Who publishes in “predatory” journals?
• Statistical analyses verify that each group of journals has a distinct author population. Those who publish in “predatory” journals are, for the most part, young and inexperienced researchers from developing countries. We believe that economic and sociocultural conditions in these developing countries have contributed to the differences found in authorship between “predatory” and “nonpredatory” journals

Question mark?
We examined nearly 20 million scientific articles and recorded the development of articles with a question mark at the end of their titles over the last 40 years. Our study was confined to the disciplines of physics, life sciences and medicine, where we found a significant increase from 50% to more than 200% in the number of articles with question-mark titles. We looked at the principle functions and structure of the titles of scientific papers, and we assume that marketing aspects are one of the decisive factors behind the growing usage of question-mark titles in scientific articles.

مقدمه - مثال
E-journals have proved an undoubted success and study after study have demonstrated very high levels of usage, information seeking behaviour and, to a more limited extent, satisfaction. However, it might be expected that there would be differences, possibly large ones, between subjects and individual institutions and this paper sets out to ascertain this in some detail, employing deep log methods for this purpose. It is believed that this is the first time UK researchers have been the subject of such an evaluation....

Conferenece Vs Journals
• in CS, Conferences are more prestigious• It is the recommendation of Computer Research Association
(CRA) in 1999• They are preferred, at least for Experimentalists• Acceptance rates at very selective CS conferences are between
13% and 20%.• Conference paper: 4-5 referees, Journal article: 2-3 referees• Conferences have higher standards of novelty. Journals often
only require 20-30% of the material to be new, compared to an earlier conference version.
• CS journals have their role, often to publish deeper versions of papers already presented at conferences.
Hamid R. Jamali 95
What conference?
• acceptance rate• review process• program committee• who the publisher of the proceedings is• which database is indexing the published
proceedings
Hamid R. Jamali 96
Example of a good conference
The ACM/IEEE International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) is the top forum for architecture and has been so since 1975. ISCA papers are 10-12
pages in length with detailed results, and go through around 5-6 double-blind reviews by the top experts on the topic. The acceptance rate is 15-20%, decided by a
National Science Foundation (NSF) - panel-style, 20-person program committee. ISCA takes only 30-35
papers a year (there are no short papers, no posters).

the year it is published. • The journal Immediacy Index indicates how quickly articles in a journal
are cited. • The Immediacy Index is calculated by dividing the number of citations to
articles published in a given year by the number of articles published in that year.
• Frequently issued journals may have higher II and vice versa• Useful for comparing journals in cutting-edge research
Hamid R. Jamali
130
aggregate Immediacy Index

Journal Impact Factor

ارزیابی• IF is the average number of times articles from the journal
published in the past two years have been cited in the JCR year.
• The Impact Factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations in the JCR year by the total number of articles published in the two previous years.
• E.g. IF=2.5 means that, on average, the articles published one or two year ago have been cited two and a half times.
• Citing articles may be from the same journal

5-Year Journal Impact Factor
• is the average number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year. It is calculated by dividing the number of citations in the JCR year by the total number of articles published in the five previous years.
• It is available only in JCR 2007 and subsequent years.
Hamid R. Jamali
134
Aggregate Impact Factor
• The aggregate Impact Factor for a subject category is calculated the same way as the Impact Factor for a journal,
• The Impact Factor mitigates the importance of absolute citation frequencies. It tends to discount the advantage of large journals over small journals because large journals produce a larger body of citable literature. For the same reason, it tends to discount the advantage of frequently issued journals over less frequently issued ones and of older journals over newer ones. Because the journal impact factor offsets the advantages of size and age, it is a valuable tool for journal evaluation.
Hamid R. Jamali
135
Median Impact Factor
• is the median value of all journal Impact Factors in the subject category.

