Like many standup comedians, Ryan Hamilton makes his home in New York City. But having grown up very far away – both literally and symbolically – in a small town in Idaho, gives his persona a bit of a fish-out-of-water element. And with a large toothy grin, he likes to joke that his face makes him look like an old-fashioned advertising campaign. “I look like a comedy club logo,” he’s said in his act. “I could sell ice cream in the ‘50s.”
Ryan is notable for being a “clean” comedian – but his audiences are usually laughing too hard to even notice that he’s working “clean.” This aspect happened naturally – he doesn’t find himself needing a censor when he’s offstage, so it would be unnatural for him to do so when he is onstage. “It’s just kind of an extension of myself,” he said. “You have to be authentic to who you are.”
The strategy is working for Ryan, who will perform at JFCS’ 29th Annual “Laugh on their Behalf ” Benefit on Dec. 2. He was named one of Rolling Stone’s “Five Comics to Watch” with standout appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan,
The Late Late Show, Last Comic Standing, Comedy Central, and Showtime. He’s also racked up a remarkable number of national competition wins and festival appearances, including winning The Great American Comedy Festival and Sierra Mist’s America’s Next Great Comic Search.
Growing up, Ryan liked to watch An Evening at the Improv on A&E, which always featured a showcase of standup comedians. But more than standup, the area that interested him when he was young was humor writers. He loved reading comedian Dave Barry’s columns and at one point convinced the local newspaper in his town to give him a weekly humor column.
He had done some standup appearances after graduating high school, but didn’t treat it as a potential career at the time. He graduated college with a journalism degree and began to pursue that career track. However, when he got laid off from a job at 24, he decided to use the opportunity to focus on standup.
“I thought I would put a year into (focusing on standup full-time) and see
what happens.” Ryan said. “I just started doing more and more comedy. I had some great opportunities during that year and just kept going ever since.”
Recently, what he’s most excited about is his first standup special, Happy Face, which premiered on Netflix at the end of August. “I’ve been working towards that for a long time,” he said. “I would like to do another special in a year or two.”
Ryan’s material covers a broad spectrum of topics, and he works to make his act as universal as possible. He has performed in Minneapolis many times over the years and performed in Israel last year.
“I really enjoy doing comedy anybody can enjoy,” he said. “I usually talk about what’s going on in my life. I like to have a unique perspective.”
Don’t miss Ryan when he performs at the 29th Annual Benefit! Event Co-Chairs Lauren Weiser and Fran Bayer, along with their Steering Committee, are excited to present him at the Dec. 2 event. “I’m really looking forward to the event – I think it will be great,” Ryan said. “I know JFCS has had a lot of great comedians and I’m honored to be part of that tradition.”

JFCS is blessed to have hundreds of prize donors who participate in our Annual Benefit’s Raffle, Online Auction and $100 Pull. Four long-time business supporters of our Annual Benefit are Continental Diamond, Max’s jewelry store, Coordinated Business Systems, and Travel One. JFCS recently reached out to these businesses to ask why they support our Annual Benefit each year:
Continental DiamondsRevital Furman, Continental Diamond’s Director of Sales
and Strategy, said supporting the JFCS Annual Benefit each year is an easy decision because it brings together hundreds of community members of all ages to celebrate what a caring and supportive Jewish community we have here in Minneapolis. “By supporting this event, we have the chance to align our family values with our corporate values and give something back to a community we care about,” she said.
She added that Continental believes everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue health, happiness and success. “JFCS has a pulse on the needs in our community and provides services that offer a hand up to people in need while treating them with the dignity and respect they deserve,” Furman said. “They believe in people, and we do too.”
Max’sEllen Hertz, owner of Max’s, said her company believes in
the power of individual and business investment to make the world a better place. “When all in our community don’t have the opportunity to reach their full potential, we are all affected,” she said. “The mission of JFCS is in complete alignment with this belief.”
She added that Max’s is proud to support the JFCS Annual Benefit each year. “The Benefit is vitally important in raising money that is needed to make critical, tangible differences in peoples’ lives on a daily basis,” Hertz said.
Coordinated Business SystemsCoordinated Business Systems and its owners Jim and
Donna Oricchio have been supporting the JFCS Annual Benefit since 1994, nearly since the inception. In addition to being the Online Auction Sponsor, Coordinated Business Systems donates Twins tickets for our Online Auction and something special each year for our Raffle.
The Oricchios have attended most of the Annual Benefits over the last 23 years and always look forward to the event. “We like to support JFCS because of all the great work it does,” Jim said. “It helps people from all religions and backgrounds in a committed and unselfish way.”
Travel OneThe Sigel/Neuman Family – Sheila Sigel, Steve Neuman
and Bill Neuman – and their business, Travel One, have also supported the Benefit for many years. The three siblings said that JFCS was the favorite non-profit organization of their mother, Corky Neuman.
Corky worked many years as a volunteer for JFCS, organizing events and parties, driving for seniors, and helping whenever or wherever needed. She was also a proud recipient of the Spirit of JFCS Award, the highest honor given to a JFCS volunteer.
“Our parents have been great role models, teaching us the importance of volunteering our time and financially supporting local Jewish charities,” the family said. “It is a pleasure for Travel One to be a long-standing supporter of the JFCS Annual Benefit. The good work of JFCS is an inspiration and serves as a guideline for our own family values.”

