The Axis Powers consisted of Germany, Nippon (Japan), and Italy The Battle of Britain

Hitler’s main goal was to break the British morale before invading them so that they wouldn’t put up much a fight as well as dominating all of Western Europe

In August 1940, the Germans bombed London and British shipyards, industries, and neighborhoods, as a result many civilians were killed

The Battled of Britain continued into October of 1940 with the Germans failed attempt to invade and conquer Britain; the Germans never took control of Britain because the British Royal Air Force mounted a heroic defense against German bombers and fighters

Signing the Atlantic Charter In August 1941, President Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Churchill drew up the

Atlantic Charter The charter pledged that the people of every nation would be free to choose their own

form of government and live free of “fear and want” It urged disarmament and the creation of a “permanent system of government security”

Attack on Pearl Harbor On December 7, 1941 the American military base of Pearl Harbor was attacked by

Japanese warplanes The attack destroyed many battleships, cruisers, and other vessels Pearl Harbor was and still is the worst defeat in United States military history

Page 5: World War 2

Blitzkrieg: name given to the sudden, violent offensive attacks the Germans used during World War II

Lend-lease: the act passing during World War II allowing the United States to sell, lend or lease arms or other war supplies to any nation considered “vital to the defense of the United States”

Disarmament: removal of weapons

I do believe that the United States would have entered because the Germans would have gotten over ambitious and would have attempted to invade us. Or that the Allies would have once again called for our help in sending in supplies and troops to help them against Hitler the Cruel.

Americans on the war front helped the war effort by: Planting “Victory Gardens” to grow vegetables, which

were in short supply Children collected scrap metal for use in the industry They also promoted patriotism and helped keep other

Americans united behind the war effort

Mobilization- military and civilian preparations for war Ration- to give out scarce items on a limited basis Internment camp- the detention camps where Japanese

Americans were moved to and confined during world war ii

Significance of: D-day: Once the Allies controlled the French

coast, they would create a base which would try to sweep the Germans out of France. The success of D-Day marked a major turning point in the war in Europe.

V-E Day: It marked the down fall of the German Empire as well as the end of the War in Europe. It stands for “Victory in Europe”, it also marked the liberation of the Jews and the end of the Nazis.

The Importance of: Island Hopping- This strategy called for

capturing key islands in which the Allies could make bases, both naval and air, to attack other key islands in order to reach the mainland of Japan.

Manhattan Project- A top secret operation in which thousands of scientist worked to create nuclear bombs. In the end they succeeded in creating the first atomic bomb.

V-J Day- It marked the Japanese defeat and the end of World War ii.

Kamikazes were suicidal attempts by losing Japanese pilots who faced defeat. The pilots crashed into enemy ships, causing a total of 57 American ships to be sunk. It showed how desperate Japan really was. Kamikaze means “Divine Wind”

As president of the United States, I would have dropped the two bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because I would be in the middle of a war against them. In war, one can have no mercy to win, and to win one must use anything possible.
