Boredom busters for school holidays By Zack Phillips

With school soon drawing to a close, you may be wondering what is on to entertain the kids. Luckily over the holidays, the Muswellbrook Library has put together a number of events to occupy your family over this two-week period. On Thursday night 2nd July, there will be a ‘Stuffed Animal Sleepover’ at the Muswellbrook Library. From 5:30pm through to 6:30pm, you can bring your stuffed and cuddly friend to the Muswellbrook Library and have some warm milo and biscuits. You will leave your special friend at the library on the night, and pick him up on Friday at 10:30am to see what he got up to over the night.

If you’re a comic fan, head to the library on 9th July at 3.30pm, as the Muswellbrook Library is hosting a ‘Comic Day’! The day will be full of fun activities, along with other comic fans showing off their collections of comics and superhero collectables. There will also be a costume competition, so if you wear your favourite superhero or villain costume, you will go into the draw to win a prize.

These are just a small selection of the events taking place over the holidays. For more events and information, visit the website on www.uhrl.nsw.gov.au or phone 6543 1913.

Brass blokes made of goldDo you know a local man who, despite facing his own challenges, offers a helping hand to others? Why not show your appreciation by nominating him for the Brass Blokes Award.

The Brass Blokes Award aims to give community recognition to men who overcome their own personal challenges and go on to help others. It’s hoped encouraging these men to share their stories of overcoming adversity will inspire other people dealing with mental health challenges.

The winners will be recognised at a fundraising dinner in Newcastle on Friday 17th July. The dinner will raise money to train new volunteers, telephone crisis support, counselling and suicide prevention services in our region.

To nominate or find out more visit your local Lifeline centre or log on to www.lifelinehunter.org.au Image: Brass Blokes Awards - 2014.

Singleton unleashed Singleton is about to get its first purpose-built, fenced dog park with no time restrictions for play.Council is installing fencing around Merricks Fire Brigade Park next week. It will have a double gated fence to make sure errant puppies can’t escape their confines. There will also be a small time-out area for dogs who get too excited.

The idea is to give dogs a place where they can run free and play together off the lead and in safety.

While anyone is welcome to use the park, owners are expected to make sure their dog behaves and clean up any mess made.

Singleton wrapSingleton Library is tackling the big issues in two upcoming author talks.Exploding the myths of maturity will be the priority for authors Joan McCarthy and Maureen Smith when they discuss their latest book on 16th June at 2pm. The two ladies have looked into the lives of Australian women in their 60s and 70s and the results turn accepted notions of ageing on their head.

Aboriginal author Paul Callaghan will bravely share his journey from success to depression and back to success at the Library on Tuesday 7th July.

Paul had a seemingly perfect life until depression brought that crashing down. He’s managed to find himself and re-build his life to the point where he is a caring father and husband, CEO, employer and advocate.

His book provides models, insights and exercises on achieving improved wellbeing through traditional Aboriginal culture, philosophy and spirituality.

Booking are essential, call 6578 7500 or log on to www.singleton.nsw.gov.au

On a lighter note, Singleton Library will also be offering lots of activities for children throughout the school holidays.

The library will be anything but quiet when the Wii Games and Pizza event happens again, with everyone who goes getting a free pizza afternoon tea.

If your kids prefer something more relaxed they can try kid’s yoga or craft demonstrations. Kids can also use Lego to build mini-film sets, props and characters to make their own short animation as part of the Lego Big Build Animation workshop.

There will also be morning storytime plus a magic and juggling workshop. Find out more about the free and low cost entertainment by logging into www.singleton.nsw.gov.au

Thousands fl ock to Festival of the FleecesLast weekend’s Rosto Olives Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces which was broadcast live across Australia by the 2GB Continuous Call Team throughout last Saturday attracted record crowds to enjoy the biggest event in the festival’s 25-year history. Thousands of people experienced the diverse attractions celebrating the importance of wool and the Upper Hunter’s special rural heritage with the festival highlight being the street parade led out by the Running of the Sheep in Red Socks.

The 306 Dohne Merino Sheep donated by Upper Hunter Shire Councillor Ron Campbell were led out by local pet sheep Angus, ahead of a colourful parade of businesses, school and community groups.

For the fi rst time the festival included the ‘yarn bombing’ of the Merriwa main street with woollen decorations created by volunteers under the guidance of ‘fl eecing the streets’ coordinator Michelle Kludas of Murrurundi.

As well as the many woolly attractions including the Sheep Yard Dog Trials, the crowd enjoyed team penning, whip cracking, gumboot throwing, Ka Boom fi reworks, and close contact with animals from reptiles to Clydesdales. The ‘sheep poo’ spitting competition sent a jelly bean 6.1 metres and the dog high jump competition was won by kelpie, Jack, with a festival record height of 2.25 metres.

Friday night’s entertainment included singer Shelly Minson and a fashion parade compered by Councillor Deirdre Peebles.

On Monday morning the poets’ breakfast with Carol Heuchon included a poets’ competition won by Freda Harvey.

Monies raised from the Festival are donated to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and the Merriwa Volunteer Rescue Association.

Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Wayne Bedggood, Deputy Mayor Maurice Collison and Cr Ron Campbell were safety marshalls for the Running of the Sheep at the 25th Annual Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Leading the parade: Felicity Telfer, Clara Piefke and Angus the sheep.

Aberdeen – the gateway to the Highland Games

A record number of pipe bands has signed up to perform at Aberdeen’s Highland Games at Jefferson Park on July 4. The Highland Games has become a major attraction for the region, with people travelling from all over Australia to celebrate their Scottish heritage. This year’s celebration will be of special interest for those people who descend from the Clan MacLeod. The honoured guest is John MacLeod, Chief of MacLeod of Raasay, and there will be a special ‘meet and greet’ scheduled for 1pm on Saturday 4th July for all clan members at the clan stall site. It’s expected to attract a large number of Macleods to the beautiful Upper Hunter Valley.

“The festival is proving to be a much-needed boost for the local economy with all stall sites completely booked out. A large number of motor homers and campers are expected to come to Aberdeen in the lead up to the games. The festival also has an increased number of sponsors this year.” stated Charles Cooke who plays an integral role on the Aberdeen Highland Games’ organising committee.
