“We were able to see first-hand

the many product highlights, which

underscore the perfection,

aesthetics and passion of the Setra brand.”

Dear customers and friends of the Setra brand,

I am delighted to have this opportunity to greet you for the first time here as Head of Marketing, Sales and Aftersales Daimler Buses. In the relatively short time since my joining the bus side of the business, I have been able to get to know many of you personally, to enjoy several interesting conversations and, along the way, I have been warmly welcomed into the large “Setra family”.A tremendous highlight in October was the Busworld exhibition in Kortrijk. I was very impressed with the show which very effectively integrated all aspects of the bus business. We were able to see first-hand the many product highlights, which underscore the perfection, aesthetics and passion of the Setra brand. In our conversations with you, it became clear that not only our product but also our collective collaboration is remarkable. This is clearly reflected in the extremely positive development of the Setra brand in 2015. Many thanks to all of you for being part of this success.A topic of increasing importance and relevance is currently the subject of long- distance buses. This is a market with great potential for operators, but also one that brings many challenges along with it. We support the individual business models in our different markets with our tailored OMNIplus service packages.Another topic highlighted in this issue is the redesigned Setra CustomerCenter in Neu-Ulm. The CustomerCenter in itself has always been a highlight. And now, with its new, state-of-the-art and highly distinctive look and feel, we hope to bring you even closer to the Setra brand experience. This may be just one more reason for you to visit us again in Neu-Ulm.If we don’t see each other again this year in person, I wish you a very successful year-end and hope you enjoy the latest issue of SetraWorld.

Best personal regards,

Ulrich BastertHead of Marketing, Sales and AftersalesDaimler Buses

What does the high-quality interior design of museums, libraries and yachts have in common with the interior of a Setra coach? How is a Setra given the passenger compart-ment fittings to suit its very individual application? And how are different customer requirements and wishes brought to life? The topic of interior design is our focus in this issue of SetraWorld. You’ll find out how creativity and exceptional standards of excellence, combined with high-quality materials and craftsmanship, lead to beautifully customised solutions.

The “Ride and Drive” test drive programmeThe new MultiClass S 418 LE business can also be made available to you as part of the test drive programme. Test its great handling and surprising manoeuvrability in practice on a typical overland route. Your sales representative or distributor will be happy to let you know when a test drive will be possible.

models followed – low-entry vehicles with a low-floor front section and high-floor rear. Now comes the logical extension in the low-entry segment with the three-axle Low Entry S 418 LE business. The new member of the family comes directly from the modular Setra MultiClass and the result is a full-fledged 14.6-metre-long solo bus with very special characteristics – most of which have to do with space. With full seating including swing seats at the middle door, the overland bus offers an impressive 63 seats. If you include standing room, and depending on equipment, with registration as an overland Class 2 bus, as many as 100 passengers can be carried.

In the rear module of the S 418 LE, you’ll find the easily accessible, well known and very cost-effective drive train from the three-axle MultiClass UL. The six-cylinder, in-line Mercedes-Benz OM 470 engine with 10.7 litre displacement is ready to perform with 265 kW (360 hp) or 290 kW (394 hp), and 1700 or 1900 Nm of torque. You can select the transmission that best suits your needs: as an alternative to the standard-equipment six-speed manual transmission, there is a fully automated eight-speed GO 250-8 PowerShift trans- mission and converter for automatic transmission from Voith and ZF.The driver takes a seat at the front left of the bus in the proven MultiClass cockpit. It is 860 millimetres above the road, enabling the driver and passengers to meet eye to eye. One of the surprises this long overland bus keeps up its sleeve is its manageability. Thanks to its high-quality, electro-hydraulically steered trailing axle, the vehicle’s turning circle is only 23.5 metres – making it even more agile than the shorter two-axle S 416 LE. This all contributes to making the new S 418 LE business an exceptionally hard-working practitioner for high-traffic overland lines.

The three-axle vehicle’s flexibility is very typical of Setra: a wide, single or double-leaf door 2, a single or double special-use area with space for either a wheelchair or pram right opposite, alternatively or additionally, a special-use area in front of door 2, an demountable platform – this long Setra meets all requirements. The Transit or Route seats are available in different versions, and on request, luggage racks, double glazing and air conditioning are available as well. Like all overland buses from the large MultiClass family, the S 418 LE business can either be primarily functional or comfortable. All new in the offering is the slim front door with a width of 900 millimetres instead of 1150 millimetres. The entry is somewhat narrower, but the door swings out less. This represents a real plus for applications where passengers crowd at the door, as often experienced when carrying school children. Or for regions where a swinging door could come into contact with obstacles such as snowdrifts. One thing is always guaranteed: with 295/70 tires, the entrance is only 345 millimetres at the front, and in the middle only 385 milli- metres above the road surface, i.e. at low-floor level. On request, the Setra can even further accommodate its passengers by kneeling another 70 millimetres. With the optional folding ramp at door 2, barrier-free accessibility becomes a reality – a typical requirement in tenders.Inside the vehicle, passengers benefit from a well organised and spacious passenger compartment with pedestal seating and lots of headroom. Those who want to enjoy the view or the drive comfort of the touring coach rear axles can opt for a seat at the rear.

The ‘seating giant’ in the low-entry segmentSetra is further expanding its MultiClass offering. The three-axle S 418 LE business is 14.6 metres

long and enables many different seating configurations with up to 63 seats.

A world premiere – the S 418 LE business

O verland lines with very high utilisation, school transportation and works transportion – in some applications, every single

seat counts. If a high number of seats needs to be combined with barrier-free accessibility and maximum cost-effectiveness, it’s time for the new overland giant – the Setra S 418 LE business – to kick into action. Behind the new three-axle’s friendly Setra face, you’ll find more than just a few notable benefits and outstanding driving comfort with a high-floor rear and independent front suspension.Flashback: in the autumn of 2013, Setra expanded the MultiClass with the UL business models – functional two-axle overland buses for the price-sensitive tendering business. Composition – leather meets high-techA discreet fragrance, a feel-good surface and a refined appearance: can the qualities of leather as seat covers in high-end coaches be even further improved on? The answer is called Composition, a new refined and natural leather alternative. The material is made of natural leather fibres, which are applied to a modern substrate. With its slight gloss, fine texture and typical leather scent, even experts are hard pressed to distinguish Composition from classic leather. With regards to a few practical characteristics, Composition even surpasses natural leather, since it was specially developed for use in demanding transportation environments. Composition is extremely durable, abrasion-resistant and it has a consistently high quality. Above all, in contrast to leather, it doesn’t need to be actively cared for to prevent signs of aging over long-term use.

At Setra, Composition cover material will be replacing the conventional leather used for seat headrests, seating and side surfaces as an optional extra. There are also aesthetic advantages, since large areas, such as the underside of luggage racks or side walls, can now be purchased without seams. Yet another benefit can be felt on the scale: compared with leather seating, the innovative material can actually save up to 50 kg of weight per vehicle.

Comfort headrests – for travel that is even more comfortableThe name says it all: Comfort headrests now increase the comfort of Setra seats, as an option. The new saddle headrests overlap the backrest – hence their name – and can be adjusted continuously by up to 85 millimetres. In their retracted state, they increase the height of the backrest by 40 millimetres. Even the tallest passengers will therefore find a comfortable seating position. The journey is transformed into pure pleasure when passengers fold the ears of the Comfort headrests by up to 90 degrees forward, to give the head safe lateral support. The developers have even made sure that passengers who wear glasses are comfortable. And, thanks to the headrests’ maximum width of 260 millimetres, rear passenger visibility is affected only minimally. The new Comfort headrests are optionally available for Voyage Plus and Voyage Ambassador seats in the Setra TopClass 500 and Setra ComfortClass 500 ranges, as well as in the S 431 DT double-decker. They are also available for 2+1 seating and in combination with three-point seat belts.

More seats optimise the passenger compartment There is even more good news for your business: in almost all Setra touring coaches with the usual four-star classification and Voyage

Plus seating, an additional double seat is now standard on board. The reason behind this development is seat optimisation. With unchanged upholstery padding, a new seat base reduces the thickness of the seat back by ten down to 40 millimetres – a measure required by the Association for Coach Comfort Quality (Gütegemeinschaft Buskomfort) for four-star classification. The backrest’s padding and feeling of luxuriously ‘sinking in’ are identical. Passengers do not notice any difference, since the usual high level of seating comfort remains unchanged.Developers adapted the positioning of the seats, allowing an additional double-seat on the side of the vehicle opposite the door in almost all touring coaches with four-star seating. So, for example, in the future, a Setra S 515 HD with four-star amenities will have 46 passenger seats, an S 516 HDH, 52 seats and an S 431 DT double-decker, as many as 80 seats. Only in the case of the S 515 MD are additional seats not possible due to the height offset in the area of the engine.

