Part 1Part 1

Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church

Wright’s circular design uses 2 important elements from Greek orthodox churches: the dome, and the Greek cross. The shallow concrete dome (106 ft in diameter) is superimposed in a floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross; the Greek cross inscribed within a circle is a key design element of the church as well. ALINE BARNSDALL HOUSE (HOLLYHOCK)

Like the Charles Ennis house executed later, this unique house executes Wright’s fascination with pre-Columbian architecture, in this case, Mayan temples. Stylized patterns of hollyhocks, projecting pinnacles, and a site on a hill surrounded by olive trees and other foliage complete the historical “look” of this house, transplanted to Southern California.

ARTHUR HEURTLEY HOUSEThis “Prairie-styled”

house has projecting bands of Roman brick which emphasize the horizontal lines of the structure. The wide overhanging roof associates the building with the flat contours of nature and serves as a protection against the extremes of temperature.

The main living room area is on the second floor with a children’s playroom and laundry area on the first. The wide low entrance arch has parallels with H.H. Richardson’s entrances.

CHARLES ENNIS(ENNIS-BROWN HOUSE)

Wright’s fascination with pre-Columbian architecture is evident in his use of plain and textured concrete blocks and the stepped-back stages of the walls, reminiscent of the pyramids.