JFCS prides itself on being the place people turn to when they need help. From aging and career services, to counseling and mental health advocacy, JFCS serves people of all ages and backgrounds. At JFCS, we realize it’s difficult for individuals to achieve positive mental health and satisfying, healthy relationships when their basic needs aren’t met.
This is why we provide critical programs and services addressing food security and basic needs that help ensure that individuals and families we serve have the essential resources to live better, more fulfilled lives. Easing suffering is at the core of our mission – but in order to achieve this, healthy food, clothing, a safe home and reliable transportation must come first.
The JFCS Food Security Program addresses needs specifically related to food access for individuals within the Jewish and broader community. It includes community outreach to groups typically at risk such as seniors, low-income families, and people with physical and mental disabilities. Helping people access programs such as SNAP (food stamps) and food shelves – especially our partner, PRISM – is a large piece of the program’s work. JFCS also plays an active advocacy role locally and nationally by participating in coalitions such as MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger (national) and Partners to End Hunger (local).
Other JFCS programs that address food security and basic needs include The ACT Program (family support program in St. Louis Park Schools), Emergency Financial Assistance, Holocaust Survivor Support Services, and Kosher Meals on Wheels. Even our Hag Sameach program, which provides ritual foods for Jewish holidays, ensures families don’t
have to choose between paying a utility bill or having the food necessary to celebrate Passover.
JFCS always provides solutions to ensure our clients most basic needs are met. “For the clients, food security is a foundational piece of economic stability,” said Clare Gravon, Food Security Program Coordinator. “What is more fundamental than knowing you’ll be able to feed your kids next week?”
PRISMJFCS and PRISM formed a
partnership several years ago to extend the capacities of both social service agencies to meet the needs of people experiencing financial hardship and/or food insecurity. PRISM, which features a food shelf, housing program and a thrift shop, offers an immediate response to people in crisis. JFCS provides wrap-around services in areas like career services, children and family services, and counseling and mental health support that can stabilize families, provide long-term solutions and help prevent future crises.
JFCS and PRISM will be partnering even closer in early 2018 when both move into the same building in Golden Valley – a new, shared home for both agencies. “The partnership with JFCS allows us to respond in a more holistic manner to the needs of people in the community,” said Michelle Ness, Executive Director of PRISM. “The array of services JFCS offers complements what we do at PRISM very well.” Suburban poverty is growing at a concerning rate, she said, and one of the best ways to respond to it is to have a comprehensive organization that can provide many services in the same location.
The ACT ProgramThe ACT Program of JFCS serves
families in elementary school and early childhood programs in the St Louis Park School District. The program provides resources to assist with parenting support, school and educational concerns, and access to community resources. ACT recognizes that when families have basic needs satisfied, adequate healthcare and stable housing, their children are more likely to get to school and succeed.
One individual who benefitted greatly from The ACT Program is Tina, a single mother of three who suffered a serious work injury two years ago. Her injury greatly affected her ability to take care of her kids and do basic functions like cooking, cleaning, and more. She said one of the greatest things that happened after her injury was when a guidance counselor at her child’s school referred her family to The ACT Program. JFCS was able to provide a Thanksgiving meal for her family, scholarships for her children to attend summer camps, supplies for birthday parties and emergency financial assistance for rent and utility bills.
“Without JFCS our family would have gotten by, but our quality of life would have been very different,” Tina said. “My kids get to be kids – they get to go to camp. They’ve received holiday meals and Christmas presents. There is nobody that has helped us more than JFCS.”
Tina said the Thanksgiving meal especially provided a wonderful moment for her family. She wasn’t able to cook or go to the grocery store on her own, so being able to be in the kitchen with her kids helping her prepare the meal together is something she wouldn’t have been able to experience. “I had so much gratitude,” she said. “When you can’t access these things on your own, it was