B runner Ferienreisen is enlarging its travel offering with sophis- ticated holiday and cultural tours. This is why the company

from Sargans in Switzerland has expanded its fleet by two TopClass S 515 HDH coaches. Last year, they took delivery of an S 516 HDH vehicle from the new Setra touring coach generation.“With the TopClass 500 and its top-of-the-line features, we can clearly differentiate ourselves from our competitors,” explains Peter Brunner, referring to the company’s investment in the new coaches. Both new vehicles each feature the significantly enlarged TopSky Panorama glass roof and 46 Voyage Ambassador seats with middle armrests and footrests. Other highlights include the panoramic cameras which transmit the view from the cockpit for passengers onto the three folding monitors in the centre aisle. Digital TV reception, reading lamps, hostess call buttons and a Lavazza coffee machine ensure even more enhanced travel comfort.Of course, the two S 515 HDH coaches are equipped with the latest assistance systems from Mercedes-Benz. For instance, the Predictive Powertrain Control feature, the world’s first automatic speed control with integrated transmission intervention, decreases fuel consumption by up to five percent. “This significantly increases the cost-effective- ness of the TopClass 500 on long-distance trips,” says Peter Brunner.

T he first two ComfortClass S 511 HD club coaches in

France have been on the road for Autocars Borini from Megève since March. With its length of 10.46 metres, the S 511 HD is especially agile on the Savoy Alps’ mountain roads – a decisive criterion for the operator. As a long-standing Setra customer, Autocars Borini already

had an S 309 HD and two S 411 HD vehicles in use and is now turning to the latest generation of Setra club coaches. “The compact coaches are perfect for smaller groups for whom comfort is a priority,” says Romain Borini, who runs the

family business with his father Philippe and his brother Sébastien. To meet the high standards of these passengers, the coach is equipped with 26 Voyage seats and a club corner in the rear. For trips in alpine areas, the highest safety standards for passengers and drivers are a priority for Autocars Borini. Therefore, the S 511 HD is equipped with Lane Assistant, Adaptive Cruise Control and Brake Assist – as are all the coaches in their fleet. “When five or six of the company’s vehicles are on the road in the mountains at night, you sleep better as an operator with the latest driver assistance systems on board,” explains Romain Borini.

Ideal for exclusive travel concepts

Perfect for challenging alpine roads L ast May, Jonker Travel was the first company in the Netherlands to take over a TopClass 500 coach. The travel company from Katwijk in South Holland

specialises in carrying VIPs, such as high-ranking representatives from business and politics, as well as in business trips for companies within Holland and neigh- bouring countries. With its black and gold design and tinted side windows, the S 516 HDH embodies excellence, style and class. The coach also pampers passengers with its excep- tionally exclusive interior amenities. With its 2+1 seating, it offers plenty of room for 27 discerning passengers. The comfortable Setra Ambassador leather seats are arranged in five groups around tables. At the rear, there is also a club corner with a table. A very special eye-catcher is the

indirect LED lighting mounted under the seats which makes for a warm and fascinating ambience in the passenger compartment on evening tours. The TopSky panoramic glass roof offers beautiful views into the skies. Thanks to a microwave, coffee maker and refrigerator in the galley, passengers can look forward to being taken care of with snacks and refreshments. USB charging stations at every seat, WLAN and three large 19-inch monitors with TV reception are also part of the package. Jonker Travel owners, Dick and Suzan Jonker, are delight- ed with the TopClass 500: “With its many amenities, the S 516 HDH is ideally suited to VIP applications,” says Managing Director Dick Jonker Bergwijn. The company is therefore deploying its new flagship as a VIP coach in Europe.

seating for six passengers at the rear of the vehicle. The ergonomically shaped Setra Ambassador seats, with close to 90 centimetres of leg room, offer superb seating comfort for 36 passengers. The reclining seats also feature an 8-channel headphone system and each row of seats has a 230-volt outlet. Coolers, a sausage cooker, a coffee machine, two 19-inch monitors, DVD players and TV reception ensure additional travel comfort. The coach is equipped with the latest safety equipment including, for example, Lane Assist, Front Collision Guard (FCG), ESP®, ABS and Brake Assist (BAS). “An ideal coach for groups of up to 36 people, it transforms any trip into a very special experience,” says tour operator Tieber.

T he Tieber Busreisen company from Judenburg in Styria offers its customers a wide spectrum of city, recreational and themed

trips. A very unique travel experience was on the programme in April this year. Selected guests were invited to the Setra CustomerCenter in Neu-Ulm for the handover of a very exclusive ComfortClass coach. After a tour of the plant and a festive champagne reception, CEO Peter Tieber unveiled the new, blue S 515 HD with the striking Tieber logo. In a subsequent test drive, everyone had an opportunity to experience the new ComfortClass 500’s benefits and advantages live. “With its high-quality equipment and amenities, the 515 HD coach is most definitely one of the top coaches in our fleet as a VIP and lounge coach,” said Peter Tieber. The coach’s special features include the redesigned club corner with

I t’s a big anniversary for a really big coach. In May 2015, the 2,500th Setra double-decker left the plant in Neu-Ulm. The

impressive figure speaks for the success of this very special concept, which Setra presented for the first time in 1981 with the S 228 DT. The anniversary vehicle is also the 250th S 431 DT coach with a Euro VI engine. The proud owner is the Autolinee Marino Italian operator from Altamura in the province of Bari.Company owner Gerardo Marino and his wife Loredana Caggiano personally took over their new coach during a festive event at the Setra CustomerCenter in Neu-Ulm. EvoBus Italia’s sales director Riccardo Cornetto and sales representative Michele Scarzano came to Neu-Ulm specially for the event. Following a short presentation of the travel company’s history, Gerardo Marino unveiled the S 431 DT. “We are very proud that the 2,500th vehicle from this successful Setra model is coming to Autolinee Marino,” said Gerardo Marino. The company, which was founded in 1957, has been deploying Setra vehicles since 1982 and currently has 110 vehicles from the Setra brand in its fleet, including several double-decker coaches. Autolinee Marino runs mostly long-distance coach lines within Italy and in neighbouring European countries. The spacious and cost-effective S 431 DT is ideally conceived for these routes. The anniversary coach, which is equipped with 80 Setra Voyage Plus seats and two club tables, is one of five new Setra double-deckers in Autolinee Marino’s fleet.

L ong-distance bus lines really aren’t anything new. For decades, cross-border bus lines have been connecting Europe’s cities. And in many countries such as Spain,

Sweden and Turkey, long-distance buses have been an intrinsic facet of public transport, just like aircraft or trains. The situation is quite different however in Germany. Since 2013, when bus services were approved for distances longer than 50 kilometres, the long-distance bus market has developed tremendous momentum. As part of the liberalisation of passenger transport, many different providers and business models have emerged with attractive offers and a variety of new lines.Setra has been strategically proactive in the face of this increased demand for buses and coaches for long-distance applications. And the S 431 DT double-decker, with its high seating capacity for 80 passengers, is a very sought-after model. Like the four-star

version presented at the Busworld show in Kortrijk, it ideally meets all the requirements for long-distance line applications – with two club tables on the lower deck, a galley, a heated WC cabin and a larger waste-holding tank. And, with two possible wheelchair spaces, the S 431 DT already complies with the Passenger Transport Act (PBefG) provision for new vehicles in long-distance scheduled services which will come into force in 2016.

Liberalisation in FranceAlong with Germany, other European countries are beginning to liberalise the long-distance line market. For instance, in France, long-distance bus lines with distances of over 100 kilometres between stops have been permitted since a change in the regulation in early August. Young German providers such as MeinFernbus/FlixBus plan to enter the French market in the future, as do the

French rail subsidiary OUIBUS (formerly IDBUS) or the Transdev public transport group, with its youngest subsidiary Isilines for national routes, is capitalising on Euroline’s experience with its current connection in close to 34 countries. Under the Starshipper brand, a number of private operators from all over France have teamed up in a type of cooperative partnership to establish their own common long-distance scheduled service offering. Additionally, Megabus, an English operator, is active in the French market with several lines. The structures of the various long-distance line providers are extremely diverse, as are their business models. While both OUIBUS and Transdev in France operate their own fleet and work with subcontractors, just like the IC Bus German railway subsidiary and BerlinLinienBus,

MeinFernbus/Flixbus operates using a partner model. The German provider with the green buses doesn’t actually have its own fleet. Rather, it works with regional bus operators as franchisees who take on both the risks and successes of the lines being run. Using this approach, MeinFernbus/FlixBus anticipates a better quality of service and enhanced regional customer relationships. As franchise partners, bus operators need to meet certain minimum requirements, for example in terms of their vehicles’ equipment. On different routes, passengers travelling with MeinFernbus/FlixBus should enjoy uniform levels of comfort and service. The specifications for all coaches call for four-star seating with a seat pitch of at least 74 centimetres, wireless Internet, 220-volt outlets

The structures of the vari-ous long- distance line pro-

It all comes down to the equipment

and USB charging sockets in the seat rows, among other amenities. The Setra ComfortClass S 516 HD/2 models, the 14-metre S 517 HD coach as well as the S 431 DT double-decker are especially popular among the MeinFernbus/FlixBus partners. With a high degree of safety and comfort features as standard and – in the case of the double-decker – unsurpassed passenger capacity, Setra coaches are not only proving themselves as highly attractive long-distance buses, but also as extremely cost-effective vehicles.

