Dear friends, you are all here in Cordoba today to attend or participate in the 2014 13th World University Badminton Championship. This event is part of FISU’s wonderful programme featuring 24 World University Championships in 2014; back in 2012, these
championships had gathered 4,384 student athletes.
The World University Championships have been organised since 1962 under the auspices of FISU in 53 countries across the 5 continents, and they have gathered over 59,000 participants. In 2012, the number of World University Championships passed the 300 mark. There is no doubt that, in terms of number of participants, the 60,000 mark will be passed in 2014, making it a historic year for international university sport.
This year is marked by first editions in new disciplines. It is also worth noting that some of our members will host FISU events for the first time this year. After including basketball 3 x 3, netball and speed skating into its programme in 2012, FISU has added American football to the World University Championships progamme this year. In addition, after Chile and Azerbaijan entered the widening circle of FISU event organisers, Belarus, Malaysia and Singapore will organise FISU events for the first time.
The 2014 World University Championships represent the 26th edition of these competitions, which take place every two years in even-numbered years. They alternate with the Summer and Winter Universiades, which are organised in odd-numbered years. The championships provide a large number of students, teachers and sports leaders from various backgrounds with a place, in addition to the Universiades, to meet and share their experiences and ideas. The success of the championships has regularly increased over time. This shows how dynamic FISU member National University Sports Federations are more and more of them have put themselves forward for the organisation of a championship.
FISU actively supports those events and endeavors to satisfy students’ creativity and aspirations by regularly promoting innovative sports disciplines. The aim is to retain the spirit of play and encourage the development of an open and curious mind among university athletes. As university events, these World University Championships aim at the highest technical level and Excellence, which are basic requirements in university. In this sense, your presence here is already a sign of success. The International University Sports Federation, the National University Sports Federation of Spain and all the organisers wish to thank you for participating and hope that you will be warmly welcome here and find favorable conditions for the best practice of your sport.
In the name of FISU, I wish you an excellent Championship.Claude-Louis Gallien, FISU President

BIENVENIDA DEL PRESIDENTE DE FISU
At the beginning of the 19th century, competitive sport took its first steps, guided by one of its precursors and the father of the modern Olympics, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. It was in the United States, England and Switzerland that the first inter-university meets were held. They gradually led to the emergence of university sports associations, the first of which came into being in the United States in 1905. Unlike the Olympic Movement, which had an international structure from 1894 onwards, the International Confederation of Students wasn't established until 1919. It was this organisation's Sports Committee that was to launch the first World University Games in 1923.
Over 50 years, more than 300 championships have been organised, covering a large range of events (almost always different from the Universiade sports) and gathering participants from all over the world. Meant to guarantee continuity in the competition programme, these championships take place on even-numbered years and experience an increasing success over the years. They allow a large number of students and university sports leaders to get together on occasions other than Universiades. In 2000, 20 World University Championships were held in different places for different sports, attracting 3,623 participants. In 2002, 24 World University Championships were held, attracting 4,228 participants from 83 countries. In 2010, 27 championships were
staged, bringing together 4,431 participants. For 2012, 28 WUC were attributed.
The 2013, 2015 and 2017 editions of the Summer Universiade were attributed respectively to the cities of Kazan (Russia), Gwangju (Korea) and Taipei City (Tapei). The 2013 edition of the Winter Universiade has been attributed to Trentino (Italy), whereas the 2015 and 2017 events will be held in Granada (Spain) and Almaty (Kazakhstan) respectively.
FISU supports these competitions which give student-athletes the opportunity to come together from all around the world in a spirit of understanding and peace, with a view to obtaining results at high technical level.

WELCOME ADDRESS
PRESIDENT OF ORGANISING COMMITTEEPRESIDENTA DEL COMITÉ ORGANIZADOR

WELCOME ADDRESS
UNIVERSITY OF CORDOBA RECTORBIENVENIDA DEL RECTOR DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE CÓRDOBA
To all participants of the XIII World Badminton Championship. Dear friends, Let me warmly welcome all of you on behalf of the University of Córdoba.
I do hope that such an event will constitute a very special occasion in which every university member participating will be able to exchange both current experiences and further projects with all the other participating countries and, at the same time, it will reinforce among all of us the link of understanding that the practise of Sports can eventually generate.
We cannot forget that in a demanding professional society, such as ours, where the strongest competitiveness is the motto, the practice of Sports is becoming everyday more and more necessary s the only linking element to enhance healthy partnership and shared expression. Sports, therefore, can be an amazing communication vehicle among people and countries.
Events such as the one that today gathers all of us together can contribute to create and enhance those values, and the University of Córdoba wants to go further in its contribution, encouraging the sacrificed effort of its athletes and the “University vocation” which unfortunately, Sports sometimes lack. You can also be sure that every member of this World Championship Organizing Committee has already done and will continue to do all their best to make the most of your stay in
Spain with us and make you take back home an unforgettable image of these happy days we all are going to share. Once again, welcome to all of you!

