ANY PRODUCT SUPPLIED JUST-IN-TIME The first Belgian cooling and freezing houses appeared after the First and Second World War. Different companies still operat-ing today have their roots in those years.

PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION SINCE 1921

The Belgian Cold Storage Association (BV-BVK) has played a coordinating and stimula-ting role throughout all evolutions in the sector.

In 1935 the BVBVK grew out of the ‘Union Professionnelle Belge des Industries du Froid’, which was established in 1921.

The BVBVK concentrates its efforts on all com-panies who in the logistics sector offer control-led temperature storage, cooling or deep-free-zing activities and other related services to third parties.

Belgium has a total of some 53 specialised companies offering climatised storage services to third parties. Each company has its own strengths and its own accents in the field of extra ser-vices.

More than half of the companies are members of the Belgian Cold Storage Association.

Our members together possess more than 2.6 million m³ of storage capacity. In Belgium more than 8,000 employees are employed in the cooling and freezing sector.

THE BELGIAN COOLING AND FREEZING SECTOR IN FIGURES

Barias from Roeselare guarantees foreign food producers exporting to Europe a unique and complete service for the fl exible packaging, storage and delivery of their deep-frozen or refrigerated goods. “We deliver goods just-in-time to retailers or food services in the requi-red consumer packaging”, explains business manager Chris Mullie.

Barias is a solid concern off ering a high added value to importers and food producers. Chris Mullie: “We receive the goods in bulk by container or trailer and store them in the right conditioned environment fully in line with the most stringent standards. We specialise in potato products, bakery products, vegetables, meat and fi sh.”

FLEXIBLE PACKAGING

Barias automatically or manually packages these goods in the ap-propriate packaging depending on the requirements of the end customer. “Practically any type of packaging is possible”, explains Chris Mullie. “For retailer A a cardboard box in a blue colour and for retailer B the same product in a bag with a yellow colour? No problem at all! We possess a great diversity of packaging ma-chines. Both small and large volumes can be processed. Our cus-tomers place their orders themselves, or we receive them directly

from the retailers or the food services. Anything is possible. Th e customer never remains with unsold stock and peak periods are simply taken care of. We package tailor-made and just-in-time depending on the orders arriving.”

THE CUSTOMER DECIDES

Th e food producers or importers decide which of Barias’ services they wish to use. “We off er a full menu from which the customer is free to choose. We can design the packaging, have it manufactured and taken into stock, or the customer may provide the packaging himself. We can deliver the products or the customer may work with his own transporter. We can also provide the necessary sup-port for administrative management and any return shipments. Each customer works together with one and the same contact per-son at Barias for the full monitoring of his operations.”

With the Cold Store division, Luik Natie in Antwerp off ers all ne-cessary cooling and deep-freeze facilities for the storage and trans-fer of imported fresh products or the consolidation of fresh products for export. “In recent years we have grown to become the largest independent handler of refrigerated and deep-freeze containers in the port”, states general manager Stefaan Verhelst.

It is mainly perish-ables such as fruit, chocolate, dairy products, potatoes, and food-stuff s that are stored here. We have the same number of pallet spaces available in our deep-freeze zone. We store large quanti-ties of fi sh, meat and butter here.” Modern warehouse manage-ment puts the focus on the traceability of all goods. Luik Natie has also been awarded an ISO 22000 and Bio-certifi cate.

OPTIONAL SERVICESLuik Natie makes the diff erence with a number of optional extra services. “In real terms we mean packaging and labelling, ship-ping, customs formalities, fi scal representation, automatic con-trol, an in-house border inspection point for sanitary controls by the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain, a quaran-tine deep-freeze unit and internal port transport. Th e customer says what he wants, we do what is necessary.”

CO-PACKING FOR FROZEN FOOD

Sivafrost packs and repacks products on two fully automatic and two semi-automatic packing lines. On our fully automatic lines we work with packages between 50g and 5 kg in the stan-dard bags as found in the shop. Our range also includes upright bags with or without zip closure. Our lines give us the capacity to pack almost 200 tonnes a day. Combinations of automatic and manual packaging are also among the options.

In addition to the effi cient AirStop technology already used for diff erent applications for some time, Masterveil developed Power-stream as a revolutionary system to stop energy losses from open deep-freezers. “Here we off er a much more energy effi cient alter-native in comparison with traditional air curtain technology”, says business manager Peter Deweerdt.

Th e AirStop from Masterveil keeps the conditions in two spac-es separate with an ‘invisible door’. “Here we refer to gases, odours, temperatures and moisture - so much more than just the temperature. Powerstream takes matters another step for-ward for freezers. Much energy is lost each time the door is opened to drive goods in or out.”

Traditional air curtains are limited to, simply put, ‘heating’ or ‘cooling’ the problem. “Our Powerstream invention – devel-oped in cooperation with Ghent University - reduces air cur-tain energy consumption by up to factor ten. Th is represents gigantic savings”, adds Peter Deweerdt.

SOONER INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROJECT

While in the past Masterveil was mainly asked to apply the sys-tem to cold stores and freezer rooms, engineering offi ces are now looking to the technology at a much earlier stage. “Engi-neering offi ces are already calling upon us for construction or conversion projects at an early stage in their projects, some-thing that is an extremely positive evolution. We are also see-ing interest in our revolutionary system from abroad growing strongly.”

With large areas of cooling and freezer space in Bavikhove (West Flanders) and at the Port of Ghent, Mipa Frost is an attractive ga-teway for importers of deep-frozen or fresh products. “Th e products go straight from the ship into our freezers or cold stores, ready for further transport to wherever the customer wishes”, says founder and business manager Pascal Braecke.

Mipa Frost grew out of Braecke Trading, a company trading in potatoes and other vegetables. Pasca Braecke explains more: “We have 4,000 pallet spaces in Bavikhove, while in the port at Ghent we have a further 75,000 m³ of storage space available. We have both deep-freeze and refrigerated zones at temperatures of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. In the port at Ghent we are also excellently equipped for the loading and unloading of reefer containers. When required we also assist our customers with customs for-malities and any necessary prior and further transport.”

HIGH INVESTMENTS

In 2015 Mipa Frost will be investing heavily in an automated warehouse management system with remote stock monitoring. “We mainly store fresh vegetables, butter products, deep-frozen fries, potato products and deep-frozen meat. Besides potato and other vegetables producers in Belgium, we are also strongly tar-geting import companies.”
