Dear Friends, I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. I’ve been watching the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, for the past couple of weeks. For those who don’t know the show, it’s the story of a high school teen who takes her own life. Before she did this, however, she made a bunch of tapes, filling thirteen sides, in which she described to her school mates, how they influenced her decision to end her life. Much has been made about 13 Reasons Why. It’s a difficult movie, to be sure. However, while the attention of the film is on the place of bullying and rumors on one group of students and their parents, a whole other population of young people is largely ignored. There is a dimension that I’d like to focus on, though It’s this: the characters in the film, both teenagers and parents, suffer from a rather shallow existence. They are depicted as being mirror images of one another. They understand themselves through both what the others think of them and their interactions in the course of the day. There is, of course, a basic psychological truth here, but there’s more to being human than our social selves. Hannah, the main protagonist, is highly susceptible to the jealousies and rumors of others and how they react to her reactions. But the same is true for her “friends,” her parents, the parents of her “friends,” and the school administrators. There are no inner values, inner life experiences, that could guide the characters through the social maze of their lives. As the series draws to a close, elements of a deeper dimension begin to break through. Clay, Hannah’s one true friend, reveals his anger over the terrible injustice of her experiences and his own unspoken deep love for her. Others, even Clay, begin to face their responsibilities in her tragic choice. But, it’s this overall emptiness in the lives of the main characters that I found disturbing. Jesus tells us in this week’s gospel “I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you...On that day, you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you.” It’s this spiritual dimension that is missing in 13 Reasons Why. This, for me, is the tragedy of the series: a vibrant young woman had so defined herself in terms of her social role of being a teenager that she never got to know her deeper self. That self could have given her the inner strength to face the terrible insensitivities of those around her. There was just no vehicle for these characters to explore that inner life and the Presence in their midst. This isn’t just true in the film. It’s true in many of our lives today. Being only spiritual, however, isn’t enough, I’m afraid. It’s just too easy to misread the genuine spiritual signals that come to us each day. The movie characters began to experience them but didn’t know what do about it. Real religion is the key for interpreting those signals. Its true purpose is to be the bridge between our outer lives and the inner life where, as Christ tells us, he dwells. Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

Hannah, the main protagonist, is highly susceptible to the jealousies and rumors of others and how

they react to her reactions. REFLECTION

Let Everything That Hath Breath Praise The Lord, by Christina Rossetti All that we see rejoices in the sunshine, All that we hear makes merry in the Spring: God grant us such a mind to be glad after our kind, And to sing His praises for everything. Much that we see must vanish with the sunshine, Sweet Spring must fail, and fail the choir of Spring: But Wisdom shall burn on when the lesser lights are gone, And shall sing God’s praises evermore for everything.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS 6th Sunday of Easter “For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be

God’s will, than for doing evil.” (1 Peter 3:17)

The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning, making sure things are progressing smoothly, then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended. An unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively. Why me? I did everything right! Here’s the thing – God has a different and better plan in store for you.

During May, Pope Francis asks us to pray especially ...that Christians in Africa, in imitation of the merciful Jesus, may give prophetic witness to reconciliation, justice, and peace.

A Word from Pope Francis: The common good is much more than the sum of

individual interests. It moves from “what is best

for me” to “what is best for everyone”. It

embraces everything which brings a people

together: common purpose, shared values, ideas

which help us to look beyond our limited

individual horizons. (7/8/15)

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we become ever

more truly the People of God. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council

SAINT ANNE SCHOOL NEWS

Here is the winning essay for this year's Anne Storozuk Memorial Scholarship awarded by our Rosary Society to Samantha Kedersha Our Spiritual Vessel

Who is it that we can look up to in times of need? Who can we rely on to guide us through a holy life? Although, we can look up to

God and Jesus, Mary is definitely capable of listening to our troubles when we pray. She also gives us advice in mysterious ways. If

you pay attention you may notice that Mary is always with us to guide us. She gives us little signs to tell us who is here, since she is our

spiritual mother she is always there for us when we need her. She lets us know that we are never alone and she is always ready to give

us some of her helpful advice.

As you might know a vessel is something that contains things, just like Mary. Mary listened or contained what God asked of her

when he needed her the most, even though she was scared and nervous she was brave enough to put her trust in God, despite what her

parents, friends, and neighbors would say or think. Mary also contained Jesus throughout his childhood until God needed him to

sacrifice himself. Mary also helped me when I prayed to her for help. She gave me hope and she made things easier for me to deal with

it and she gave me courage that everything would be fine.

The reason we pray to Mary for help is because we idolize her, and we want to be as brave and trusting as she was. Mary is also very

spiritual. She is brave, beautiful, trusting, and a great role model to all mothers. She is a great role model to boys, girls, and men, but

especially to mothers since she was the best mother of all.

One of the best traits of Mary is how brave she was. She had a child before she was married which back then was risking being killed

but she still did it for God.

Her husband died. She even had to watch her son die a slow and painful death, knowing that his life was in God’s hands. She was

chosen to be The Mother of God out of all women in the world. Mary is a wonderful woman and a faithful servant to God.

Overall, Mary listens to our prayers and she is a great role model for all mothers. She is brave and put all her trust in God. Out of all

women in the world God chose her to be the mother of Jesus, God, and everyone. Mary listens to us and is very unique. Mary is Our

Mystical Rose.

happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate

it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy

envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be

sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks.

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will

see a light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR 2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear.

Select the Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.” When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
