“What in the world is that large bird out in the fi eld?” I can only imagine how many people were asking them-selves that very question and how many children queried their parents as they traveled that morning. Let me back up a second. On Monday, Sep. 20, I had a 10 AM appointment in Cranber-ry (Butler County). I took I-376 East to the PA Turnpike (I-76). Roughly 4-miles before Exit 28 (I-79/US-19), I saw a large solitary bird standing out in a fi eld to the north of the highway, less than 100-yards away. I’m sure a lot of viewers racked their brains with large bird species they were familiar with: great blue heron, turkey vulture, Canada goose; but this particular bird was none of those. I recognized the distinct body shape and plumage, and I smiled because I was making my fi rst sandhill crane observation in Beaver County. It struck me as odd this adult sandhill crane was alone. Typically, I’ve seen them as mated pairs, such as oc-curred on my two previous sightings, one on PA-158 about a mile south of Mercer’s Brandy Springs Park in Mer-cer County and the other along PA-358 a mile south of Keystone Safari in But-ler County. If you’re not familiar with sandhill cranes, they are fascinating, beautiful birds with an interesting local connec-tion. Found primarily in North America and a portion of Siberia, their name has ties to the Sandhill Region of Nebraska, where 80% of the Central Flyway’s large sandhill crane population utilizes a 75-mile stretch of the Platte River each Spring as they congregate into large fl ocks to migrate north. Remarkably, sandhill cranes have one of the longest fossil records of an existing bird spe-cies. Here in the United States, unmiti-gated human interference caused the sandhill crane population to plummet to only a few thousand by 1930 and the population east of the Mississippi River was so decimated, there is no mention of the sandhill crane’s existence in PA birding guides from the late 1800s and most decades of the 1900s. When you see a sandhill crane, you’ll know it, if you know what to look for. They are large birds with spindly legs and a pointy black beak. Probably the easiest identifying feature is the adults, both male and female, have a distinct red crown on the top half of their heads, stretching from the base of their beaks to behind their eyes, along with white cheek patches. (Immature sand-hill cranes lack this red crown.) Their bodies are gray in color, but often take on an ochre hue, because the birds frequently preen their feathers with

mud to help camoufl age themselves in their natural surroundings. Adults stand 4-feet tall, have a 7-foot wingspan, weigh 8 to 14 lbs., fl y with a quick up-stroke and a slower, more relaxed, downstroke rhythm, and are known for riding the thermal air currents aloft to exceptional heights and for ex-tended distances. Sandhill cranes are omnivores, consuming plants, grains, worms, and even mice. Prior to 1993, there were periodic sightings of migrating sandhill cranes visiting PA. However, here in Lawrence County in 1993, a pair of sandhill cranes was observed with one chick, the fi rst record of the species reproducing in PA. It wasn’t until 2009 when the fi rst sandhill crane nest was found and pho-tographed in PA, based on the species’ secretive nesting habits in marshy ar-eas. Today, sandhill cranes have been observed in 33 of PA’s 67-counties and a reproducing population is known to exist in Lawrence, Mercer, Butler, and Crawford Counties. Locally, birders fo-cus their attention on PA State Game Lands 284 near Leesburg. Also known as the Scholland’s Run Wetlands, most of SGL 284 is in Springfi eld Town-ship, Mercer County, and is called the Pennsy Swamp. A smaller section of SGL 284 is located in Lawrence Coun-ty, straddling the Washington Town-ship/Plain Grove Township line, and is known as the Black Swamp. Much like people head up to Benezette to see and hear the elk each Fall, avid bird-watchers fl ock (pun intended) to SGL 284 and the surrounding area to watch the sandhill cranes’ animated courtship dance each Spring and hear their “bu-gling” as they call repetitively to each other. Maybe, you’re a WBB reader who lives near SGL 284 or possibly just someone who enjoys observing sand-hill cranes. If you are, you can help out the PA Game Commission (PGC) and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service by participating in their Sandhill Crane Survey currently underway this Fall. Details are available on the PGC’s web-site (www.pgc,pa.gov) by searching “Sandhill Crane Survey”. In relative terms, the sandhill crane is a relatively new addition to PA’s avian biodiversity. If you’re inclined, your survey partici-pation can greatly aid in what’s known about the species. If you weren’t aware of our local sandhill crane population, I encourage you to take some time to get out and see them for yourself. You too will come to greatly appreciate this absorbing large bird! God Bless, Be Safe, and Great Outdoors!

Overfl owing FruitI chose you and appointed you so that you might go

and bear fruit—fruit that will last. John 15:16

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Galatians 5:16-25

During the spring and summer, I admire the fruit growing in our neighbor’s yard. Their cultivated vines climb a shared fence to produce large bunches of grapes. Branches dotted with purple plums and plump oranges dangle just within our reach. Although we don’t till the soil, plant the seeds, or water and weed the garden, the couple next door shares their bounty with us. They take responsibil-ity for nurturing their crops and allow us to delight in a portion of their harvest. The produce from the trees and vines on the other side of our fence reminds me of another harvest that benefi ts me and the people God places in my life. That harvest is the fruit of the Spirit. Christ-followers are commissioned to claim the benefi ts of living by the power of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:16–21). As God’s seeds of truth fl ourish in our hearts, the Spirit produces an increase in our ability to express “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (vv. 22–23). Once we surrender our lives to Jesus, we no longer have to be controlled by our self-centered inclina-tions (v. 24). Over time, the Holy Spirit can change our thinking, our attitudes, and our actions. As we grow and mature in Christ, we can have the added joy of loving our neighbors by sharing the benefi ts of His generous harvest. By: Xochitl Dixon

Refl ect & PrayLord, please cultivate the fruit of the Spirit in our

hearts and minds so our neighbors can enjoy Your sweet fragrance in and through our lives.

The fruit of the Spirit changes us so we can impact the lives of those around us.