humbling to know people cared that much.”
Advocacy at the CapitolThough JFCS is able to address
immediate food security needs through our own programs and community partnerships, we don’t lose focus on the long-term picture. JFCS staff and Board of Directors, through its Advocacy Committee, advocate on issues of importance affecting our clients and
community. Members of this committee met with elected officials this summer at the state and national level to discuss hunger and food security.
“The work of non-profits and faith-based institutions is not enough – we also need good public policy,” said Jaye Snyder, a member of the Advocacy Committee. “That starts with leaders who are educated and well-informed on what the challenges are. Our advocacy efforts at JFCS seek to inform and educate, as
well as build relationships with those who directly impact policy.”
JFCS Chief Executive Officer Judy Halper said, “I’m fond of quoting the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone, who said, ‘We all do better when we all do better.’ Those of us who are able to donate, volunteer, offer support and assistance can help those in need, and at the end of the day, we all benefit!”
“There is nobody that has helped us more than JFCS.”
– Tina, ACT Program Client

JFCS’ full array of Career Services helps job seekers prepare for success in today’s competitive job market. Our programs empower people to explore and identify their visions of career success. Whether you are a recent graduate, recently unemployed or looking for a new job, JFCS Career Services can help you achieve career satisfaction by helping you make deliberate decisions at a critical point in your work life. JFCS Employment Counselor Anna Ferdelman discusses these topics below:
What services do you provide as an Employment Counselor?
Anna: I coach active job seekers by helping them retool and re-enter the workforce. Whether it’s from a layoff, coming back from retirement, wanting a career transition or working with a recent graduate, I provide the tools necessary for my clients to succeed and feel comfortable with the job search process. Services I provide are employment plan development, résumé and cover letter development, coaching in networking and interviewing, job search tips and strategies, career exploration, and administering career assessments.
What services do you find clients are most grateful for when working with you?
Even though my clients feel more confident with their job search after I help them with technical skills like résumé writing, interviewing skills, their elevator speech and more, it is often the personalized and holistic aspect of simply listening to their story and providing support that makes them most grateful.
Most clients I work with don’t have the opportunity to talk through their emotions surrounding the job search with someone at home. Whether they live by themselves or do not want to put the burden of their emotions on a loved one, they confide in me. I make sure they feel heard and understood, as this is a necessary step before they can truly immerse themselves into the job search.
Being unemployed is not easy and I feel it’s becoming more difficult. Job seekers are having to be more resilient, so having unbiased support is crucial. I pride myself in being that support system for them. I want to be their cheerleader throughout the
entire job search process. It can be a bumpy ride, but I am right there with them.
What do you enjoy about working with recent graduates?
Working with recent graduates is like starting to work on a blank canvas – the beginning is the most important. It is their first experience with the professional world, so they act like sponges soaking everything in. I know I did! They are new to the industry, so there is a lot to learn, mentally and emotionally. Even though today’s learner will have approximately 14 jobs, it’s
still important for recent graduates to get into the industry that is best suited to them, so they can continue to grow in that field versus hopping around trying to figure it out for years to come.
One study said that only 20 percent of professionals work from their strengths. This type of statistic is what inspires me to dive deeper with my clients to help them reveal their passions, natural strengths, aptitudes, personality traits, and more. It has to start with self-discovery. Commitment and energy come from passion. People want to be inspired. Some of them just don’t know it yet, and that is what I am here for.
What do you like most about your job?
Sharing the excitement with my clients when they find out they got the job
they desired and deserved. It’s so rewarding when I see my clients’ hard work finally paid off, and I love to share the enjoyment with them. It truly makes my day when they achieve their goals.
I am also passionate about career exploration, as it is an enjoyable journey to take with my clients. Typically, it starts off slow and apprehensive. However, after a little self-discovery and an increase in confidence, they become more energetic and optimistic. The process is inspiring to watch! When someone contacts JFCS for help related to mental health, we have teams of clinically trained professionals who take a holistic approach to each situation. From Counseling and Mental Health Support Services to Career Services and financial assistance, JFCS has the ability to provide comprehensive, individualized services for people living with mental illness, as well as for the people who care for them.
In addition to helping individuals living with mental illness, JFCS strives to reduce the stigma of mental illness through community-wide educational events. One of the largest events is the Annual Twin Cities Mental Health Education Conference.
JFCS and Jewish Family Service of St. Paul (JFS) co-sponsor the conference each fall – this year’s event is Oct. 22 and features Melody Moezzi, Iranian-American activist, award-winning writer and attorney, and author of Haldol and Hyacinths: A Bipolar Life.
The Annual Mental Health Conference was created in 2001 to raise awareness of the fact that mental health issues are as common in the Jewish community as they are in the broader community. “In the years before the conference, the subject was pretty much taboo,” said Laurie Kramer, who co-founded the event and still organizes it every year. “Jewish families who had problems tried to keep them secret, leaving family members feeling isolated and alone.”
She pointed out that the Conference has been very well attended since the beginning, and this is critical to reducing the stigma of mental illness. “When 500-plus people come together to learn and to give and get support, they understand that whatever they are dealing with, they are not alone,” she said.
In addition to Moezzi’s keynote address, this
Educational conference helps reduce stigma of mental illness in the Jewish communityJFCS’ and JFS’ Annual Twin Cities Mental Health Education Conference helps those living with mental illness realize they are not alone
Community Involvement
Melody Moezziyear’s conference features two breakout sessions of workshops with 22 topics to choose from, covering mental health issues affecting youth to people in the later stages of life. Workshop topics include dementia, addiction, eating disorders, anxiety and depression, mental health advocacy, yoga psychotherapy, and many more.
JFCS, JFS, and Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis are also hosting a separate event, “Learning from Each Other: An Interfaith Conversation on Mental Health,” on Oct. 23 at Mt Olivet (5025 Knox Ave. S., MPLS). Moezzi will also speak at this event, which is open to clergy of all faiths, congregational staff and lay leaders interested in mental health issues.
JFCS’ array of services for those living with mental illness is available year-round. For more information call 952-546-0616 or visit www.jfcsmpls.org.

