Each year, in the fall, the residents of Hawthorne show off their talents @ our annual Craft Fair. Theevent is always held on the second Saturday in November. This year the Art and Craft Fair will be heldon November 8, 2014 from 9AM-2PM. Time to mark your calendar.

The sign up sheet has been on the Quad since April and will be removed on October 30th for finalization.

Last years crafters will have first choice of their same table location in the Hall. There is a list of guide-lines attached to the sign up sheet to view, if needed. New set up time for Friday will be 1:00 to 4:00 PMand set up on Saturday begins at 7:30 AM.

We are pleased to present the Show again in conjunction with a community wide Open House from ourReal Estate office. Open House will be from 10AM-2PM. The later hour will give our resident house sit-ters time to come to our Craft Fair first, or they have a choice of volunteering for 1,2,3 or 4 hours. This isthe fourth year for this successful joint venture. Once again, we will engage the VFW to help park carsfrom the neighboring communities. Our parking lots will be for Hawthorne residents use only.

Our Bocce Club will be serving a great lunch of both hot and cold selections including homemade soupswith to-go containers. Watch your bulletin for a flyer with the complete menu.

All rental fees go directly to Club Hawthorne for the betterment of OUR community. The fees also coverthe cost of advertising and Parking control.

Also mark your calendar to watch TV 98 on October 29th. The show will be allabout our upcoming Craft Fair. We will, also, profile various Clubs that will be rep-resented at our Fair.

AARP TAX-AIDE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

For many years, Hawthorne has provided help to our elderly and low income neighbors in the preparationand filing of their federal income taxes. Last year alone, Hawthorne prepared and submitted over 900 re-turns.

This service is totally free and is performed by tax aide preparers who freely volunteer their time. Preparersmust be trained and certified in order to prepare taxes and this training in basic tax law and computerized taxpreparation is provided by the AARP Foundation, in cooperation with the IRS.

In order to continue this tradition and service, we need volunteers. If you are interested in being part of thisservice oriented tax-aide volunteers, please contact George Sunday bye-mail at [email protected] orby phone at 315-380-3077.

Actual Tax preparation will be conducted Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 AM until noon at theMarina, February 2 through April 15. We generally work 2- 3 days per week.

As a volunteer tax preparer, you should be proficient in the use of a computer. Computers are provided.

There are facilitator opportunities, signing in and assisting customers in arranging their tax information inpreparation for the tax aide volunteers, if you are not interested in the actual tax preparation.

Thanks for your consideration.

thing a try. We have pencil workshops on Mondays at 9 o'clock and even pen and ink with

watercolor or oil. Tuesdays will be starting acrylic classes at 1 o'clock and Tuesday mornings

will be mailbox covers or floor cloth painting at 9:30. Wednesday mornings is open work-

shops currently but we are sure something exciting will fill that soon. Thursday morning at

9:30 is china painting, Thursday afternoons at 1:00 is beginning oil painting and Fridays is

clay.

We have instructors to get you started and supplies for you to try. All classes are free as

everything here is done on a volunteer basis. Once you find a medium you like you need

only buy your own supplies. Beginner zentangle class will be October 27 and there is a sign-

up sheet in the art room if you would like to try it.

Stop by, check it out. We have FUN. It is calming and therapeutic for the mind.

SHUFFLEBOARD

Well, the Snowbirds have started to return and we're getting ready for another exciting season of shuf-fleboard tournaments. However, it is noted that we have just completed fifteen summer tournamentshosted by the Hawthorne, Leesburg and Tavares Shuffleboard Clubs with an average turnout of aroundthirty players. The summer tournament series was initiated and coordinated by Hawthorne ShuffleboardChair George Fisher. Thanks go to George for keeping all the non-snowbird shuffleboard players busyand out of trouble this summer. Next year we anticipate forty to fifty players per tournament as thesetournaments were well received.

The first State Pro tournament ofthe new season will start October 6, 2014, here at Hawthorne and allshuffleboard players are encouraged to participate. Points will be awarded for those in the Pro and Ama-teur divisions. If you don't play, come on down and watch, it's interesting and a lot of fun to cheer onyour friends and neighbors.

Another exciting tournament will be the 80 year young plus tournament that was initiated and sponsoredby Bill & Fay Mynchenberg, long time pro players and shuffleboard instructors here at Hawthorne. Thisis a fun tournament to play in if you fit the age criteria but if you don't, come on down to the courts andwatch. The tournament will be held on October 28 with registration occurring at 8:30 a.m. Please bringfive dollars cash for registration. At this age, we do not accept checks or credit cards! Many thanks tothe Mynchenbergs for initiating this fun event and putting up the $200 sponsorship money. Please notethat the prizes are in cash just in case you want to spend some of your winnings fast!

Kay Lewis Tribute to Our Employees

Thanksgiving is certainly an appropriate time of the year to honor our employees. It is a time ofre-flection-a time when we think about all of the good things that we have in our lives and certainly ourdedicated employees are among the blessings that we have here in Hawthorne. Take a few minutes toreflect on all that our employees do for us to make our lives easier and better every day. Our employ-ees serve us continuously and graciously-Let's do a little extra to show them we really appreciatethem. This year Sally Schulte and I will be working hard trying to encourage every member of Haw-thorne to contribute something-whatever you can afford to do. Once again, the box will be in thehall from October 17 to November 26. It is your participation that makes the project successful.Let's make it better than ever! (Submitted by Elise Mrowca)

Memorial Fund Mission

At the very heart of our organization is the creation of memorials to those who have re-sided in Hawthorne and have died. We maintain large binders to record those who makedonations in memory of the deceased. Each page has the name of the deceased shownwith calligraphic lettering, giving the date of birth and death and on the reverse side thenames of donors.

Over the years we have added binders as needed. They are available for examination inthe Hawthorne Historical Museum/Conference Room in the Dan Gorden Hall. Since1973 we have recorded approximately 2,000 deaths of residents and former residents ofHawthorne. A cursory review of our Memorial Books reveals approximately 1,682 per-sons have been memorialized. This represents over 70% of those who have died. Begin-ning in 2012, all of these records were computerized as well, to provide a lasting memoryof those who have been remembered. A digital copy of these records is updated quarterlyand is kept in the Conference Room of Dan Gorden Hall and is available for residents touse.

The Memorial Fund makes possible a pleasant method to honor those friends and neigh-bors who die. You may simply place your donation to the Memorial Fund in the envelopeand card provided in the Clubhouse. You receive an acknowledgement of your donation. The next of kin is notified of your thoughtfulness. Your name as a donor appears on thepage of the, deceased in the Memorial Book, and the money is used to benefit Hawthorne.A record of your contribution will also be computerized and added to our website for oth-ers to see. To .learn more about your Memorial Fund check out our website at http://www.hawthornememorial.com/. There you will also find a listing of all of those deceasedwho are listed in the Memorial Books.

BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING

One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Unpaid volunteers areoften the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your communityand make it a better place. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand yournetwork and boost your social skills. Volunteering also strengthens your ties to the community and broad-ens your support network, exposing you to people with common interests, neighborhood resources and funand fulfilling activities.

Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. The bet-ter you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals.

Volunteering combats depression. A key risk factor for depression is social isolation. Volunteering keepsyou in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system, which in turn protects youagainst stress and depression when you're going through challenging times.

Volunteering helps you stay physically healthy. Volunteering is good for your health at any age, but it'sespecially beneficial in older adults. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortalityrate than those who do not, even when considering factors like the health of the participants. Volunteeringhas also been shown to lessen symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease.

Helping others kindles happiness.
