Cross Worship Builds Community Why do we worship? There are many answers:
praise God; sing and pray; receive strength
through Word and Sacraments; hear scripture;
gather at the Lord’s Table.
However, there is also one other very
important reason why we worship:
Worship builds community.
When we worship together, we build
community together, and when we build
community together, we become stronger
together. When we are stronger together,
we serve better together. When we serve
better, together we share the good news
and meet the needs of our neighbors.
So how might we build stronger community together through worship? Well, how about if we
start by sitting closer together? Rather than spreading ourselves out all over the worship center,
imagine what the results would be if we sat up front next to one another:
1) Our singing would be better. Just like it really helps if a choir sits close together, those who
are timid will be more willing to sing.
2) Our spoken responses would be better. We hear each other speak the responses and our
prayerful responses will be resounding and unified.
3) Our greeting of peace will link us together more joyfully.
4) Our ushers will be able to take the offering in a more cohesive manner.
5) Our guests will witness that we are a community together and they will find that there is a
place for them.
6) It really helps our preaching. Preaching to a congregation spread all over the worship
center makes it hard to always visually include everyone.
Yes, worship builds community. In fact, liturgy literally means “work of the people.” So, why not take the first step in liturgy
by sitting up-front, and closer together? Come, together in worship and build community.

Taizé Worship / World Day of Prayer
Friday, March 6
Join us as our community unites for a “progressive day of prayer” with events planned
throughout the day at local churches. Attend as your schedule permits; each service
lasts 30-45 minutes. Our Savior’s will host a Taizé service at 12:45 PM. Rev. Peter Marty
will provide a keynote address at 6:15 PM at Christ Lutheran Church in Belvidere.
Additional information can be found at the Welcome Center and the OSLC website.

Sheets for April-June are
available at the Welcome
Center through March 15. If you
are not sure when you might be
gone, consider signing up for a
weekend when you know you
will be here. If a replacement is
needed when something
comes up, REPLY ALL makes this
easily accommodated.
Thank you for enthusiastically
embracing the new system
which has allowed for a
complete listing of volunteers
for the month to be included in

Exploring Prayer through the Labyrinth Walking the labyrinth can introduce us to another type of prayer –
prayer in motion.
The labyrinth will be laid out in The Bridge for Holy Week beginning
Palm Sunday. Begin your walk through Holy Week and experience
different prayer activities at various prayer stations around the
labyrinth. At the entrance of the labyrinth, information on walking it
will be available, along with scripture verses to ponder and use
along your walk.
• We walk the labyrinth in silence, respecting one another’s
private time in prayer.
• Each person reacts to the labyrinth differently. There is no one
way or right way to walk the labyrinth.
• Walking the labyrinth can be a valuable
experience for everyone in that it does
broaden our experience of prayer, giving us
all a new perspective on prayer: our
“communication with God.”
Enjoy the beauty of the space as the sun beams in through the
beautiful stained-glass windows, smell the scent of flowers and
lilies, and look to the light of the cross centered in this space.
May Hope, Peace & Love be with you along your journey.
Journey to the Resurrection
Thursdays during Lent at 2 pm.
On February 27, a six week Bible Study begins facilitated by Tom
Hartley called “JOURNEY TO THE RESURRECTION.” The jacket of the
study says: "This Bible study will renew your heart and mind. In each
session, you will encounter Jesus through a specific event in His life
and be invited to join in a related spiritual practice – all leading up to
the hope-filled promise of the resurrection. A journey like no other!"

network with others, and discover new ways to enhance
congregational and individual ministries. Held at

Playtown News
In February, we focused our attention on LOVE and
how to show kindness. We had a day when everyone
brought in someone they loved to read stories and do
a project together.
In our classroom, we have a dramatic play area that
we change about every six weeks. For our spring area,
we are thinking about having a flower shop! If you have
any pretend flowers, plastic flower pots or vases, house
plants or anything that would go well in a little “flower
shop,” we would love donations to make it extra fun for
the kids.
Our next Open House is scheduled for Thursday,
March 26 from 5-7 PM. Please help spread the word
to any young families looking for a quality preschool
program. We are happy to answer any questions
and/or set up tours.
Brent Stenberg Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established in memory of Brent Stenberg, who devoted his entire life to the pursuit of music. He played

2. High school youth planning to attend a Lutheran Summer Music Program
The scholarship is also available for members or friends of OSLC who have a deep passion to play the guitar and would like
to purchase one.