A three-class offering in SpainThe equipment profile for long-distance buses in Spain is less homogeneous, but certainly no less attractive. Long-distance bus lines there operate in a public contract framework with state-regulated prices. And for decades, they have represented the most important link between the sometimes geographically widespread cities and regions of the Iberian Peninsula. Long-distance line operators require a state concession in Spain. The minimum requirements defined by the regulatory authority for long-distance buses include, over and above air conditioning, WCs, seat belts, ABS, ESP®, retarders and a minimum luggage compartment size of twelve cubic metres, the possibility to transport passengers with reduced mobility with and without a wheelchair. Many providers such as market leader Alsa offer their customers far more amenities than the prescribed standard. More comfort enables charging higher fares, which results in higher margins in the long-distance line business. On many long- distance buses in Spain, there are offerings targeted to different user groups – from inexpensive and simple, to exclusive with more space between seats, to premium with 2+1 seating, a monitor at every seat and passenger service with catering on board.Spanish long-distance line operators, however, have to live with a considerable restriction in their choice of vehicles. In spite of their large seating capacity and barrier-free accessibility in the lower deck, double-deckers are not permitted for use on Spanish long-distance

lines. Consequently, 15-metre coaches such as the Setra S 519 HD, or its predecessor the S 419 GT-HD, are the most popular models in the market. Depending on the service class, they can be equipped with a maximum of 65 seats. This figure may vary depending on the customer‘s order. In the case of 2+1 seating, these models can be equipped with as few as 41 seats. Setra is pleased to fulfil additional equipment requirements, such as leather upholstery, a rear WC and rear galley, Adaptive Cruise Control (ART) along with Active Brake Assist 3 (ABA 3) or PPC, the predictive powertrain control feature for exceptionally efficient driving.

The Expressbus tradition in ScandinaviaLong-distance line buses not only have a long tradition in Southern Europe, but also in the far North. Long distances and a limited rail network have contributed to making the bus an ideal means of transportation for long distances in Sweden and Norway, and also to destinations between traffic hubs outside the larger cities. In recent years, however, long-distance buses have faced increased competition from low-cost domestic flights. Whereas vehicles with basic equipment and amenities usually run under government con- tract on subsidised long-distance routes, privately owned long- distance operators have been attracting especially the younger generation on board its long-distance buses with more space between seats, wireless Internet and multimedia features.Nettbuss, a subsidiary of the NSB Norwegian railway with over 3,300 buses in its fleet, ranks among the largest long-distance line opera-tors in Sweden and Norway. In addition to long-distance lines under the Nettbuss Express brand, which operates vehicles with standard equipment, the company recently introduced premium lines under the Bus4You brand. “For the most part, this concept distinguishes itself through our vehicles’ equipment. Our fleet includes several Setra S 431 DT coaches, which are fitted with seats in a 2+1 configuration, ample space between seats, wireless Internet and power outlets at every seat. As well, our passengers reach their destinations more quickly since Bus4You connections have fewer stops than ordinary long-distance buses,” commented Mats Johansson, CEO of Nettbuss Express AB.These very diverse examples from Europe clearly illustrate that long-distance line buses are far from being something new. However, they appear to be reinventing themselves all across Europe. And Setra has been actively supporting many of the new long-distance bus service offerings – with its ever-expanding range of passenger- oriented equipment, amenities and customisation, as well as an un- rivaled, wide range of models within the Daimler Buses organisation.

Redesign of the Setra CustomerCenter

The Setra CustomerCenter in Neu-Ulm has

had a fresh new look since early November.

Here, SetraWorld highlights the most

important innovations.

In the welcome area, the reception counter has taken on a more central position, so that visitors can be provided with assistance the moment they enter the CustomerCenter.

In the waiting area, there are display posts with information on the MultiClass, ComfortClass and TopClass ranges, as well as on the spectrum of services offered by OMNIplus. A comprehensive selection of brochures is also available.

The Setra Lounge in the CustomerCenter is a special area dedicated to comfort and well-being. A meeting place created to enable visitors to casually interact with each other. An extensive selection of snacks and refreshments is also available at the Setra Lounge.

S ince its opening in 2007, the CustomerCenter, with its 3,800 square metres of space, is the central point of contact for

customers and friends of the Setra brand. Whether to visit Neu-Ulm to configure a new vehicle, pick up a new coach or simply tour the plant, there is always an opportunity to take a look into the heart of the brand and interact with the people behind Setra.

Experiencing the Setra brandFrom extensive consultations at the DesignCenter, through to festive coach deliveries in a large group – a visit to the Setra CustomerCenter is also an event filled with emotion. And it is with this in mind that we approach equipping and fitting the Setra “living rooms on wheels”. For the redesign project, we took in many suggestions from our employees, our customers, drivers and tour groups. Welcome to the new Setra CustomerCenterSince November of this year, you have the reception counter directly in view as you enter the CustomerCenter. This provides visitors with clear orientation, no matter what the reason for their visit. To the right of the entrance, an information and waiting area was created where visitors will find all the information they need about the current Setra product range. Coach models present the individual vehicle classes, the vehicle types are beautifully illustrated and you will also find our comprehensive collection of our brochures.Directly adjacent to this area is our so-called history wall. On a much larger space than in the past, this is where we present the heritage and history of our brand.A few steps further into the CustomerCenter, you’ll find the Setra Lounge, our guest and relaxation area. Compared to the previous SetraCafé, this area is now much more sheltered and quiet, making it more ideally suited to one-to-one conversations, or simply to relax while you wait for the next step of your vehicle delivery. Here you can also immortalise the big day with your new Setra with a photo session. At the new catering bar, you can enjoy refreshments and snacks. From the Setra Lounge, you can then take a first look into the delivery hall, where individual historical exhibits and the vehicles prepared for delivery await the visitors. For many guests, this is also where the excitement builds just prior the first encounter with their new coach. If you would like to take a look into the new heart of the Setra brand, we look forward to your visit. Your sales consultants will gladly arrange an appointment for you at the CustomerCenter.

A pioneering spirit to meet the most discerning standardsAttention to detail, perfection and aesthetics have a long tradition at both Setra and the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau. And in both cases, this is based on a more than 100-year history and the pioneering spirit of two young entrepreneurs: Karl Schmidt from the Deutsche Werkstätten and Karl Kässbohrer, founder of the Kässbohrer Fahrzeug- werke, who developed the Setra in the fifties. Two visionaries who, at the age of 25, founded their own companies, leading them to success with creativity, ingenuity and exceptionally high standards of quality, workmanship and design.Instead of building simple mass furniture, Karl Schmidt chose to commit to tasteful craftsmanship from the outset. This was reflected in the concept for the company name. The company owner called the furniture factory he founded in 1898 the “Dresdener Werkstätten für Handwerkskunst” or the “Dresden Workshops for Craftsmanship”. Around the same time, Karl Kässbohrer opened his business in Ulm, which became known as the “Erste Ulmer Karosseriefabrik Karl Kässbohrer” or the “First Karl Kässbohrer Ulm Coachwork Factory”. In 1899, he presented his first horse-driven coach, which provided space for 18 passengers and was drawn by four horses.Shaping furniture design with highly individualised style. With this premise in mind, Karl Schmidt worked with different artists right from the beginning, including renowned architects such as Richard Riemerschmid from Munich. Over the years, a unique understanding of quality and aesthetics led the way from exclusively handcrafted furniture to artistically designed industrial products. The company

grew and changed its name to “Deutsche Werkstätten” a few years after its foundation. The parallels with Karl Kässbohrer are quite amazing. To stand out from the competition, the young wagon master also committed to high standards of quality right from the beginning. Just a few years after having founded the company, he built the first motorised multipurpose vehicle, which was deployed during the week as a commercial vehicle and on Sundays as a coach for excursions. In February 1910, the entrepreneur was given the patent for the construction of this multipurpose coach.Under the leadership of sons Karl and Otto Kässbohrer, the company evolved into one of Germany’s leading manufacturers of high-quality coaches and buses – not least through the Setra brand, which was launched in 1951. The Setra S 8 was the first self-supporting coach in Germany. For the first time ever, a coach was no longer a technical merging of a chassis and body, but an integrated structure. Even its streamlined exterior design was revolutionary and marked the beginning of a successful brand which to this day stands for a strong spirit of innovation and customised solutions.

