The ABCs of Crayons to College and Career letter of the week is C. The item we will be focusing on for this week is College and Training.

Monday-College does not necessarily mean a 4-year degree. Between 2008 and 2018, 63% of job openings will require some postsecondary education. That means you will need some type of education after high school. This could be a commitment of 1, 2, 4 or more years of specialized training.

Tuesday- Did you know, if you want to be an elementary school teacher, training takes 5-6 years after high school to earn a bachelor’s degree and teaching license. The average teacher in Utah makes $44,750 per year.

Remember, this week we are focusing on College and Training.

For those of you who want to be professional athletes such as football, basketball, soccer, dance or other sports, you will need to spend most of your time preparing for the competition. Athletes practice the techniques of their sport and exercise to maintain their fitness to play. Most are discovered while playing on a college team while earning other degrees. The average athlete in Utah earns only $40,350.

Thursday-If animals are what you love, you might consider a profession as a veterinarian. Vets must attend at least two years of pre-veterinary courses primarily science classes before enrolling in veterinary school, which then takes another four years to complete. If you want to specialize, you will need more training on top of that. The average vet in Utah earns $83,220.

Friday-If fighting crime is the job for you, you might consider being a sheriff or police officer. Besides your high school diploma, you will need to be at least 20 years old, go to police academy training which lasts 3-6 months, and pass a written exam. Many officers also receive bachelor’s degrees in other areas. The average Utah sheriff or cop earns $44,280.

The ABCs of Crayons to College and Career letter of the week is C. The characteristic we will be watching for this week is Communication.

Monday- Can you speak effectively and be a good listener? The way you share your thoughts and express your needs, while listening to others’ needs and wishes can either build or burn bridges with friends. Develop skills in speaking, listening, non-verbal, written and visual communication to ensure a successful future.

Tuesday- Before you speak, think – is it necessary? Is it true? Is it kind? Will it hurt anyone? Will it improve on the silence? If the answer to any of those is no, maybe you should not say it.

Wednesday- The winner of the drawing for a college savings certificate for the theme of College/Training is __________.

Remember, this week we are focusing on Communication.

Peter Drucker said “The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.” Listen for tone of voice, look for eye contact, rolling of eyes, clenched fists, red face or folded arms.

Monday- Determination is simply not giving up no matter how hard things get, or how badly you want to. Keep on keeping on. The difference between possible and impossible lies in a person’s determination.Tuesday- A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Resolution is another word for determination. Being honest means you admit to your actions, even if you’ll get in trouble. It also means you don’t say things about people that aren’t true. Tuesday-“The secret of happiness is this: Let your interests be as wide as possible, and let your reactions to the things and persons that interest you be as far as possible friendly rather than hostile” (Bertrand Russell).

Jan 13The ABCs of Crayons to College and Career letter of the week is M. The characteristic we will be watching for this week is Money Smarts. Monday- It’s never too early to learn money smarts and become financially responsible. Being financially responsible means spending, saving and giving your money wisely.

Tuesday-Sometimes you don’t have enough money to buy the things you want like a bicycle, an ipod. You have to save up first. How much money will you need to earn to buy the things that you want?

Wednesday- The winner of the drawing for a college savings certificate showing exemplary Motivation is __________.Remember, this week we are focusing on Money Smarts.

Did you know your money can work for you? Putting your money from your piggy bank into a savings account earns what is called interest. Interest is what the bank pays you to for keeping your money in their bank. If you start your college savings account now, your money will grow, making it easier to pay for college. Thursday-You might think that by giving your money to others will make you less happy because you have less money. However, there is extensive research which shows how happy you are and how much money you have are not as closely related as we think, and that giving your money to charity actually increases your happiness.
