Dear Parents and Carers

Great News! Our budding Art Scholars have cleaned up again at the Brisbane

Tram and Bus Special Children Association’s annual art competition. We have

nine winners as well as two memorial art trophy winners! Such a fantastic effort

from the crew, especially to Jess Parker, for her dedication to art. The winners

will be honoured with a special ceremony at the Botanical Gardens at Mount

Cootha on Thursday 26th

November.

New Ward for the Brisbane City Council- We recently had a visit from Councillor

Kim Marx of the Brisbane City Council. Her old ward of Karawatha is being

redrawn to the ward of Runcorn and she will be our local BCC Councillor in

2106. Kim is very motivated to work with the school and the P and C. Kim has

already organised some edible plants for Deb’s senior student garden, as well as

some donations for the end of year concert.

Westside Disability Services- In 2016, the school will partner up with the post

school transition service based at Acacia Ridge. Four of our senior students

visited for morning tea recently. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and

look forward to attending next year.

In this newsletter, you will get an insight into a senior classes community based

instruction. While the photos and story show the result of an excellent day, the

real story is the planning and teaching that goes into the day. Students work

with money, timetables, bus, train and ferry routes to organise the day. Keys to

the day are the use of many forms of communication, to enable the students to

play an active role in the day. These days are the culmination of years of hard

work by all the staff, so please enjoy this edition of the newsletter.

updated school web page (Google – Sunnybank

Special School). It takes a bit of time to load the

stories and images, but it’s lovely to see the

A major focus this term is on learning about Myths and Legends. This unit will also investigate – Fact and Fiction, Fantasy and Fallacy and True or False. We will also be investigating advertising and how advertising may take liberties with the truth in an attempt to promote their products.

We are continuing our work on Budgeting so that the students get a notion of how much things cost and how to make a weekly budget in order to manage their money in the best way possible. In Social Skills lessons we have been focusing on the emotion of anger. We are identifying the physical signs of anger and aiming for self-management of our anger.

A number of the students have been going out to alternate settings to experience life outside of the school. Jasmine has been visiting Multicap and enjoying the art activities. Belinda has been attending Westside and is undertaking a course in Life Skills. Three students – Caleb, Mahima and Courtney also went to an induction at Westside to facilitate an interest in activities and possible programs for the year 2016.

Our community outings have focused on the students learning how to use a Go Card and utilize public transport. We have been getting a bus or a train to get to our destinations. We have

been travelling to Southbank and utilizing a map of parklands the students have found various predetermined locations at Southbank. During our time

at Southbank some of the students challenged their fear of heights by going on the Wheel of Brisbane. It was amazing to see the students conquer their fears and develop a sense of pride in their

achievements. We also went on the City Cat whilst at Southbank. Some students had never been on a boat before. This was a challenge for them and they were absolutely delighted with their efforts. Recently, we got the train to South Brisbane Station and went to the Museum to see some of the displays.

The students have also been managing and running the school CAFÉ OLE’ program. The students have to take orders, organise the time when the orders are to be filled, make the order and deliver the order. This has also involved students collecting and counting money in a real world setting. The students have been engaging in this program as a means to raise money for their final year excursion to Australia Zoo at Beerwah. The students have done an amazing job and have run the Café largely on their own. Fantastic effort.

Also this term we have begun our school gardening program and have been liaising with Simon Purton the school facilities officer. We are clearing out and replanting existing gardens as well as making new gardens in an effort to beautify our school. Additionally students are learning a life skill regarding planning, planting and appropriate plants for particular areas. Hopefully this will develop some green thumbs in our students.

P&C News October

At the last P&C meeting, we had the pleasure of a visit from the Brisbane City Councillor for Karawatha Ward, Kim Marx. Kim has a strong history with P&C’s and has generously offered support to the P&C, including funding of the End of Year Awards and celebration. The P&C greatly appreciates the support and looks forward to an ongoing relationship between Cr Kim Marx and the school.

Just a reminder that the P&C has Sold Out of school hats, and due to increased production costs we will no longer be ordering them. Broad brimmed, navy coloured hats are available at retailers such as Best and Less, and Kmart. The

school shorts are still on sale at the great price of $10 each - get an order in for summer! Please see the order form below for available sizes.

Jenny (John’s mum) is doing a fantastic job organizing an End of Year Raffle with 5 hampers full of wonderful prizes including DVD’s, and board games to keep the family entertained over the holidays! Keep an eye out for tickets coming home in November.

Thanks for your support!

Next P&C Meeting:

The last scheduled meeting for the calendar year is Tuesday November 24th in the school meeting room at 9.00am, all welcome!

Did you know? Families are most welcome to bring a friend or family member, to act as interpreter at P&C meetings!