Standing out from the crowdSince the former state-owned operation was reprivatised in 1992, the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau has mastered several hurdles and, again and again, has set new standards in customisation and quality. Fritz Straub sums it up quite well: “The Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau wants to make a dent in the growing universe of qualitative mediocrity.”

In other words: “The Sign of Excellence” – the Setra coach and bus brand ideally combines its passion for design and perfection in its brand slogan. Of course, every coach begins its life as a production vehicle – even if it does stand out with advanced technology and high-level functionality. But only the customised use of materials, paints, designs, shapes and colours transform a coach into a Setra. The result is quality that stands out from the crowd. Quality that meets high customer expectations – and transfers the legacy of Karl Schmidt and Karl Kässbohrer into the 21st century.

T he request from the London architect was an unusual one, even for experienced interior design experts: could they build a library from solid wood – based on the original style

of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí? Fritz Straub, owner of the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau, was happy to take on the challenge. A first draft immediately met with enthusiasm. The concept was then carried out with three-dimensional wood surfaces of oiled oak with distinctive curved lines, skilfully combined with glass elements as well as straight and curved shelves made of oiled wenge and steel.Bringing to life unusual designs is the speciality of the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau in Dresden. All the furnishings and room fittings they create are absolutely unique and customised to their client’s specific wishes. “We build individuality,” says Fritz Straub. This not only applies to their interior design, but also to the materials they use. Wood is coated with aluminium skin, cabinet doors are clad with parchment and benches veneered with algae.Fulfiling unusual customer requests is also an integral aspect of what Setra does best. The brand puts this into practice with a dedicated team at its DesignCenter as well as a separate department for special customer requests. Every operator receives exactly the solution it needs and ideally targeted to its specific business model. Backed by several decades of extensive brand expertise, a touring coach, for example, is transformed into a highly individualised lounge on wheels, which ensures a very special feeling of well-being and comfort thanks to club recliners and atmospheric interior lighting. Or, into a coach combining culinary highlights with fascinating travel experiences as a mobile gourmet bistro.

Setra visits the Deutsche Werkstätten HellerauUnder the “60 Years of Compact Coaches” motto, the anniversary of the popular compact coach was celebrated with the presentation of the latest generation. The press trip with journalists to Dresden in Saxony was enjoyed in the current S 511 HD model. The city on the Elbe River embodies a combination of history and modernity, which becomes quite obvious in the Hellerau district – during a visit to the Deutsche Werkstätten.

Lightingdesign with a system

If travelers feel especially comfortable on board

a Setra, and we know they do, it also has to do

with the interior lighting in the passenger com-

partment – where the focus is on the visual,

emotional and health benefits of light.

To achieve the greatest possible feeling of

well-being, the Setra lighting designers apply

findings from the field of science.

W hen the alarm goes off in the morning and the sun is shining, it’s somehow easier to start the day in a good mood. We feel fit and raring to go. It’s not a coincidence,

but rather the result of the cold-white light which the sun radiates at this time of day. In the evening, on the other hand, the gentle rays of the setting sun have a calming, relaxing effect on us. Our bodies intuitively understand these effects of light, and our metabolism is ideally adjusted to them. Scientific studies have closely researched these and other effects of light on the human organism. To offer travel guests the greatest possible feeling of well-being, Setra works with one of the world’s leading light institutes and makes use of the research results obtained in many different ways. “We are working on replicating this lighting concept from nature, with its transition from cold to warm light throughout the day, into our coaches with the help of seamless regulation,” explains Setra designer Vincent Thess.

“Although passengers don’t actually perceive it directly, they do feel more comfortable.”The findings on the effect of cold and warm white light are only one aspect among many that play a role in a coach’s interior design with light sources. The right light source not only promotes well-being, it also provides a certain orientation while having a positive effect on communication between passengers.

Harmony comes from aboveWhen churches or town halls are illuminated from below, they some- how become more mystical and imposing. When people, however, are illuminated from below, they appear more threatening and frightening. What increases suspense in plays or films, can create stress and anxiety in our daily lives. This is why the primary light sources in rooms are most often found on the ceiling. The same applies to touring coaches – and for good reason. We know the influence of light from above from nature. The sun shines down on us from the sky. Even if it’s covered by clouds, the sky is always bright during the day. This natural light effect contributes to a feeling of harmony.

Lighting effects create a sense of spaceSoft, pleasant lighting not only creates a feeling of security, it also provides orientation – another key topic for the Setra lighting designers. The ideal light consists of a balance between directional and diffused lighting. And there is even a norm for this: DIN EN 12464-1. In the case of a scheduled-service bus, for example, this is achieved through lateral light arrangement. It results in bright and dark areas, as well as contrasts on handrails and upper seat sections, to facilitate orientation in the vehicle. In a touring coach, where more diffused light contributes to the ambience, the Setra lighting designers create selective illumination of possible danger areas. For example, the entries, exits and stairs are illuminated separately. Individual lights near the floor differentiate the walking area from the seat row platform, facilitating orientation when driving at night, and pointing out the step on the way to the seat.In addition to safety-related light sources, Setra supports the well-being of passengers with special, targeted lighting. For instance,

with lit window pillars, which reflect the spatial structure for the passengers. They serve as anchor points so that the environment can be better assessed. “As a moving object, the coach represents a small challenge for the human brain,” explains the designer. “The environment is difficult to classify – especially when it’s dark outside. This creates stress and for some passengers, even nausea – which can be avoided with the lit window pillars.” The illumination of the window pillars acts as a type of scaffold in the dark. It defines the structure of the vehicle, and this is how the passenger gets a feel for the space.

Perceiving co-passengers in the right lightIn addition to a sense of security and orientation, light also creates a cozy atmosphere that conveys relaxation to passengers. If more light is needed,

the reading lights in the service sets can be used. For all those who may just want to talk or sleep, the predominantly diffused light is ideal. This is why communication lighting is a further area of focus in Setra’s lighting concept. In the future, there will be additional diffused communication lighting in Setra touring coaches. This will brighten the face of the conversational partner, without blinding them. Vincent Thess explains: “The light also comes from above, gently bouncing off the back of the seat at the front, and is then reflected by the carefully selected fabric. This ensures that the face of the person sitting next to you is illuminated in a natural way.” There are no shadows under the eyes or nose, as would be the case with bright spotlights from above.Ultimately, operators can decide individually what types of lighting are to be used in their coaches and buses. With the right interior lighting, they can make an amazing contribution to the feeling of comfort and well-being experienced on board their Setra.

Setra supports its passengers’ well-being with special targeted lighting.

The right light sources for practical lighting and ideal orientation in the floor area.

T he empty stands with the rainbow-colored seats rise into the cloudless sky, but the eight Yankee Line drivers who recently

flew in from the US East Coast aren’t concerned with the lack of spectators. The Driver Safety Training program at the Hockenheimring in Germany demands their full attention. Rapid cornering under challenging aquaplaning conditions, or braking on wet, steep downhill surfaces are usually situations that drivers prefer to avoid at all costs. But today, the focus is on manoeuvering the coaches confidently and safely. On this elaborate course, the drivers have an opportunity to experience how the coaches respond to and assist drivers with their advanced assistance systems – under the OMNIplus driver trainers’ expert instruction. For the man at the helm of A Yankee Line, the long trip to Germany was well worth it: “Here in Hockenheim, Setra even made the US-configured 417 models available to us,” says Don Dunham. “My drivers were able to practice on the vehicles they drive every day.”Since 2004, the Boston operator has purchased 56 Setra TopClass S 417 coaches that were manufactured in Neu-Ulm, including two this summer. They were all built to US specifications and many were luxuriously customised by Setra to a high standard specified by Yankee Line – a rarity in the United States, where buses are usually

bought off the shelf. Dunham doesn’t mind waiting for his one-of- a-kind models from the Setra 400 series with 46 and 50 seats. His customers, including corporate groups and major league sports clubs, like the Boston Celtics, appreciate the exceptional quality he delivers. For the high-end tour operators, having their clients touring the Northeastern United States and Canada on board a customised Yankee Line S 417 is also the ultimate in touring luxury. With the S 417, A Yankee Line is the only tour operator in the United States to offer full-leather Ambassador seats with generous seat spacing. Every seat is fitted with airline-style tray tables, electric power plugs and headset plug-ins. On the monitors, passengers are entertained with eight channels, including satellite television. GPS country maps can also be displayed. Also standard in all Yankee coaches: a mini-galley at the rear of the coach with facilities for making coffee and storing cold beverages.Don Dunham’s quality standard – for all things ranging from driver training through to his vehicles’ comfort features – is extremely high. Even if it often implies a little more effort and expense. “I know that the time and expense associated with bringing my key drivers to Hockenheim for Setra training is well worth it,” says the successful operator. “In North America, driver training that offers comparable hands-on experience simply isn’t available from any manufacturer.”Now his coaches will be traveling even more safely from their bases in Boston and New York City on their group tours, shuttle trips and special order excursions throughout the Northeastern United States.

