Dear Friends, I recently came across this Op-Ed piece, written by Anne Roiphe, a feminist and a pro-abortion activist, which had been published in the New York Times a number of years ago. I hesitated to comment on it because I know that abortion is a very sensitive issue, one on which good people disagree. But I felt that it raised such an important point that it deserved consideration. I hope that you may find it worthy of your attention also. Ms. Roiphe’s essay was entitled “Moment of Perception”. The piece was remarkable for its argument, and more so for its conclusion. Her argument was surprising because she took issue with one of the chief assertions of the pro-abortion position, i.e. that there is an absolute difference between what is in the womb and life outside of it. For some, the fetus is just a piece of tissue; it is not really a life at all. Roiphe argued that this claim did not stand up either to scientific evidence, nor to the experiences of pregnant women. One need not believe that God creates human life at the instant sperm and egg merge to accept that the potential for human life is sparked at that moment. You don’t have to be an evangelical Christian to believe that a fetus will become a baby, just as a 1-year-old will soon become a 2-year-old, and a 2-year-old will become an impossible adolescent. As I said, this is a remarkable argument from someone who supports abortion. She was agreeing with the pro- life position that what is in the womb is a human life, albeit in its first stages of a lifelong formation. She then, however, went on to say that abortion, although unfortunate, was still a right, even in late-term situations, especially when the fetus is severely deformed or when the mother is in danger. Why could she write this? Because for her life is a relative value, not an absolute one. Human life is sacred, but sometimes not as sacred as another human life; the unborn do not weigh the same on the ethical scale as the born...it makes far more sense to think of abortion as a difficult issue, different at different months of pregnancy and at different times in a mother’s life. Sometimes it is a sacrilege to make absolute rules about things that are relative. We live on slippery slopes. Ms. Roiphe is quite right when she says that abortion is a difficult issue. The women with whom I have spoken who have had abortions found it to be a very difficult choice and one from which they are still grieving. Personally, I feel for them and I believe that we have to do all that we can to help them and to listen to them to better understand why they made that choice. We cannot condemn them. Nor can we continue to speak against laws that allow for this choice without also trying to do something to improve the conditions that encourage it. However, to my mind, Ms. Roiphe has painted herself into an untenable position. Given what we’ve experienced over the past century and a half, we cannot assert that some human lives are not as sacred as others. To claim that is to justify slavery, the Holocaust, the Gulag, 9-11, and all the horrors of ISIL. It is, as Pope Francis reminded us this past week, to still argue for the use of capital punishment and of armed conflict. The whole point in acknowledging that there is an absolutely sacred dimension to life is to remove it from the “politics as usual” that has led to such abuses as described above. Only in this way do we have a foundation on which we can construct a civilization worthy of the name “human”. Love, Fr. Joe

She was agreeing with the pro-life position that what is in the womb is a human life, albeit in its first stages of a lifelong formation.

The whole point in acknowledging that there is an absolutely sacred dimension to life is to remove it from

the “politics as usual” that has led to such abuses as described above. Only in this way do we have a foundation on which we can construct a

civilization worthy of the name “human”.

ALTERNATIVE TO ABORTION If you know someone who is considering having an abortion, here is a number that they might call that could be of help to them to consider an alternative to this practice. The number is 1-800-395-HELP (4357).

BACK TO OUR ROOTS

Will meet this Thursday, October 8th from 1-2 PM in the Faith Center

MEDITATION A ROSE Joe Ricciardi

I bring you a rose

which you yourself created!

Did you create the rose

so that I could bring it,

or me, so that I

would find the rose

and bring it to you?

So, I give myself a rose.

Thank you for the gift

of roses which I give back,

with my hands opening.

I love your roses and you.

Can you smell what you’ve made?

I can! They are exquisite

as you must be

to have thought of all this?

How I wish you had hands

So that you could take roses!

I hope only that you can smell them!

They are like incense!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“So out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast

of the field and every bird of the air, and brought

them to the man to see what he would call them; and

whatever the man called every living creature, that

was its name.” – Genesis 2:19

The creation story reminds us of two important

points. First, since the start, God has put the entire

world into our care. Second, stewardship has been

around since the beginning of mankind, it isn’t

something recently invented by the Church. Just as

past generations built our Church, it is now our

responsibility to continue to nurture and develop

these gifts for future generations.

During October Pope Francis asks us to pray especially ...that human trafficking, the modern form of slavery, may be eradicated.

Eucharistic Adoration Friday, October 9th 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Concluding with Benediction at 6 pm

Please volunteer to pray one hour before our Lord.

Sign-up sheet in the church vestibule.

Science and technology are not neutral; from the beginning to the end of a process, various intentions and possibilities are in play and can take on distinct shapes. No one is suggesting a return to the Stone Age, but we need to slow down and look at reality in a different way, to [maintain] the positive and sustainable progress that has been made, but also to recover the values and the great goals swept away by our unrestrained delusions of grandeur.

Pope Francis from his encyclical Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home

Page 4: Fr. Joe - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/stannechurch/documents/bulletin-10-3-4-15.… · unfortunate, was still a right, even in late-term situations, ... use of capital punishment

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

We are proud to announce that in association with BOLD (Being Our Lord Disciples) Youth Ministry, St. Anne’s has hired a Youth Minister for both our Junior High and Senior High young people. We hope you will all get to know her and we look forward to a fruitful ministry for our youth!

R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Did You Know…..

The Second Vatican Council looked back at how the early Church initiated those who wanted

to learn how to live as part of the Catholic community and restored the “catechumenate”

process that we use today (which is also known as R.C.I.A.) . If you (or someone you know) are not a Catholic and you are curious about the Catholic faith,

or are Catholic but have not completed your sacraments,

We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment.

Our parish will soon begin a set of sessions to share with others the beauty of the Catholic faith and the

fellowship of our church family. These sessions are also opportunities for you to ask any questions you may

have about the Church.

We meet on the 1st and 3

rd Monday of the month at 7:00 pm. All sessions are held

at the Rectory.

Our regular sessions begin on Oct. 5th

at 7:00pm.

Feel free to join us. Please give us a call if you have questions or would like further info. at 201-791-1616.

Tickets will be on sale for $60 in the rectory, after select masses, and by contacting Jennifer Caluri at 917-705-0044.

Service… Impelled by the Spirit of Jesus, St. Anne’s strives to reach out to others. In works on behalf of justice, charity, and human

development, we seek to imitate Jesus in bringing glad tidings to the poor, liberty to the oppressed and captives, and healing to

the blind and the sick. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact Fr. Joe or Fr. Colin.

We are grateful to the 1,289 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $12,601.00 in the offertory, $2,336.00 through Online Giving offertory

which along with other fees and donations, totaled $18,425.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR

2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select the

Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