Journal Citing Half-Life
• The citing half-life is the median age of articles cited by the journal in the JCR year.
• For example, in JCR 2007, the journal XX has a citing half-life of 9.0. That means that 50% of all articles cited by articles in XX in 2007 were published between 1999 and 2007 (inclusive).
• Only journals that publish 100 or more cited references have a citing half-life
Hamid R. Jamali
137
Aggregate Citing Half-Life
• The aggregate citing half-life is calculated the same way as the journal citing half-life, and its significance is comparable. For a subject category, the citing half-life is the median age of articles cited by journal in the category in the JCR year.
• For example, in JCR 2003, the subject category Geochemistry & Geophysics has a citing half-life of 9.9. That means that 50% of all articles cited by articles in Geochemistry & Geophysics journals in 2003 were published between 1994 and 2003 (inclusive).
Hamid R. Jamali
138
Journal Cited Half-Life
تعداد سالهایی که از سال ارزیابی •باید به عقب برگردیم تا شاهد پنجاه
درصد ارجاعات کل به مجله در سال مورد ارزیابی باشیم.
• The median age of the articles that were cited in the JCR year. Half of a journal's cited articles were published more recently than the cited half-life. For example, in JCR 2001 the journal Crystal Research and Technology has a cited half-life of 7.0. That means that articles published in Crystal Research and Technology between 1995-2001 (inclusive) account for 50% of all citations to articles from that journal in 2001.
• Only journals cited 100 or more times in the JCR year have a cited half-life.
Hamid R. Jamali
Journal Cited Half-Life-continued
• A higher or lower cited half-life does not imply any particular value for a journal.
• For instance, a primary research journal might have a longer cited half-life than a journal that provides rapid communication of current information. Cited half-life figures may be useful to assist in collection management and archiving decisions. Dramatic changes in cited half-life over time may indicate a change in a journals format. Studying the half-life data of the journals in a comparative study may indicate differences in format and publication history.

Aggregate Cited Half-Life
• The aggregate cited half-life is calculated the same way as the journal cited half-life, and its significance is comparable. For both journals and subject categories, the cited half-life is the median age of the articles that were cited in the JCR year. The aggregate cited half-life is an indication of the turnover rate of the body of work on a subject. For example, in JCR 2003 the subject category Energy & Fuels has a cited half-life of 7.0. That means that articles published in Energy & Fuels journals between 1997-2003 (inclusive) account for 50% of all citations to articles from those journals in 2003.

141
Eigenfactor Score
• The Eigenfactor Score measures the number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year.
• Like the Impact Factor, the Eigenfactor Score is essentially a ratio of number of citations to total number of articles. However, unlike the Impact Factor, the Eigenfactor Score:
• Counts citations to journals in both the sciences and social sciences.
• Eliminates self-citations. Every reference from one article in a journal to another article from the same journal is discounted.
Hamid R. Jamali
142
Article Influence Score
• measures the relative importance of the journal on a per-article basis. It is the journal's Eigenfactor Score divided by the fraction of articles published by the journal. That fraction is normalized so that the sum total of articles from all journals is 1.
• The mean Article Influence Score is 1.00. A score greater than 1.00 indicates that each article in the journal has above-average influence. A score less than 1.00 indicates that each article in the journal has below-average influence.

Dear Hamid,You have put together a very well presented and useful paper on
a significant topic which I am accepting for publication in the March 2009 issue of JAL. ….
Please accept my congratulations on a nice addition to the professional literature.

Dear HamidI have received three positive reports on your paper with just minorrevisions required before publication.
Hamid R. Jamali
173
Revise major problems and resubmit
• has been provisionally accepted for publication. However, the referee recommended major revisions.
• I am happy to inform you that your paper ms, "Scholarly e-book usage in UK universities…" has been provisionally accepted for publication. However, the referee recommended major revisions. We will reconsider the paper after the revision.

Rejected but will entertain a resubmit
Articles in this category have been rejected, but the editor indicates a willingness to read a revision.
Hamid R. Jamali
example
• Hamid,I have had three reviews done of your article (all by astronomers orscientists) - they are a little bit harsh.
• One says "The article is competent but really I didn’t see anything original. .
• Another simply says "the paper could be improved in clarity, …• However, the main referee wrote the following...
The quality of this paper is very poor….• I have copied this reply to David and perhaps you might like to consider
your next course of action. I myself quite like the article and think it would be a different paper from the ones we normally receive for TEL. I don't think it should be rejected, but it clearly does need some further work and tidying up- so please let me know whether you will revise it.
175Hamid R. Jamali
Rejected and dismissed
This is an absolute rejection, with reviewers' reports attached to back up the editors' claim that the article "is not publishable" or "is not ready for publication" or "cannot be published at this time" or "does not meet our standards for publication" or "is not right for us."
176Hamid R. Jamali
177
Examples
• I have, therefore, decided to decline this paper but hope you will continue to keep JAL in mind for your more substantial usual efforts.
• Dear Hamid, Reviewers' comments on your work have now been received. You will see that they are advising against publication of your work. Therefore I must reject it.
Hamid R. Jamali
178
Rejected by editor
This is an absolute rejection without any reviewers' reports attached.
"best of luck!“An initial review of your article has made it clear that this submission is
inappropriate for Information Research.the paper is purely descriptive and lacks any theoretical
grounding for the work. Nor does the analysis provide any theoreticalperspective.
Hamid R. Jamali
179
What if rejected?
• Don’t get disappointed• examine why• make changes, find another target, or • make significant change?• Improve and submit somewhere else• Maybe even to a better journal