A consistent focus on low costs, and further enhanced acceleration even at very low speeds – the new generation of engines for

Setra’s three-axle touring coaches succeeds at combining character- istics that appear to be mutually exclusive. In conjunction with the GO 250-8 PowerShift transmission, the combined fuel consumption advantage for diesel and AdBlue is at four per cent. This quickly adds up to a benefit of 1,000 euros or more per vehicle, per year. The heavy-duty six-cylinder in-line engine with 12.8-litre displacement from the BlueEfficiency Power engine generation capitalises on a higher maximum injection pressure, new injectors, elevated compression,

a new combustion chamber geometry, a new turbocharger and a patented solution with a reduced rate of exhaust gas recirculation – all to the benefit of efficiency. At unchanged maximum values, power and torque increase in the lowest speed range, giving the engines an entirely new character. In EvoBus test drives, the shifting strategy of the fully automated GO 250-8 PowerShift transmission was adapted accordingly. The engine is available as an option in the three-axle Setra ComfortClass 500 with 350 kW (476 hp). It is available as standard equipment with this performance level in the TopClass 500 series. It is available on request in the TopClass range and the S 431 DT double-decker in the 375 kW (510 hp) version.

T hose were the days! In 1955, the Federal Republic of Germany joined NATO, and the GDR joined the Warsaw Pact, the millionth Beetle rolled off

the production line in Wolfsburg, moviegoers around the world were flocking to theaters to see “Rebel without a cause“, starring James Dean, and racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio won the Formula 1 World Championship with Mercedes for the third time. The world came close to overlooking yet another sensation. At the Geneva Motor Show, Kässbohrer presented the third model in his 10 series, following the S 8 and S 10. No pomp, no show – just a simple sign with an “S 6” inscription announced the new vehicle to the expert audience. Even Richard Gebauer, managing editor of the “lastauto omnibus” journal had to look twice to recognise “that the S 6 model was one of the most interesting vehicles in the hall.” A self-supporting body, front and rear independent suspension, a rear-mounted engine and a cruising speed of up to 100 km/h – all features which had been unthinkable until then in a vehicle class dominated by 1.5 to 2.5-ton front-engine vehicles. In 2015, the Setra S 6 turned 60. And, almost as if time has stood still, the original S 6 from the Geneva Motor Show shines in its original dark-blue colour as part of the Setra classic coach collection. The passenger compart-ment with its touring seats and the driver’s station with the distinctive round dials are as stunnning as ever. The original from the Geneva Motor Show? Not quite. The 22-seater with chassis number 55587 from the Setra classic coach collection isn’t the exhibition vehicle from 1955. But since its extensive restoration in 2007, it is in fact as close to the original as could possibly be.Prior to its makeover, however, it experienced some

very eventful years. The blue S 6 spent its early youth, beginning in 1958, in Dusseldorf with bus operator Albert Küppers. Although the Setra S 6 certainly wasn’t one of the least expensive coaches for small groups, it nonetheless had to be extremely economical. The 63 kW (85 hp) four-cylinder engine, produced for Kässbohrer by Henschel and which needed only 11.5 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, was a strong argument in its favour. The small Setra was also very popular among passengers. The low, single-step entry made boarding easier, and the cabin with its 1.85-metre headroom in the center aisle appeared spacious, and the comfortable recliners could be turned toward the center aisle. It offered exceptional visibility thanks to its generous roof edge glazing. And, as far as driving comfort was concerned, the S 6 could effortlessly keep up with any car.And this was exactly the attribute which attracted the attention of the State College of Engineering in Ulm in the early 1960s. A compact coach with independent suspension on all four wheels appeared to be the ideal testing vehicle. The original rubber suspension, as per the so-called Neidhardt principle, had given way to suspension with vulcanised rubber spring elements, which promised less weight and a longer service life with the same driving characteristics. In 1962, the college acquired a red Setra S 6 for performing chassis and torque measurements – in its simplest line version, but with one unusual special customer request. The wheel arches were designed with Plexiglas sections, which enabled a clear view of the suspension at all times. After around ten years and mileage of only 70,000 kilometres, the red S 6 was discarded and found its wasy back to the factory. In the Setra classic coach collection, it is now one of the few coaches which have been preserved unrestored in absolute original condition. It was only much later, in 1988, that the little blue S 6 returned. After fifteen years in operation in Dusseldorf and later in Herbede in the Ruhr Valley, bus operators Strasek from Piran in former Yugoslavia took over the coach. With mileage of over 1.5 million kilometres, but still in good condition, Strasek offered the Setra S 6 to Kässbohrer for sale – bringing it personally to Ulm to the in-house exhibition in November 1988.As important members of the Setra classic coach collection, these two Setra S 6 coaches can be admired today at trade shows and events across Europe, offering not only diehard fans an opportunity to celebrate the milestone birthday of the smallest of all Setra coaches. The Setra S 6 – innovation in a small spaceThe smallest Setra of all times was and still is legendary, not only because of its small size, but also thanks to its manoeuvrability and great proportions. Its many technological innovations were especially iconic in the mid-fifties, as they enabled Kässbohrer to pro- vide an extremely compact coach with all the comfort of an automobile. Beginning with independent suspension on all four wheels with the rubber-mounted Neidhardt spring system, which guaranteed unparalleled handling, via the drive block, with which the four-cylinder diesel was connected to the ZF five-speed gearbox and the axle trans- mission into a compact unit, up to the steering wheel gearshift. With 1,172 units sold in less than ten years, the S 6 is still one of the best-selling Setra compact coaches of all times. Only its successor – the S 80 – was ordered more frequently. 1,246 times, to be exact.

The Setra S 7 – looking ahead to the new 100 seriesSince the demand for a compact touring coach was unabated even after the end of S 6 production, Kässbohrer quickly introduced the Setra S 7 in 1965. The 7.67-metre- long and 2.30-metre-wide coach already featured the more angular design of the new 100 series, which was officially introduced only two years later. The S 7’s front wheels were also suspended individually, but on trapezoidal arms with coil spring and telescopic shock absorbers. On the newly designed, rigid Kässbohrer rear axles, there was an angle gear which enabled a compact drive design. The key benefit was favourable axle load distribution. Compared to its predecessor, the seating capacity increased to 30 and the luggage compartment doubled – from 1.5 to 3.0 cubic metres.

S ometimes, small things can lead to great success. And sometimes, they even become icons. Like the Setra S 6. The 6.70-metre compact coach, with a

maximum of 25 passenger seats, opened up an all-new vehicle category at Setra, which still today – five vehicle generations later – greatly contributes to the success of the brand: the Setra compact coaches. Like no other manufacturer, Setra has continued to evolve the compact coach through generations. Compact, agile, spirited and comfortable, it continues to play a vital role for many operators as a specialist for small, exclusive groups. SetraWorld takes a look back through time with the Setra compact coach.

The Setra S 80 – the modern classic No sooner had the S 7 been introduced to the market, it was replaced again. One year after the introduction of the 100 series, Kässbohrer introduced the S 80 in 1968. On the outside, this new compact coach was very similar to its predecessor, but instead of a six-cylinder engine, it featured a new, smaller Henschel five-cylinder 5R 1112-13 K with 99 kW (135 hp). Thanks to its smaller dimensions, the new engine allowed an additional row of seats in the passenger compartment. Additionally, a leaf door could be installed behind the rear axle – the new standard configuration for all touring versions of the S 80. The era of the S 80 lasted close to ten years and several years later, it still enjoyed great popularity among bus operators across Europe thanks to its manoeuvrability and versatility.

The Setra S 208 H – without a future in the era of modular design In 1976, the Setra 200 series was introduced, but the right compact coach was only available with some delay. The Setra S 208 H saw the light of day in 1979, as the smallest model of the new coach generation was introduced. Just like its big brothers, it offered high-level travel comfort with comfortable recliner seats and the new cross-flow ventilation. Up to 33 passengers could travel in comfort in the 7.60-metre high-floor coach. But ultimately, the introduction of a uniform Setra modularity in design and production represented the undoing of the S 208 H. The smallest Setra did not fit in with the new modular design system and was eventually replaced with the 1.74-metre longer Setra S 210 HD high-decker compact coach.