UNIVERSITY OF CORDOBAUNIVERSIDAD DE CÓRDOBA The UCO is heir to a centuries-old historical and cultural legacy as well as a passion for
knowledge, tolerance, and harmony among civilizations, that have made the city that
houses our institution a paradigm for humanity.
This equilibrium and harmony is reflected in the three areas in which the UCO
undertakes its activities: Food and Agriculture, Science and Technology; Humanities
and the Legal and Social Sciences; and the Health Sciences; each with its own particular
characteristics.
This balance is also manifested in the quality of its teaching and research, ranking it among the top academic institutions in Spain. The
UCO is one of the foremost research institutions in Spain; a distinction that will be further consolidated with the ceiA3 (Agrifood
Campus of International Excellence), and the creation of the Rabanales 21 Science and Technology Park and the Maimonides
Institute for Biomedical Research. Our university is an international leader in the agrifood field, one of the institution's main strengths,
and also enjoys an enviable reputation in the humanities, in a city that is known worldwide for its artistic and monumental heritage.
A young, dynamic university, dedicated to research and in constant evolution, the UCO is firmly committed to the problems and needs
of the community at large. As a public institution, it has close links with the society it serves, but is also dedicated to aiding other
peoples and countries. The UCO also maintains strong ties with the business sector, while also structuring much of its own activity
around an entrepreneurial vision. Most importantly, it is an institution that is not only committed to training qualified professionals, but
to supporting and encouraging its students to grow as people and as citizens.
The Agrifood Campus of International Excellence (ceiA3)
The Agrifood Campus of International Excellence (ceiA3) is a joint initiative between the
Universities of Almería (UAL), Cádiz (UCA), Huelva (UHU), Jaén (UJA) and Córdoba
(UCO). Headed by the UCO, the objectives of the ceiA3 are ambitious and involve a firm
social commitment given that the agrifood sector of Andalusia provides a promising
future for our students as well as other young people in our community. The project
seeks to modernise and internationalise our universities so that they become a driver of
change towards a sustainable productive model based on knowledge and innovation.
The ceiA3 promotes this change by bringing together knowledge-generating institutions
in the same geographical area, including universities, research centres, and technology parks. It aims to encourage the transfer of this
knowledge to society and strengthen the university's role as an innovative institution that generates new knowledge for the benefit of
society at large.
The Maimonides Institute for Biomedical Research of Córdoba (IMIBIC)
This is a Health Research Institute accredited at national level by the Carlos III Health
Institute. It was founded on April 24th, 2008, following an agreement signed on June
29th, 2007, between the University of Cordoba and the Andalusian Regional
Government's Departments of Health and Innovation, Science and Business. The
IMIBIC is the result of an intense and fruitful collaboration between the University of
Córdoba and Reina Sofia University Hospital, the regional centre of the Andalusian
Public Health System, which is characterized by its high standards of health care and its
solid commitment to the training of health professionals.
Its management body is the Foundation for Biomedical Research in Cordoba (FIBICO,
in Spanish), which was founded on December 27th, 2007
University Institute of Research in Fine Chemistry and Nanotechnology (IUIQFN)
The IUIQFN is a University Research Institute whose main objective is to contribute,
in an effective and efficient manner, to the creation of knowledge (basic research),
development, and knowledge transfer (innovation) in the fields related to Fine
Chemistry and Nanotechnology. The lines of research of the institute address topics
of unquestionable interest related to health, agrifood, energy, environment and civil
engineering among others.

ABOUT CORDOBASOBRE CORDOBA
Córdoba is a city with an enormous cultural and monumental legacy. It’s ideal location, near to the river Guadalquivir together with the heritage of it’s different towns have made it the privileged place that it is. Córdoba is at the heart of Western history: its colossal caliph civilization, at the core in the Middle Ages, was the most brilliant in Europe in its time, a bridge between East and West.
It is one of the most visited Spanish capitals by tourists, partly due to it’s prodigious patrimonial and historical legacy. Cordoba gave the Roman civilization geniuses such as Séneca the philosopher or Lucano the poet, the Córdoba califal became the most learned and brilliant city in Europe during the X century where gifted men, poets, doctors, philosophers and spiritualists lived, some as universal as the philosopher Averroes or the Jewish doctor Maimónides. No less important, the city possesses accumulated patrimony following the Christian conquest. Churches,
convents, hospitals, palaces and numerous elegant houses envelop the unique jewel which is the Mosque Cathedral and make of Córdoba one of the most monumental cities of Europe. La UNESCO in 1994 recognised the universal importance of the Cordovan historical wealth, extending the title of Patrimony of Humanity not only to the Mosque - Cathedral but to the old town also.
Religious architecture.Mosque-Cathedral: Cordoba’s Mosque-Cathedral is the most important monument in western Islam and one of the most astonishing of the world. It’s history summarises the complete evolution of omeya architecture in Spain, besides the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture of Christian construction.
The place occupied by our Mosque-cathedral seems to have been, since the old days, dedicated to the cult of diverse divinities. Under Visigothic dominance, in the very site, the Saint Vicente basilica was built, on which was built, after payment for part of the site, the primitive mosque. This basilica, of rectangular floor, was shared by the Christian and Muslims during a period. As the Muslim population grew, the basilica was acquired totally by Abderraman I and destroyed for the definitive construction of the first Alhama Mosque or principal Mosque of the city. At this present time some constructive elements of the Visigothic building are integrated in the first section of Abderraman I.
The great Mosque consists of two differentiated areas, the patio or sahn porticoed, where the minaret is raised (under the Renaissance tower), the only intervention of Abd al - Rahman III, and the prayer room or harem. The interior space is arranged in symbolized columns and bicolour arcades of great chromatic effect. The enclosure is divided into five areas, each one corresponding to the different amplifications fulfilled.
Córdoba Synagogue (14th century), Fernandine and Alphonsine-style churches (13th century), Various monasteries and convents and Walcha Cave (built in 1489).
Civil and military architecture.Alcázar of the Christian Kings (14th century), Palace of Viana with its flowered patios (16th century), Royal residences and palaces, The Tower of Calahorra (14th century), The Door of the Bridge (16th century), The Plaza Vieja or Plaza Mayor, Walls and towers of the Muslim and also Christian period.
Arqueological sites: Roman archaeological remains (temple, mausoleum), Islamic archaeological remains (minarets preserved in the churches, Arab baths), Archaeological site of Madinat Al-Zahra (10th century), The Roman Bridge.
CORDOBA CLIMATELA CLIMATOLOGÍA DE CÓRDOBA
