I could not hide my bubbling _____________________________ about today. I was getting my very first puppy! My parents finally gave in to my ___________________________ pleading and guilt trips about how responsible I always am; therefore deserving of my very first pet. Early, on a sunny Saturday morning, we marched over to Myrtle’s Pet Shop to make our selection. We decided it would be best to take the puppies out of their pens to see how they reacted to us. The first little puffball seemed extremely __________________________ with us; he turned up his tiny button nose and stood in a corner by himself! The next dog actually _____________________ when we tried to pet her! She seemed to jump a mile at our touch! The third dog did not act much better. He gave us a _________________________ stare and didn’t seem to want to have anything to do with people or the other puppies. I was beginning to get worried when, out of the blue, a fourth puppy began to put on a performance for us. He was exceptionally _______________________ in his movement; he balanced a ball on his nose, turned two flips in the air, and finally ended in a perfect sitting position. It was like nothing I had ever seen! I knew we had to have this puppy. It seemed, at the time, that nothing could be done to ________________________________ his wonderful behavior; he was perfect just the way he was! My parents seemed happy with my pick of a pup, but of course, they warned me about the upcoming _________________________ issues that we may have to deal with: accidents in the house, chews marks on various articles of clothing and furniture, and inevitably, noisy barking and whining. I, on the other hand, had faith in myself that I would be ____________________ enough to take on this new responsibility. After all, what could go wrong when you choose an absolutely perfect, _________________________________ dog?

A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition, its object, and any modifiers of the object. The object of the preposition is the noun or pronoun following the preposition.

People communicate in many ways. (The preposition is in, the object of the preposition is ways, and the prepositional phrase is in many ways.)

Sometimes the same word can be used as a preposition or as an adverb. If there is no object, the word is an adverb.