The Setra S 309 HD – integral mirrors and more securityIn 1991, the 300 series celebrated its premiere as did the next-generation compact coach: the Setra S 309 HD. Among its most striking features were its distinctive curved design behind the cockpit area and its innovative integral mirror system, which gave the 300 series its unique face. The driver’s compartment was redesigned ergonomically. For extra safety, front disc brakes, an anti-lock braking system and traction control (ABS/ASR), as well as a retarder were standard equipment. An 11-litre V6 engine with 213 kW (290 hp) made the coach ideal for small groups. The 8.87-metre-long Setra S 309 HD offered space for 33 passengers in the three-star version.

The Setra S 411 HD – the TopClass among the compact coachesThe new millennium ushered in a new generation of Setra compact coaches. The 400 series was introduced in 2001, and with it the S 411 HD. For the first time, Setra launched its unique classification – and this is how the 10.16-metre-long 37-seater became the TopClass among the compact coaches. Like all the coaches from the 400 series, the S 411 HD not only delivered excellent driving comfort and dynamic drive, but also numerous safety features such as the ESP stability programme, Brake Assist (BAS) and the Front Collision Guard passive safety system (FCG). More than 850 units sold bear witness to the great popularity of the S 411 HD.

The Setra S 511 HD – the new compact coach generation The S 511 HD from the ComfortClass 500 series, with its length of 10.47 metres, is perfectly tailored to exclusive compact coach travel. The two-axle coach can provide 36 passengers with comfortable 4-star seat spacing. The compact high-decker offers passengers the charm of a compact coach on the one hand, and on the other, the full comfort of a ComfortClass 500 high-decker: with a wide door, generous headroom in the centre aisle and up to 7.5 cubic metres of luggage compartment capacity in the version with a rear door. On the inside, the S 511 HD

can be equipped with several options – from the club corner through to the rear galley – to suit most individual requirements.A six-cylinder Mercedes-Benz OM 470 operates at the rear of the Setra S 511 HD just like the compact coach’s larger siblings in the ComfortClass 500 series. The eco-friendly Euro VI engine delivers 290 kW (394 hp) and torque of 1,900 Nm – plenty of power for a compact coach. Of course, the S 511 HD is equipped with the latest safety and assistance systems currently available in the industry – including the optional Predictive Powertrain Control feature (PPC).

The Coach Multimedia System clearly combines the functions of radio, CD and DVD player, as well as a navigation system and telephone keypad.

The cockpit stands out with exceptional functionality and freedom of movement – even for larger drivers.

T ips offered by backseat drivers tend to be more annoying than helpful, but these really do help.

Eco Driver Feedback, or EDF, is an assistance system that helps drivers of Setra coaches develop an economical and passenger-friendly driving style. As an optional feature available for the TopClass 500, the ComfortClass 500 and the S 431 DT double-decker, Eco Driver Feedback always has the driver’s current driving style in view.

Driver coaching via displayEDF pays attention to four criteria: smooth driving, braking behaviour including use of the retarder, gear switching behavior as well as dealing with the accelerator pedal and idling phases. The evaluation always refers to the current driver who EDF recognises based on the driver card. The driver sees his assessment in the form of a green bar in the central display. For comparative purposes, the EDF draws on the total value of all drivers deployed on the vehicle as well as all journeys. Should the EDF see potential for improvement when driving, it provides a clear notification. “Improve braking performance, roll sooner,” for example, or “Use kick-down reasonably”

and “Turn on PPC”. As does a good instructor, EDF also offers praise. “Good braking”, for example, or more generally: “A good smooth ride”.

Passengers benefit as wellThe EDF’s ultimate objective is to make the driver aware of his driving style while sensitising him to the needs of the passengers under his care. It enables him to recognise his behaviour in view of adapting and enhancing it. EDF provides information on an efficient driving style and can therefore serve as an ongoing extension of an eco-training course. As a result, fuel consumption and wear are reduced, while passengers benefit from a calm, smooth driving style.Coach operator Jochen Edzards from Esens in East Friesland makes use of Eco Driver Feedback in two Setra coaches. “Drivers used to be proud of a straight line on the speedometer gauge. Then came the consumption indicators. Eco Driver Feedback is the next level, with driving tips like in the Formula 1.“ Edzards sees clear advantages with the assistance system: “This is a technological innovation that makes good sense. We expect more efficiency from Eco Driver Feedback through reduced consumption and wear – as well as increased passenger satisfaction.”

Data privacy IncludedUnlike some backseat drivers, Eco Driver Feedback is not intrusive while driving. If the driver wishes to use the assistance system, he can simply call it up on his steering wheel keypad. It also remains confidential, since feedback is not given to the company. After the end of the journey, the driver can delete his personal data. The ride itself, however, continues to flow into the overall result for the vehicle. Eco Driver Feedback is all about supporting the driver without interfering.

Whether you’re a professional football player or an

orchestra musician, you need to practice daily. Bus and

coach drivers who want to minimise consumption while

on the road also need to train regularly – for example

with Eco Driver Feedback. The assistance system

provides valuable tips while driving via notifications on

the central display.

Mr Cortes, we’re standing in front of seemingly endless rows of 13-metre-high shelves. What takes up so much space here?At OMNIplus, we guarantee spare parts availability for our customers for 15 years. And that’s why we store close to all parts for all Setra and Mercedes-Benz coach and bus models. That’s a total of about 130,000 positions: from the smallest screw, all the way through to side walls. Our warehouse in Neu-Ulm is in fact the world’s largest warehouse for coach and bus parts. Our 200 employees serve 70 countries and handle more than 1.6 million outgoing goods every year.

If you send out that many products, you must also need to replenish your supply…Yes, exactly. There’s a lot going out, so a lot needs to come in. Every day, some 50 trucks come in with spare parts. The conveyor line alone in our main hall is over a kilometre long. It transports the goods to the automatic warehouse and then further to the shipping stations via spiral chutes. The larger parts are sorted on to the shelves by more than 80 forklifts and drawbar devices, and then removed from the warehouse once ordered. We have also invested in an automatic small parts warehouse, where around 80 per cent of our order picking positions are incorporated.

How do you keep track of these huge quantities? We work with a warehousing software programme from SAP, the EWM. We were the first to use this software worldwide. It allows us complete control over our stocks. So we always know exactly where each part is located at any point in time. There are several companies that come to visit us in Neu-Ulm, because they’d like to introduce our processes to their warehousing.

Truthfully, Mr Cortes, does anything ever go wrong?I have to disappoint you there. The error rate is negligible: more accurately, it’s at 0.05 parts per million. To make sure it stays this

low, we even duplicate some movements. For example, our employees scan everything twice, both the parts and the packaging units from which they are taken.

Please describe a typical workflow, from order to delivery. We receive orders all day long. They are split into three categories. The “Restocking” category means that the shipment should arrive at the customer’s within eight days. “Scheduled Goods” means that the delivery has to take place the day after tomorrow. And then there’s the “Overnight Express”, which has to be at the customer’s location by the next morning. Express deliveries are brought to customers directly via Sprinter.

What types of customers do you serve?Well, primarily we serve our OMNIplus operations, subsidiaries and authorised partners. We also serve, for example, bus operators who accompany concert tours, since many musicians go on tour with our buses and coaches. So just imagine if a concert by Robbie Williams had to be postponed, because the coach is defective. Out of the question! Basically, all our customers have one thing in common: they need to remain mobile with their coaches and buses. Our customers completely rely on us. Also when it comes to the quality of the parts delivered. With OMNIplus, only certified original spare parts are shipped.

How can you be so sure that the spare parts delivered really are original spare parts?Quite simply because we have a multi-phased control system. All parts delivered to us are verified by 46 employees in two shifts with a visual inspection for quality and quantity. Then, the parts are either labelled or packaged with original OMNIplus branding and then warehoused. This check when receiving goods is, however, only a last check. Our quality control specialists inspect our suppliers’ R&D departments and plants in advance, to ensure that the goods meet our highest standards. Even there, we leave nothing to chance.

RDA Workshop, Cologne (Germany)7/21-23/2015With 900 exhibitors from 40 countries and more than 17 sectors, the RDA Workshop is the leading European trade fair for coach and bus tourism. Daimler Buses was represented with a joint stand for its Mercedes-Benz, Setra, OMNIplus and BusStore brands. The Setra highlight was the new Setra S 511 HD Compact Coach from the ComfortClass 500.