In Memory OfWe note the following six individuals who passed away between April 1 and July 31, 2017. We thank their families for thoughtfully designating JFCS for their memorials. It is a beautiful tribute to those who passed and a fitting way to ensure their legacy will continue to enhance the lives of many others in the community. May their memories always be for a blessing.Peppy ApplebaumAudrey HillmanDavid A. LeeBeryl Miller

2017Unrestricted giving...
In a little more than two months, this year’s Annual Campaign, Give2017, will come to a close. This is a call to action. Now, more than ever, direct and sustained support from your financial gift provides the stability necessary for JFCS to remain
innovative and poised to meet the evolving and critical needs of thousands each year. In today’s ever-changing philanthropic climate, once predictable sources of funding have become less steadfast and robust. Allocations from long-time funders have decreased as available funds have diminished and priorities have narrowed or shifted. Fees to JFCS incurred from third party contributions further this loss. It must be said that in the absence of this essential funding, essential services remain essential.
Direct financial giving has, by necessity, become a more predictable and vital source of unrestricted revenue for JFCS. Please partner with JFCS to meet the needs of thousands of individuals and families of all backgrounds this year.
TO SUPPORT GIVE2017 AND HELP US REACH OUR GOAL TO RAISE $615,000, CALL 952-546-0616 OR VISIT WWW.JFCSMPLS.ORG, CLICK ON “DONATE” AND SELECT “GIVE2017 CAMPAIGN.”
WITH MORE THAN $255,000 TO GO, WE NEED YOU. ON BEHALF OF THOSE WE SERVE, THANK YOU!
unlimited potential.
The Hag Sameach (Happy Holidays) program provides holiday gifts to families and individuals who are in need.
Now in its 25th season, the Hag Sameach (Happy Holidays) program ensures joyous Chanukah celebrations for families and individuals in need by providing them with holiday gifts and ritual items. Each year, over 700 individuals and families are served thanks to the generosity and dedication of our donors, volunteers, and referrals from professional and community leaders.
As the need continues to grow, your support is vital to the success of Hag Sameach. Whether you give your time or treasure, you will help the Chanukah lights burn brighter for so many in our community. Here’s how you can help:

