Once the totalitarian government of Japan, Italy, and Germany, secured control of their nations , they began to look toward controlling other nations
Japanese Expansion
1931 – Japan seized Manchuria
province in Northern China.
1937 – Expanded control over China’s railroads and major coastal cities.
Japanese soldiers acted with extreme brutality in China’s then capital of Nanking.
Murdered and raped many city residents.

ItalianExpansion 1935– Italy invaded Ethiopia
Ethiopia appealed to League of Nations for help.

1938 : German troops moved into Austria to unite Germany.

Munich Pact1938 – Hitler announced intention to annex the Sudetenland

To avoid war, a conference convened to determine Sudetenland’s fate
Munich Pact – agreement between Germany, France, and Britain to give the Sudetenland to Hitler in exchange for peace.

Neville Chamberlin, British Prime Minister, announced the agreement secured “Peace for our time”
Peace was short lived, WWII started 11 months later.

Germany and the USSR pledged not to attack one another.
Secretly, agreed to invade and divide up Poland.
Germany’s eastern boarder secure from a Soviet attack.

Start of WWIISeptember 1, 1939Germany invades Poland; Hitler was not going to stop expansion.
Britain and France respond by declaring war on Germany.

Using blitzkrieg –lightening war- Germany quickly defeated Poland.
Emphasized speed and firepower by using advance communication to coordinate attacks using planes and tanks, followed by infantry.
Next Germany turned west – towards France.
France Falls
May 1940, Germany invaded Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg – quickly defeated them.
