The story takes us through aselection of the incidents an elite army bomb squad unit have to dealwith during their rotation, not least of which is a sniper shoot out inthe Iraqi desert, which is so painfully accurate it’s almostuncomfortable. Bishop's Stortford’s rich history can be traced back to Saxontimes and is called Estereford in the 1086 Domesday Book.The town and the River Stort are named after an importantSaxon family known as Steorta and, along with its’ castle wassold to the Bishops of London in 1060, and was seized byKing John in the early 13th century. During the Middle Agesit became a thriving market town. By the 18th centuryBishops Stortford was a staging post on mail coach routesbetween London, Cambridge and Newmarket. Many of theinns and hostels built at that time still exist today. Theopening of the River Stort to navigation in 1769, the linkingof the town to the railway in the 19th century, and thedevelopment of Stansted Airport have all caused rapidexpansion, and Bishop's Stortford today is a popularcommuting town which has maintained all of its character.The charming countryside contains many attractive andcolourful villages. LONDON STANSTED AIRPORTStansted. Stansted Airport started life as a base for the US ArmyAirforce. They built one of the longest runways in the UK, which madeit a natural choice for civil flights, but Stansted really took off when itwas designated the third London Airport in 1979. Its’ position becameeven more secure with the opening of the direct rail link to London’sLiverpool Street and to Cambridge and the Midlands.