Donor News
Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis is blessed to have hundreds of supporters who give both time and money, which ensures that we are the place to turn to for help and support in times of need or crisis. For 107-year-old JFCS, legacy giving has been a way to ensure that we will continue to serve both the Jewish and broader communities for the next 100 years.
JFCS is one of several local organizations to which Eric and Sally Bressler have decided to leave a legacy gift. “What I like about JFCS is that it looks outward and helps everyone in the community,” Sally said. “It has a great reputation.”
The Bresslers are longtime supporters of several local Jewish organizations. Eric first got involved at JFCS in 2003, when he helped launch the agency’s Jewish Free Loan Program. He has been on the JFCS Board of Directors the past two years. Sally has been involved with the National Council of Jewish Women for many years, as well as other agencies.
Eric said he and Sally like to “think globally, act locally,” when it comes to giving. Current gifts are always important, he said, but legacy giving is a way to make your impact live on. “If you have money you can leave, it can do your work while you’re not there anymore,” Eric said. “That’s what feels good for me.”
Eric and Sally aren’t from the Twin Cities, but they have lived here for 30 years and have established strong roots here. Their adult children don’t live in town, so Eric and Sally see their legacy gifts as a way for their family to support the local community they have called home for so long – and they feel it’s a great example of philanthropy for their children.
“These are organizations we want to see continue long after we’re gone,” Sally said. “Legacy giving is important for us – it helps us leave our mark on the Twin Cities community.”
Russ and Karen Rubin, who have supported and volunteered with JFCS for many years, have also left a legacy gift for the agency. Karen has been playing a leadership role in JFCS’ Hag Sameach (holiday gift) program – her “true love” at JFCS – since it started 20 years ago. She’s also served on the JFCS Board. Russ created an endowment, the Karen Rubin Hag Sameach Fund, in her honor because he knew it was a large part of the legacy she wanted to provide to JFCS and the families it serves.
In addition to their endowment, the Rubins felt it was important to leave a legacy gift for JFCS. “The work of JFCS and other agencies like it is never done,” Russ said. “The things we care about aren’t going to end when we are no longer here. We see it as our responsibility to make sure those needs are met well into the future.”

JFCS is excited to announce its ‘Next Century’ location, opening in 2018Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis
(JFCS), along with Pope Architects, is excited to announce its “Next Century” location, which will be open in early 2018! JFCS – along with Minnesota-based Pope Architects and the building’s founding sponsor, the Stillman Family Foundation – is renovating an existing office and warehouse building in Golden Valley to create a welcoming home for 120 employees and clients in its 30-plus programs and services. The newly renovated building will provide JFCS with a permanent home for the first time in its 107-year-history.
Joining JFCS in this new space is non-profit partner PRISM, which serves more than 6,000 people each year through its food shelf, housing programs, children’s programs, and thrift shop. This will be the first time since PRISM’s founding in 1970 that it has been housed in a facility planned specifically to meet the unique needs of its services and participants.
The building’s innovative design will encourage collaboration and connection and foster staff and community engagement, while also providing privacy for clients. The Golden Valley site will be a welcoming, community-building home for volunteers, staff and other community members. It will also be equipped with more efficient and innovative technology.
Through an interactive process with JFCS and PRISM, Pope Architects planned and designed a transformation of the existing Richter Building at 5905 Golden Valley Rd. The design offers a collaborative, flexible work space, with informal and formal meeting spaces, a community event room, meditation/prayer rooms, updated technology, adjustable-height desks and more. In addition, the portion of the building to be leased by PRISM includes a grocery-store-like food shelf and a large retail space for PRISM’s Shop for Change Thrift Shop. The two-level space is strategically organized to facilitate collaboration and shared resources.
“Our new building provides a great opportunity for staff, volunteers and donors to better serve the local community with the very best in professional, compassionate and caring service,” said Judy Halper, JFCS Chief Executive Officer. “Throughout life, each person experiences a time when he or she can benefit from help and support – and we are here to serve everyone.”
Since 1910, JFCS has provided programs, services, and support for thousands in the Jewish and broader communities – from older adults and people needing employment to children and families. The agency also provides community engagement programs and counseling and mental health support. There have been a few locations from which JFCS has operated these services over the past century, but JFCS has never owned its own

building. It is now embarking on a path to a permanent home where it hopes to serve the community for another century…or longer!
Stillman Family FoundationThe Stillman family has been a supporter of JFCS for
decades, both financially and as volunteers. Andy Stillman serves on the JFCS Board of Directors. He and his father, Ralph Stillman, who sadly passed away earlier this year, helped provide the vision for JFCS’ new home, and the Stillman Family Foundation is the building’s founding sponsor.
Andy and his wife, Cass Stillman, have supported JFCS for years because it not only serves the Jewish community, but people of all backgrounds without regards to race, color, creed or religious belief.
“I saw this as an opportunity to invest in an organization that reaches most facets of need while building bridges to the community in what is the spirit of Judaism,” Andy said. “A place that is the center of our community for help.” He added that the opportunity for JFCS to join forces with a leading food shelf like PRISM allows it to become the “go-to” place for those in need in our community.
