Dear Friends, Where in the world was Colin Kay?That was then. This is now: “Where in the world is Joe Doyle?No worries. He’ll be back by the time you read this. All will be well. But now that both our priests are home safe and sound, here’s a much better question for us—for each of usto be asking. “Where in the world am I?” It’s not, of course, primarily a question of longitude and latitude or your ten-digit grid coordinate. “I’m in Fair Lawn. I’m in Elmwood Park. I’m in Saddle Brook.” Though, come to think of it, that’s not really a bad place to start, but the truth is we spend so much of our time in our heads and so much of our time “anywhere but here.” We’re in the past. We’re in the future. Worries. Regrets. We miss the here and the now. People in Twelve-Step recovery programs have a good saying: Keep your head where your feet are. In other words, stay here. Stay now. Of course we need to plan for the future. Sure we need to learn from the past. But we need to bring our heads (and our hearts) back, over and over, to where our feet are planted. And we need to be honest about where our feet are. A little like Peter. Do you remember last Sunday’s gospel? At Jesus’ invitation, Peter steps out of the boat and onto the deep. How about you? Where are your feet? Maybe some of us have our feet out on the water. We’re walking tall and strong. We feel God near and we know that all things are possible. That’s a nice place to be, grateful and hopeful. But maybe some of us, like Peter, feel the blowing of the winds and the rolling of the waves. Maybe we feel like we’re going down. That’s a hard place to be, frightened and discouraged. Wherever we are, the first “step” is honesty—honesty about where we are and what’s going on, in us and around us. Like the woman in this Sunday’s gospel. “My daughter is tormented by a demon,” she cried out to Jesus. No beating around the bush. No pretty words. No pretending. No excuses. My feet are here: This is who I am. This is where I am. This is what’s going on. To be honest with yourself. To be honest with maybe at least one other person. To be honest with God. It’s a start. “Lord, save me!” “Lord, my daughter!” He will hear. He will reach out his hand. He will pull us up. He will heal. Love, Fr Colin

  • Dear Friends,

    “Where in the world was Colin Kay?” That was then. This is now: “Where in the world is Joe Doyle?” No worries. He’ll be back by the time you read this. All will be well.

    But now that both our priests are home safe and sound, here’s a much better question for us—for each of us—to be asking.

    “Where in the world am I?”

    It’s not, of course, primarily a question of longitude and latitude or your ten-digit grid coordinate.

“Lord, save me!” “Lord, my daughter!”

    He will hear. He will reach out his hand. He will pull us up. He will heal.

    Love,

    Fr Colin

    Pope’s Monthly Intention The following is the universal prayer intention which Pope Francis has designated for the month of August:

    "That all refugees forced by violence to flee their homes may find a generous welcome and the protection of their rights."

    MEDITATION

    The Temper (I) BY GEORGE HERBERT How should I praise thee, Lord! How should my rhymes

    Gladly engrave thy love in steel,

    If what my soul doth feel sometimes,

    My soul might ever feel!

    Although there were some forty heav'ns, or more,

    Sometimes I peer above them all;

    Sometimes I hardly reach a score; Sometimes to hell I fall.

    O rack me not to such a vast extent;

    Those distances belong to thee: The world's too little for thy tent,

    A grave too big for me.

    Wilt thou meet arms with man, that thou dost stretch

    A crumb of dust from heav'n to hell? Will great God measure with a wretch?

    Shall he thy stature spell?

    O let me, when thy roof my soul hath hid, O let me roost and nestle there:

    Then of a sinner thou art rid,

    And I of hope and fear.

    Yet take thy way; for sure thy way is best:

    Stretch or contract me thy poor debtor:

    This is but tuning of my breast, To make the music better.

    Whether I fly with angels, fall with dust,

    Thy hands made both, and I am there;

    Thy power and love, my love and trust, Make one place ev'rywhere.

    St. Anne’s Men’s Cornerstone

    Dear Parishioners:

    Our 2014 Street Faire will take place from September 12th through September 14

    th.

    The Street Faire is a wonderful opportunity for our St. Anne’s community and friends to come together to

    enjoy a wonderful time.

    This is a family experience to be enjoyed by all. It’s also a fund raising event to support the maintenance of

    all our parish facilities. As we all know from our own homes, the cost of maintaining our properties seems

    to sky rocket every year. The Street Faire will generate revenue to help defray these yearly costs. ALL of

    the money is for this purpose.

    We have asked businesses in the local communities to support St. Anne’s through donations. If you have a

    business and you’d love more publicity at a reasonable cost, this is for you! For example, for $500 your

    name could go on a big banner that will be displayed on-site all through the Faire, and would also be

    featured in our bulletin. Call the rectory for more details!!!

    Thank you all for your ongoing support and love for our parish. We look forward to seeing you at the Faire!
