HOT TIP CORNER

BEWARE OF THE TELEPHONE SCAM! TheSunbeam Alumni Club Newsletter has reported thatpeople are receiving telephone calls from a manidentifying himself as a service technician from AT&T.He states that to complete the test, the person called is totouch 9, then 0, then # (pound sign) and then hang up.DON'T DO IT!!!!

By touching the 9,0, #, you give the requestingindividual full access to your telephone line, whichenables them to place long distance calls billed to yourhome phone number. The scam seems to haveoriginated in the prison system in the USA.

Do not press 9, 0, # for anyone!(Sunbeam Alumni Club Newsletter, MarchlApril2001)

community. It is very important for you to rememberthat while working in harness they should not be pettedor disturbed. Even when guide dogs are not working, donot pet them without first asking for permission.

If you wish to assist a person with a guide dog, fust ask, "May I help you?" Ifyour offer is accepted, then offer your left elbow. Do not grab the guide dog,the leash, the harness, or the person's arm. Doing somay place them in danger.

Do not feed a guide dog. Guide dogs are given aprepared diet at home, and additional feeding maydisturb their work schedule.

YOUR HEALTHThese Tests Could Save Your Life! The

American Cancer Society predicts startling figuresfor 2001: 98,200 new cases of colon cancer and37,200 new cases of rectal cancer will bediscovered in the United States. This is importantnews for seniors as old age is the single mostimportant risk factor for these cancers.

Beginning at age 50, men and womenshould have regular screenings that can find colonand rectal cancers early. Iffound early, thesecancers are highly treatable and curable. (Thosethat have a family history of colon or rectal cancershould be screened before age 50.)

For people with Medicare over age 50,Medicare will help pay for:

• A screening fecal occult blood test everyyear. This test looks for hidden blood in thestool.

• A flexible sigmoidoscopy every four years. The doctor inserts a slender, flexible tubeinto the rectum to look at the lining of therectum and lower part of the colon, and isable to find and sometimes remove polypsor cancers.

• A colonoscopy every two years for those athigh risk for cancer ofthe colon. The doctorinserts a slender, flexible tube into therectum to look at the lining of the rectumand entire colon, and is able to find andremove polyps and some cancers.

• A double contrast barium enema. Thedoctor can substitute this test for asigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. Bariumflows from a tube into the colon, creating anoutline around polyps and other growths sothey are visible on the x-ray.

***********************LEA VING FOR THE

SUMMER?

If you are leaving your home for the summermonths there are precautions to be taken. Mildew isa big problem. There are two words to

remember - CLEAN and DRY.Air conditioning can be used

to reduce potential moistureproblems, yet use a minimumamount of energy.

Leaving closet doors ajarand drawers open keeps moisture from

being trapped.Remember to turn off the water heater.

Turn off the water supply to the washer.Remove leaves and debris from gutters and

downspouts.Remove everything that is loose and

movable in your yard or carport. This includesbicycles, hose, sprinklers, flowerpots, hangingplants, baskets, and anything hanging on youroutside walls.
