October 2016

“God or gods?” — Pastor EricMy Pastoral reflection for October is a paraphrase of an article written by Peter Marty. After reading his article it made me think long and hard about the importance of BELIEVE: Think UAct UBe and how important it is to know whatwe REALLY believe for it forms our pursuits in life.

When the question of religion comes up people will say something like “Yeah sure Ibelieve in God” or “yeah going to church is ok, when I get to the next stage of lifeI’ll make more time for it” or “Readingthe Bible would be a good thing but, Ijust don’t have time”.

Perhaps a better way of looking at it is“what are you really hungry for in life?” What are your deepest yearnings? What are your deepest desires? Inother words what kind of yearnings areyou willing to organize your life around?

If we are willing to talk long and honestly enough about our heart’s desires and what we truthfully organize our livesaround, we will soon discover what God or gods we actually worship. “Computershave no aspirations, no curiosity, no desire. Smartphones can’t delight in goals ororganize their existence around meaningful pursuits. Left alone, these devices sit passively. But we, in our thirst for satisfying deep human desires, have a built in restlessness.”

In our American culture our deepest longings are rarely if ever are satisfied because they typically are defined by a purchasable possession. “A want easily becomes a have in a materially comfortable world. Just go and buy it, whatever “it” happens to be!”

Yet, faith is never about possessing anything, much less God. FAITH REVOLVESAROUND SEEKING GOD. Real spiritual desire evaporates when we focus on whatwe can get from God, because the focus is ultimately about us and not on God.

As we head into fall, I firmly believe that anyone who will invest some time in someway being part of BELIEVE: Think UAct UBe — will find themselves desiringmore of God and desiring less of the gods of this world. I hope and pray you willgive it a try!

God bless you and I’ll see you in worship this Sunday!

Blessings,

Pastor Eric

Upcoming Preaching ThemesSunday, 10/2 “BELIEVE: ThinkUAct UBe”Text 2 Peter 1:1-11

Theme As we prepare to jump into “BELIEVE: Think UAct UBe” it’s important to understand that what we really believe drives our actions and who we are becoming. This is also true in our life of faith. In 2 Peter, the writer invites us to begin with a firm foundation and then build on what we think/believe and shows us how ultimately that determines what we do.

Questions to Think About as You Read:

1) What is the “foundation” in 2 Peter 1:1-11?2) How does what you believe about stuff in life drive what you do?3) Are you becoming the person of faith you’d like to become or what you believe

God wants you to be? Why? Would you like to do something about it?

Special Event: 12 Noon – Baptism Class/Family Room

Sunday, 10/9 “BELIEVE: Think – What do I Believe, Who is God?”

Text 2 Corinthians 13:14Theme The Bible never tries to prove the existence of God and God can’t be

proved scientifically. There is a “leap of faith” involved. So what do we mean when we say, “we believe in God?”

Questions to Think About as You Read:

1) How have you experienced God as the Creator?2) How have you experienced God as Jesus?3) How have you experienced God as The Holy Spirit?

Special Event: 12 Noon – New Member Class & Luncheon/Fellowship Hall

Sunday, 10/16 “BELIEVE: Think – A Personal God”Text Psalm 121:1-8Theme Scripture reminds us that there is a very personal aspect of God’s

relationship to creation. We are reminded that God is good and God has a plan and that God cares for us.

Questions to Think About as You Read:

1) How have you experienced the goodness of God?2) When have you known God was searching your heart?3) How does God show care and concern for us when we go through difficult

seasons in life?

Sunday, 10/30 “BELIEVE: Think – Salvation”Text Ephesians 2:8-9Theme Scripture provides wisdom for living. Even more important it reveals to

us the importance of a relationship with God.

Questions to Think About as You Read:

1) There are many different types of relationships. How would you define a relationship with God?

2) What does the word “salvation” bring to mind?3) How did or have you come to know Christ died for you?

Contemporary Music Ministry“The heavens declaring Your glory; the skies sing the work of Your handsAnd day after day, they call out and say, “Believe”The oceans are telling Your story over and over againWave after wave, they call out and say, “Believe”Oh, what a revelation: You’ve lifted our heads and opened our eyes. And this is our declaration:We believe, we believe You are God. We believe, we believe You are goodYou have conquered the grave, taken our sin awayWe believe, we believe ev’ry word You have breathedWe believe we are Yours, and with each breath You give usWe will proclaim: We believe, we believe”

These are the lyrics to a song from Steven Curtis Chapman that go along with ourBELIEVE curriculum that begins this month. The contemporary worship team will beteaching this song and many others this year. The songs will go along with thechapters in the BELIEVE book and with the sermons on Sunday. Our prayer is thatthe lyrics to the songs will be just one more way to get God’s word into our heartsand minds. What we BELIEVE does make a difference in our lives. It makes a difference in our homes, our work and in our relation-ships. God inspired the Word to show us how to “Think like Jesus, Act like Jesus and Be like Jesus.” Let the journey begin!

Servant Supper — Sunday October 23rd 5-6 p.m.

Last month we served 70 guests!!Come be a part of a ministry thathelps serve those who need a mealor social time with others. Eatingtogether with our guests helps usto reach out as a church and be acommunity to those who may nothave anyone in their life.

This program is solely done withvolunteer help. We ask that yousign up on the sheet on the bulletinboard in the Narthex so that weknow how many volunteers arecoming and can plan accordingly.Servant Supper has been an activeministry since 2008 and has continued to be a great experienceof sharing with one another andthose who attend.
