents shop in 2002. Mick always wanted to be top of the league, now over the years his estate agents are also climbing the league to become one of the best in Norfolk.

A few words from the Chairman:Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the famous old Kings Head Meadow for this fourth FA Cup Qualifying round match. We welcome all players, coaches committee and supporters from Bedford Ladies and hope they will enjoy their afternoon here in Norfolk. Wymondham Town is one of the oldest clubs in the Country first playing in 1883 with their home always being here at the Kings Head Meadow. If you look in our Meadow View Gallery you will see many pictures going back to the senior winning cup teams of the 1890s. A Famous Picture also of our England Goalkeeper the Reverend George Berkley Raikes. Reverend Raikes kept goal for Wymondham as well as making 4 full first team appearances for England. Since the club was saved in March last year this is without doubt the biggest game in the clubs recent history of what is a historic Norfolk club. A club that has never played junior football! An incredible 132 year old record that we try to preserve as a board. We wish our ladies all the very best this afternoon and thank you all for attending this match whether supporting Wymondham or Bedford. Sometimes we lose sight of just what it is a club should be about. It’s not about petty and deluded empire building its about all pulling in the common cause of Wymondham Town Football Club. Sometimes it very much looks like 4 completely different sides and clubs (First Team, Reserves, Ladies, Under 19s) just playing under the brand that is Wymondham Town. We set out to build a club where all 4 teams work to the common cause and not individual glorification. I am delighted with the appointment of Michael Smith as our New reserve Team Manager and would thank Andy Speller for stepping in to help and also for carrying on with Michael. To have 2 Wymondham people back with the reserves is a major step in the right direction for this club. The football side is a constant head ache for the club as we seem to take 2 steps forward and 5 steps back on a regular basis but we still

have a vision to make this one of the best and most profitable clubs in the county. Yes to do it probably lies away from the Kings Head Meadow but we have to plan for advancement or the club will contract and disappear. As yet we still have not signed the lease and will not be signing it under the present proposal. To charge us under a full business lease when it’s a public open space that we can neither protect or have any jurisdiction over is a nonsense. Also we have to fully maintain this public space in every way shape and form. We quite simply get no help from the council or anyone. The Wymondham Youth Football Club is a fantastic organisation but they have 5 or 6 pitches at Ketts Park fully maintained by the Council with a lot more things being done for them in the pipeline by the Council. They pay just £845 per year for a complete exclusive on Ketts Park. We are seeking complete clarification on why there is such an alarming disparity between what they pay for having everything done for them and what we pay for having to do everything for ourselves our rent has been set at £4,500 per year. Also there is a massive difference between 1 pitch here and 5 or 6 at Ketts Park. The Council or at least some members of it want no senior side in Wymondham and especially on the Kings Head Meadow to pay the new rent we have to generate and additional £9000 in bar revenue to pay it? By setting the rent at £4,500 they simply strangle the life out of the club then in 5 years time they can double it and that is then the end of the football club. Sad but true. We will how ever to keep this club alive and I am sure with everyone pulling in the same direction we may just succeed against all the odds.

Kind RegardsAndy Gardiner

Message from the Director of Football:

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the Kings Head Meadow.Well today is a very exciting time for the club as our ladies team makes club history by playing in the 4th round qualifying against Bedford Ladies in the FA Cup.I would like to wish a warm welcome to Bedford and all their supporters and hope they enjoy their day at the club. This is the first time any team in the club’s 132 year history that has gone this far in the FA Cup, if the girls can manage to win today it will see them into the first round proper of the Women’s FA Cup.The ladies did not have a game last week so it's been an ideal chance for manager Alex Guy to get the girls ready and be fully prepared. And focused for today's game, the girls are still unbeaten in the league so go into this game in great form and full of confidence.I would like to wish the girls and Alex the very best of luck and I hope they win and continued to make the club proud. The 1st team were away to Foulsham yesterday, Foulsham sit four places below Wymondham in the league so this was an ideal opportunity for the lads to grab all three points and push themselves up into the top half of the league. The lads were unlucky last week to get a draw against Bungay and if it was not for a dubious refereeing decision would have come away easy winners.Matt is continuing to strengthen the squad and now has a group of lads that are more than capable of being top six in the league if available every week!!The reserves were away to Stalham hoping to put their disappointing defeat last week behind them.It was new manager Michael Smith's first game in charge and was a disappointing result as the lads played well for large periods of the

10.

game but gave away 3 sloppy goals in 10 minutes that sealed their fate.I am pleased to say Michael has strengthened the management team by asking Andy Speller to be his no2 which Andy has excepted, we now have a management team with the knowledge of local lads, the standard of football required and coaching and discipline we need to turn the season round. I feel confident it won't be long before they get their first points of the season and start to gain the confidence they need to play at the level they are all capable of.The under 19's had another disappointing defeat last week at home to Long Stratton. They started well and scored first and went in at half time 1-1. With only having 11 players including manager Neal Spinks playing and another old Veteran the lads soon tired towards the end of the game and conceded 5 more to lose 1-6.All the best to both teams today I hope it's a cracking game of football which we run out winners! Let's get right behind the girls from the kick-off and help them over the finishing line hopefully to make club history once again!!!What a thought it would be for our girls to be playing in the 1st round proper against the big guns and possible trips to Premier League clubs!! Or even them coming to the meadow!!I hope you all have an enjoyable day and enjoy the facilities provided.I thank you for your continued support and hope to see you all again soon.