RNTP, Lyon (France)9/30-10/2/2015Daimler Buses impressed visitors to the fair with a very modern stand for its three brands Setra, Mercedes-Benz and OMNIplus. Setra presented the 12-meter-long S 415 LE business with 47 seats, a handicapped-accessible entry and a stop request switch for wheel-chair users. The driver’s cockpit featured a comprehensive entertain-ment system. In addition to a radio with CD player and USB port for charging cell phones, it included an audio/video system with a CD and DVD player. The OMNIplus service brand invited visitors to its comfortable lounge designed as a bus stop.

Busworld, Kortrijk (Belgium)10/16-21/2015With its Mercedes-Benz and Setra product brands, as well as its OMNIplus, BusStore and FleetBoard service brands, Daimler Buses presented an extensive selection from its range of vehicles as well as many of its coach and bus-related services. The frugal two-axle S 415 LE business, which, as a low-entry vehicle, combines the benefits of low-floor and high-floor technology, was presented. The MultiClass bus featured hard-wearing Transit seats for up to 45 passengers. For exceptionally fuel-efficient driving, the overland bus is equipped with the Euro VI Mercedes-Benz OM 936 engine with an output of 260 kW (354 hp) and with the ZF Ecolife 6-speed automatic transmission. The TopClass 500 captured the visitors’ attention from the very first glance. It is the first touring coach to be optionally equipped with LED headlights. On the inside, the smoked silver metallic S 516 HDH is fitted with 48 Setra Ambassador touring seats. With the S 511 HD, Setra introduced a vehicle that beautifully revives the tradition of the Compact Coach. The smallest and most agile Setra of all has enough room for 34 passengers with 4-star seat

spacing – face to face as well, since the touring coach was equipped with two club tables. With its high seating capacity, the S 431 DT double-decker is a very popular model especially with long-distance bus service providers. The 4-star coach presented in Belgium accommodates 80 passengers. The coach has a telephone system with two communication stations at the driver’s station and on the upper deck. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a galley, a video surveillance system, a heated WC cabin and a larger waste-holding tank. With two wheelchair positions, the S 431 DT already complies with the Passenger Transport Act (PBefG) provision, which calls for this expanded space in new vehicles serving long-distance line applications – coming into force in 2016.Back in Kortrijk once again: the OMNIplus service brand presented its new Bus Depot Management service. The pre-owned coach and bus specialists from BusStore informed visitors on their current service portfolio, including the BusStore powertrain warranty and the BusStore vehicle classification system. At the information booth, FleetBoard presented its modular portfolio for efficient driver, vehicle and transport management. The experts from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services were also present to offer their coach- and bus-specific services.

Kloten in-house exhibition (Switzerland)11/5-6/2015The Kloten in-house exhibition is a popular meeting place in the industry for everyone who is interested in buses and coaches. The Setra selection of vehicles was presented in a separate hall. The ComfortClass 500 was represented with the S 511 HD Compact Coach. The 4-meter-high S 431 DT double-decker and the S 516 HDH from the TopClass were on site. As well, several demonstration vehicles were available for test drives in the outdoor area. OMNIplus, BusStore and Mercedes-Benz Financial Services informed the visitors on their service offerings. The Kloten in-house exhibition is also famous for its typical Swiss sausages which were personally barbecued by BusWorld Home staff for their customers.

Czechbus, Prague (Czech Republic)11/24-26/2015For the fifth time, the Central European trade fair for bus and public transport, Czechbus, opened its doors to visitors in Prague. On the day before the fair’s official opening, representatives from the trade press were informed on Setra product innovations at a press conference. At the stand itself, an S 431 DT double-decker coach was exhibited, equipped with two club tables, a galley, as well as a telephone and video surveillance system. A Setra S 415 LE business

was also available for test drives. At the stand, a comfortable lounge area invited visitors to relax and enjoy coffee specialties. Alterna-tively, guests could visit the OMNIplus information counter to find out about the service brand’s offering.

SetraShow, Vetlanda (Sweden)1/15-16/2016The SetraShow – referred to as SetraTräff in Sweden – is a customer event which is held at the BusWorld Home premises in Vetlanda. The North American version of the TopClass S 417 HDH with a club corner and a second door will be presented. As well, loyal Setra customers can look forward to a VIP breakfast at the stand.

BusStore Show, Neu-Ulm (Germany)2/19-20/2016Classified pre-owned vehicles – gold, silver and bronze – will be actively looking for new owners and available for viewing at the 2016 BusStore Show. In addition to vehicles from all major brands, types and models, OMNIplus will once again be represented with an information stand. In addition to its special offers for pre-owned vehicles, the service brand will be offering information on its OMNIplus Training Center – also with live demonstrations. During the handover, Slovans’ captain, striker Róbert Vittek, was especially impressed with Setra’s luxurious amenities. 36 Voyage Ambassador full-leather seats with legrests and embroidered club logos on the headrests transform the journey to out-of-country matches into wellness getaways. The level floor provides players, coaches and team managers with additional legroom. Special highlights also include the club corner at the rear of the coach, the glass roof and a stand-up galley.“The new coach is ideally customised to the needs of our football players. And Setra does full justice to its reputation as a premium brand,” says Ivan Kmotrík, President of the ŠK Slovan Bratislava team.

T he Slovak champion football team – ŠK Slovan Bratislava – is way ahead of the competition. As the first football club in Eastern

Europe, the team travels to games at home and abroad in a Top- Class 500. On July 8, the club was handed over its new S 517 HDH

S etra recently reported its largest order ever in the Eastern European

market. Between May and July 2015, the two Lithuanian long-distance bus operators – Kautra and Toks – together took delivery of 21 new ComfortClass 500 coaches. The two partner companies are among the largest bus operators in the region.

With the new eleven S 516 HD/2 and ten S 517 HD coaches, the two operators are opening up an additional offering in international long-distance line travel –specially targeted to an upscale passenger clientele. Six of the coaches are equipped with a unique seating configuration. Whereas in the first three rows of seats, 2+1 seating is used, two Voyage Ambassador seats are configured opposite

each other in the seat rows at the rear of the coach. The other 15 coaches feature equally comfortable 2+2 seating and a level floor. Each row of seats is equipped with power outlets. Additionally, all the coaches are equipped with a wireless Internet connection.“The equipment meets the high expectations of our very discerning customer group,” explains Linas Skardziukas, CEO at Kautra. “The high quality of the Setra brand has fully convinced us,” says Arunas Indrasius, CEO at Toks. Ten of the vehicles delivered are already being deployed on routes to Western Europe under the Eurolines long-distance line association brand name. The remaining eleven coaches are running the highly popular long-distance bus lines throughout the entire Baltic region in the colours of Kautra or Toks.

M ost operators work closely with a service shop not too far from their own location. But with the ever-growing fleet of

long-distance buses, good relationships with service shops located much further away are becoming increasingly important. Especially when schedules are extremely tight, as they tend to be in the highly competitive long-distance market. Finding time slots for coach and bus maintenance, cleaning or repairs in this market can be a real challenge.

Long-distance bus inspections as part of an all-inclusive worry-free packageThe long-distance bus inspection is tailor-made to the requirements of long-distance bus lines. This all-inclusive worry-free package includes the examination of exterior parts such as tires, windscreens, wipers, windscreen washer fluid and lights. Also included is the inspection of key interior mechanical and electronic components, including seat belts, seat backs, emergency equipment, air filters,

interior lighting, the WC cabin, electrical outlets, USB ports and wireless Internet. The long-distance vehicle check also includes an engine compartment inspection. Coolant and engine oil levels are checked and refilled on request, the engine compartment is examined for leaks, and the belt drive’s clamping device is also inspected. A seal of approval at the entrance door confirms the vehicle’s certification – while giving passengers a reassuring feeling when boarding. OMNIplus also offers many different flexible services which can be booked individually, such as an exterior vehicle wash, an interior cleaning, fresh water filling, WC emptying, the OMNIplus TireService and GlassService as well as parking spots with electricity, water and security duty.Of course, the standard OMNIplus services continue to be available, such as the supply of spare parts around the clock through the OMNIplus 24h SERVICE. Technical services are provided during extended hours as well as during off-time through the 24h SERVICE hotline – in the event of a larger breakdown, a replacement vehicle will be offered if available.

Available at 90 service points in GermanyThe new offering is available at 90 service points along key long- distance routes: for example in Germany at the nine BusWorld Home locations in Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig, Dortmund, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Ulm, Munich and Plattling. Also at all 16 OMNIplus BusWorld locations between Bremen and Regensburg and at most service points in the OMNIplus ServiceNetwork. This covers almost all German long-distance bus stations. Additionally, OMNIplus service is available at 15 locations in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic.