Becca’s Closet Needs Volunteers The Rockford Chapter of Becca’s Closet promotes self-confidence and
individual beauty by providing formal gowns and accessories to high school
teens.
OSLC’s Missions Cabinet, in partnership with Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries,
is recruiting 3-5 volunteers for two Saturdays, April 11 and 18, from 8:30-noon,
to welcome and assist clients and sort and rack dresses. Meet at Becca’s
Closet located at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1829 N. Rockton
Ave. Volunteers can sign up at the Welcome Desk, or email Lisa Doll at
[email protected]. If you have not experienced this mission, be assured
that it’s great fun to help the teens find a special dress for prom. Last year,
1,000 dresses were given away!
Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry
We are excited to work alongside Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry
(LPGM) again this year. On March 14th and 15th, we will welcome
Rev. Dan Ruth, executive director of LPGM, who will preach at all three
services and give a presentation during the education hour.
Many at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church feel a
personal connection to LPGM. Founders
Gordon and Betty Olson and their children,
Tim and Karna, were devoted OSLC
members before moving to Minnesota.
When Tim died tragically in Central African
Republic in 1991 while serving the ELCA, the entire congregation mourned
his death. Founded in 1995, LPGM was created to engage individuals and
communities in transformational partnerships across the globe. Over these
years, Our Savior’s has supported this mission with over $50,000 in
contributions and 30+ members who faithfully sponsor children in
boarding homes.
OUR VISION: LPGM envisions a world where relationships transform
boundaries and where all people have the resources and opportunities
they need to thive.
OUR MISSION: LPGM provides access to quality education for people at
the margins, especially women and girls. We work together with global
partners to listen, respond and bear witness to local needs and priorities.
HOW WE DO IT: LPGM focuses on four main ways to help those in need:
Partnerships, Education, Empowerment and Travel.
We invite you to visit their website: www.lutheranpartners.org. There you will
find many success stories which will inspire you to join us in supporting
Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry.
Eating for the Environment Many of us are trying to do what is
recommended to help stop global
warming – use energy-saving light bulbs,
take reusable bags to the store, recycle
paper and cardboard, and some of us
drive hybrid cars. All of these are prudent
and helpful measures to take, but John
Robbins, bestselling author of Diet for a
New America and The Food Revolution,
finds it phenomenal that environmental
experts are hesitant to say “eat less meat.”
Since livestock remains the primary
contributor of greenhouse gases, even
more than transportation, Robbins goes on
to say that eating more plants and fewer
animals is the most powerful and
documented meaningful action we can
take to help curb climate change, air and
water pollution, and land degradation. Go
green – eat less meat!
If interested in cutting back on meat in
your diet, there are many excellent
vegetarian and vegan cookbooks
available. Questions? Please email me at

Honduras Serve Trip
At this time, twelve church members and an individual from Trinity
Lutheran in Lisle will be traveling to Honduras this summer to serve in
Tegucigalpa. Looking ahead, we will continue to collect used

Our Savior’s will host the clients/musicians from the Rockford Rescue Mission's new performing arts
facility. This facility was built in July 2018 to bring joy to the lives of the Rescue Mission residents and
to give them a musical hobby to help them when they leave the Mission. Our program on the
25th will be conducted as an old-time radio show with Charmel Jacobs (now an employee of
RRM but formerly a local radio personality) as MC. The performers, clients of the Mission, will be
vocalists, guitarists, and drummers, sharing their talents and stories. The show is free. It will be
followed by a catered brunch for which reservations and pre-payment will be required. Everyone
is welcome. Watch the Welcome Center for more details.

ways we reach people outside of

To continue this growth and reach
new adults in our community, we’re
asking you to LIKE our posts as much
as possible. Even better, you can
