Background

• Urban water utilities are large users of energy (particularly

electricity ~$0.5B/year)

• Significant changes in the electricity sector, NEM,

government policies, rising prices

• Energy Management (EM) is a looming issue

• Growing expectations for operational cost containment, emissions

reduction

• Water utility staff need to be aware of the issue and improve

their capability

• 2016 WSAA EM Benchmarking Project (27 utilities) showed

major deficiency in EM Training and Development (EMTD)

• Improving Energy Outcomes is part of the response to

address this gap

Project overview

Aim

• Help water utilities achieve improvements in energy

outcomes by enhanced internal capability through training

resources

Objectives

1. Develop Knowledge & Skills matrix to help identify required

competencies

2. Create an Energy Management Awareness level training

guide

3. Identify available and relevant energy training products and

services

Energy Management 101 Guide

• Awareness level introductory training course guide

• Could be delivered by internal trainer/facilitator, or guide for

individual learning

• Six modules, reflecting EM tasks likely to be undertaken by

different functions

• Module 1 is energy/ electricity basics; foundation

• Provides BASIC AWARENESS level knowledge and skills, NOT

detailed technical information. Introduces concepts, processes

and principles.

• For higher level learning - access training courses identified in

training inventory
