SUMMER 2018:LITERATURE AND HISTORY STUDY AND TRAVEL INSTITUTE:
CREDIT COURSE INFORMATIONNote: The travel is a required component of the institute and must be taken to receive credit or PDPs for this institute. Students must complete two days of seminar-style institute classes before departure. During these sessions, the instructors will review the academic requirements and due dates for institute portfolio and the travel aspects of the seminar. Dates of the institute classes are July 5-6. The travel portion of the institute is from July 7-19. All students must attend all days of the study/travel institute classes to receive credit. Travelers joining the trip but not taking the institute for credit are welcome to attend the seminars.
TRIP INFORMATIONCOST: $3299 (double occupancy) Price subject to change based on number of travelers and any changes in taxes and fees. In order to register for the travel portion, you must register for TWO non-credit SSU study and travel courses:

This summer join the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies and the History and English departments at Salem State University for a unique study and travel institute on the theme of World War II, the Holocaust and National Memory in Germany, Austria and Poland. The institute can be taken for SSU credit or for travel only. The institute begins on the Salem State University campus with a two-day seminar led by Professors Stephenie Young (English) and Christopher Mauriello (History). It will explore the complex relationship between the events of WWII and the Holocaust and how different nations, governments and peoples represent and remember those events and their meanings. The institute continues with 12 days of educational group travel to explore relevant historical sites, museums, monuments and culture in Germany, Austria and Poland including:
Nuremberg: (Faculty-led walking tour of city, Nuremberg Rally Grounds Interpretation Center/Museum, Zeppelin Field Rally Grounds, Palace of Justice/Nuremberg Trials Museum and Court Room 600)
Munich: (Faculty-led walking tour of city, Conspiracy of the White Rose Memorial, Munich Documentation Center for Nazi History)
Vienna: (Faculty-led walking tour of the city and Holocaust Memorial)
Krakow: (Guided city tour, guided Krakow Ghetto tour, Old Synagogue Museum, Schindler’s Factory Museum)
Auschwitz: (Guided tour of Auschwitz I and II concentration camps, educational workshop/seminar at Auschwitz Educational Center)
Warsaw: (Guided city tour, guided tour of Warsaw Ghetto, The Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Nozyk Synagogue)
Gdansk: (Guided city tour, National Museum of WWII, Gdansk War Memorial and Liberation Memorials)
The trip is structured around specific course themes, but there will be free time in most cities to explore museums, exhibits, restaurants and German, Austrian and Polish culture on your own. Travelers taking the course without credit are very welcome and included in all the institute travel experiences, tours, site visits and entrance fees.
