  • The works FRANK LLOYD WRIGHTof

    Part 2

  • EDGAR J. KAUFMANN HOUSE(FALLING WATER)Perhaps Wrights most famous house, the Kaufmann house is a perfect example of the integration between house and setting. Concrete cantilevered terraces seem to float above the river and shallow falls. The house is approached through a tree-lined path then one crosses over a small bridge.

  • EUGENE GILMORE HOUSEThe residence, built originally for the University of Wisconsin law professor Eugene Gilmore, was designed at about the same time as the Robie House. Like the classic Prairie House, it has the sense of horizontality, emphasized by a low hipped roof and wide sweeping eaves. It features rows of leaded casement windows and it has a cantilevered porch roof.

  • The house was added on to in the 1930s. The addition included a new entrance; instead of the ground level basement entrance, external stairs now lead to an entry way off the living room. The living quarters are above street level, both for privacy and for the view.

  • FRANK THOMAS HOUSEThis was Wrights first Prairie styled house in Oak Park. Like the Heurtley house, it has leaded glass windows, a protected arch entrance, and horizontality, emphasized by the ribbon windows, projecting eaves and a low-pitched roof.

  • HILLSIDE HOME SCHOOL

  • ROBIE HOUSEThis prairie styled house has overhanging cantilevered roofs which extend beyond walls. The house is adjusted to the natural environment, though not as spectacular as the Kaufmann house since its site is urban. Strip windows open the rooms up to nature as well.

  • Like the entrance to many of the Wright houses, this one is concealed around to the back actually. One enters on the ground floor and walks up a flight of stairs to the main living room area.