The view from the Dugout:

As we look towards today’s game, the team have already made history by progressing from the 3rd Round Qualifying – the furthest the team have ever gone in the FA Cup. Last season, this would have put us in the First Round Proper but the FA have introduced an extra round before that this year so we have to win another game before making the First round on Sunday 6th December. Bedford, like Cambridge United play in the FA Women’s Premier League and once again will be a very tough game and I expect it to be as challenging, if not more difficult than the previous round, especially due to the importance of the fixture and what’s at stake. We are in very good shape at the minute and are currently unbeaten this season, with only five goals conceded in all competitions, which is very impressive since we have had three FA cup games and have already played Thorpe, who are one of the teams that will be looking for silverware this season, whom we beat 3-1 last time out. That game shows how far we have come since the end of last season as we only took one point from a possible six towards the back end of last season and have already beaten them this season and that’s only the second time Wymondham Ladies have beaten Thorpe in the team’s history. The results we have experienced and the performances we have been putting in this season is no surprise to me as I see how hard the squad has worked since I took over. We had an excellent pre-season, where the players have adapted to a new philosophy and training has been very productive in implementing what I’m looking for. The improvement the squad has made since the end of last season is very pleasing and the results speak for themselves. The squad is in a better place now, with the signings adding to both the quality and depth of the squad. I would also like to welcome Brooke Cheal to the club, who has signed for us having previously played for Norwich, but is unable to make her debut today as she is cup tied as she’s already played for Norwich vs Marlow in the FA Cup earlier this season.

As the only Norfolk team left in the competition, the spotlight will be on us and I’m sure you will have seen the preview in the EDP or heard the interview on Radio Norfolk (Nick Bowlers Local Report – Fridays at 1830); however, we will still be the underdogs when the whistle blows and have shown that we have the team spirit, work effort and quality when playing teams both below and above us in the standings. Having already beaten Cambridge United, the squad has experienced playing opposition from a higher level and this will put us in a good position for this game. The First Round awaits the winners of today’s game and I promise we will do everything possible to keep our 100% start to the season and make sure we’re in the draw for the next round of fixtures.

Match reports:WTFC 1st Team 2-2 Bungay Town

On Saturday Wymondham Town entertained Bungay Town who were sitting in 5th position before this game. The Town squad still looked strong even though missing 3 big players but did welcome back John and Charlie Blake

Town started as they always have this season, on the front foot having more of the possession and creating the better chances. Sammy Slater was making his first start for Town and had a number of chances, the Bungay keeper pulling off a couple of great saves to deny him. Town got their noses in front when Jody Peacher showed his strength and skill, held of the Bungay centre half and smashed the ball into the top of the net for his 2nd goal in two games. Town carried on creating chances while defending well and went in at half time in the lead.

The second half started and Town were pinned in their own half for the first 15 minutes. The back four however defended superbly. Bungay then got themselves back in the game with a fortunate goal from a scuffed corner. Straight from kick off town were back infront when Damian Atherton showed his skill and fired home to make it 2:1 to Town. Town carried the momentum for much of the second half without having as ever that killer instinct in front of goal. It was truly one way traffic where Town should have been in front by 3 or 4 goals but for bad luck and inconsistent finishing. The ref somehow found 6 minutes of injury time to add on in a game with no injuries or incidents. Bungay managed to score with the last kick of the game even though the linesman’s flag was up as 4 Bungay players were offside. The ref over ruled the linesman and gave the goal much to the amazement of both teams and the 100 or so supporters at the Kings Head Meadow. Final score 2:2.  Man of the match was Barrie Franklin for some unbelievable saves. Town also named October’s player of the month - Daniel Harford.

Thorpe Village 5-1 WTFC Reserves

It was a bright but cool afternoon at Thorpe Rec, where this bottom of the table clash took place. Thorpe started very brightly and found themselves 2-0 up within 10 minutes from a scrambled corner and a wonder strike! Wymondham then started to get into the game and finished the half the stronger team. HT 2-0. Wymondham started the second half brightly but got caught on the counter attack 10mins into it 3-0. Town managed to get on the score sheet soon after with a back heel effort from Thompson. Although Wymondham continued to push for another goal, they got caught another 2 times on counter attacks. Final score Thorpe Village 5-1 Wymondham.

WTFC Ladies 3-1 Thorpe LadiesWymondham Ladies hosted Thorpe United, a match between two teams that will be looking for silverware this season.Wymondham were getting on the ball and moving it with purpose, with Laura Wiseman and Sally Hammerton linking well up front & good support from the midfield going forwards. Within ten minutes, the Thorpe goalkeeper was forced into a good save following a shot from Sally after a swift Wymondham attack, tipping the ball onto the post and away from danger. With 20 minutes played, manager Alex Guy switched wingers Amber Cantwell and Holloway, with Amber holding the ball up well and playing in the advancing Mary Cann to cross the ball first time & pick out Sally who tapped the ball into the net putting Wymondham into the lead. With two minutes of the half left, Wymondham took a short throw and worked the ball for Laura Hammerton to cross for Sally to finish under pressure & double Wymondham’s lead.Thorpe came out for the second half much sharper and dominated the early stages of the second half; however, they were unable to make any clear cut chances due to Wymondham’s closing down and work-rate. Wymondham thought they had a penalty after Amber skipped past Thorpe’s defender in the box and was upended; however, the referee awarded a goal kick.Wymondham extended their lead after good pressure, when one advancing full back, Gemma Sanders, crossed for the other full back, Leah Newcombe, who calmly took the ball down and passed the ball into the bottom right hand corner to grab her first goal of the season. The lead was cut short soon after as Wymondham played a short pass back to Gemma Hamilton-Rout in goal, who brought down Thorpe’s attacking player. The resulting free-kick was struck firmly into the far corner giving Thorpe the encouragement they needed and pressed Wymondham with more intensity. With not long to go, Wymondham re-grouped and started to play more effectively again & recorded the win to take them top of the table.MOM: Leah Newcombe