Visitors to the Busworld fair in October were clearly impressed with the beautifully designed interior of the Setra S 511 HD.Colour designer Cordula Lambert from the Setra DesignCenter team in Neu-Ulm was responsible for the stylish appearance of the compact coach in Kortrijk. Together with her colleagues, graphic designers Roland Hirsch and Marc Jech, and textile design engineer Eva Müller from sales design – all three specialised in the fields of textile, graphic and communication design – she took on the exterior and interior design of the exhibition vehicles. We’re talking about highly creative professionals orchestrating materials and colours with all their experience and sense of style.“We’re coach customisers”, says Eva Müller. “And with Setra, it’s all about the freedom to be distinctive. Not every coach has to be a designer piece, but they all need expert interior design.”Of course, passengers should find the interior fittings appealing. And this is where the challenge begins, since there are so many different

tastes to be catered to. The intended coach applications also play an important role. The differences between users of service buses and touring coaches are obvious, but there is so much more to be considered. Should the coaches appeal to younger or older travellers? What may suit a compact coach won’t necessarily be right for a long high-decker. Heavily used long-distance buses require different fabrics and colours than elegant super-high-deckers targeting more discerning travelers. A coach isn’t only its owner’s business card. It also has to suit its individual application. At the personalised consultation, visitors take a seat at a large oval wooden table, and a big 60-inch screen dominates the exhibition room. It allows the 3D bus designer software to bring the interior of the coach to life. With this fascinating programme, the DesignCenter team can configure any Setra coach or bus. Every detail – on the inside and the outside – becomes visible from all perspectives and down to the last detail. The virtual 3D bus designer images are complemented by the very real paint and fabric samples, as well as the double seats in the DesignCenter. After selecting the coach’s exterior colour, the focus moves to the interior of the coach on screen. The seating is a focal point, with seats and backrests, headrests, side panels, piping and seat back sections to be selected. Then come the pockets or nets, as well

Each and every Setra is unique, created for a very individual application. A highlight when

purchasing a Setra is a visit to the Setra DesignCenter in Neu-Ulm. This is where planning

take place with the customer.

N ow there is one more reason for BusStore customers to opt for a pre-owned coach or bus with Gold classification. For

Mercedes-Benz and Setra vehicles which, as per specifications for Gold classification, are no more than three years old and have maximum mileage of 300,000 km, buyers will now automatically receive the BusStore warranty on the entire drivetrain.“This allows a customer purchasing a pre-owned bus or coach from BusStore to be on the road without risk and to also be certain of follow-up costs,” explains Thomas Streichsbier from BusStore Market Management. Even if the buyer, against all expectations, experiences damage to the drivetrain, with the BusStore warranty, he will not incur any costs. In the case of damage, BusStore covers the entire costs up to the amount of the purchase price. The customer only pays the sales tax charged for the repair and replacement parts. The BusStore warranty is valid for twelve months from the date of purchase of the pre-owned vehicle. Vehicles that are less than two years old with mileage that is significantly less than 200,000 km are an exception, since the original ex-factory warranty usually applies here for the drivetrain. “In these cases, the customer may contact us to arrange a later start date for the BusStore warranty,” explains Thomas Streichsbier. During the BusStore warranty’s contract period, the vehicle’s mileage is then unlimited. To be able to take advantage of the BusStore warranty, the customer needs to comply with the vehicle’s prescribed maintenance schedule which must be carried out at one of over 600 European OMNIplus service points. The BusStore

warranty is available in all European countries, with the exception of Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus.Every vehicle with the BusStore warranty is provided with a sticker with the warranty number and the BusStore claims office’s telephone number, which is placed within sight of the driver. “It’s very important that the driver provides the warranty number to the service workshop, since it is required to process the repair,” explains Thomas Streichs-bier. If it is not possible for the vehicle to reach the next service point on its own, the BusStore claims office will provide assistance for transport. This service, however, is not included in the scope of the BusStore warranty. Once the damage report has been completed, the workshop then files a request for damage coverage with the BusStore claims office. “As a rule, the confirmation is given rapidly, so that the workshop can repair the damage quickly,” says Streichsbier. Customers also benefit from the permanent availability of original spare parts in OMNIplus tested quality.“With the BusStore warranty, our customers are even better protected against potential damage costs,” confirms Thomas Streichsbier.

as decorative inserts. Would you prefer leather material, fabric or a combination thereof? Velour or flat woven fabric, a velvety chenille, perhaps a shiny yarn as an accent, or two-coloured curtains? And what about the walls and doors of the washrooms, the cupboards and, in the case of overland buses, the handrails? “We take time for our customers,” says Cordula Lambert. She and her colleague usually have two consultation appointments per day. Marc Jech and Roland Hirsch, the specialists for exterior graphic design, are available to provide assistance to customers when making their selection with a wealth of helpful tips and advice. Fashionable trends play a relatively small role in the team’s design recommendations, since Setra coaches have exceptionally long service lives. The challenge is to develop an interior design concept with the customer which will still appeal to him and his passengers in 10 years. “We have been known to recommend against customer ideas that are perhaps too extreme,” smiles Cordula Lambert. “Everyone deserves expert, honest and professional advice.” Of course, the design professionals know that the interior design will also play a significant role later on when reselling. The current collection includes close to 100 patterned upholstery fabrics, over two dozen plain-coloured fabrics and the same number of Composition colours. There are also variations with darts and pleats, piping or headrest sections. The designers present the materials directly at the seats, which makes it easier for customers to imagine the final result.

The operators also wish to see how their visual concept in terms of the coach’s fittings comes to life. To this end, the two designers work very closely with their colleagues Roland Hirsch and Marc Jech. They advise customers on exterior design, make recommendations on the type of paint to be used or how the company logo can be applied onto the vehicle. Of course, customised designs are also possible. The harmonious, visual overall impression of the coach, the skilful symbiosis of interior and exterior, are very important to the team at the Setra DesignCenter. The customer’s personal tastes are always decisive to the coach’s configuration. And a recipe for the right choice doesn’t exist. “It’s always a very individual process,” explains Cordula Lambert. “There are large customers who prefer standardised equipment and smaller, individual customers who value customisation. And sometimes it’s the other way around.” Flexibility and stylistic confidence are highly valued with customers. The consistently high quality of the collection is guaranteed, since all materials are thoroughly tested at the EvoBus in-house specialised laboratory at the Hosdere plant. EVO 130.61 is the factory standard, which determines surface weight, thickness and fiber density, in addition to prescribed tests defined for flammability.

Colour fastness, fluff, pilling, abrasion resistance, stretch, tension, sliding resistance, aging, smells, soiling and cleaning behaviour are all tested – the materials used in a Setra need to go through and pass dozens of tests. With all this being expertly taken care of by Setra, customers can devote themselves entirely to the interior design of their Setra. It doesn’t always have to be luxurious, as impressively shown in Kortrijk with an S 415 LE business with easy-care upholstery in a fresh design. It can also be flexible, as in the case of the double-decker: whereas in the lower deck a bright fabric will visually enlarge the space, a darker version of the same fabric works more effectively in the bright upper deck with its TopSky panoramic glass roof.Cordula Lambert sums it up: “Every coach is unique.” After all, it’s a Setra – with equipment and fittings defined individually at the Setra DesignCenter. “Sometimes,” says Eva Müller, “when looking for an idea, sparks fly and, together with our customer, we’ll opt for a path less travelled.” And that is when, yet again, a very special and unique Setra comes to life.

Textile designer Eva Müller advises on interior fittings.

The customer’s wishes are always at the heart of the consultation process.

A t 100 km/h, the S 511 HD chases the steep curve at Daimler’s testing site in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. The coach tilts more

and more until it reaches an incline of almost 90 degrees. The passengers are pressed into their seats with almost twice their own body weight. It’s almost like being on a roller coaster. And many can’t help but express their excitement with ecstatic screams. The drive on the steep curve is the absolute highlight of the visitor tour – and definitely not for the faint of heart. The Daimler test track attracts up to 4,000 guests per year. Since September, the Setra Compact Coach has been deployed in Unter- türkheim as public bleachers on wheels. It succeeds its predecessor, the S 411 HD, which was very successful on the test track for many years. Most visitors are surprised at how dynamic and agile the new S 511 HD is on the challenging track and how confidently it performs during extreme manoeuvers. At the beginning of the tour, Volker Sülzer picks up the guests with the S 511 HD at the factory gates. He knows the test track inside out and has been accompanying visitors there for many years as a tour guide and driver. Along the route to the track, a film about the history of the test site can be seen on the monitors. Since 1956, vehicles manufactured by the Daimler Group are put to the test under the most extreme driving conditions. In 1967, the facility was expanded to include, among other highlights, the spectacular steep curve.

“Whereas today so much can be simulated on a computer, new vehicles used to be tested entirely through test drives,” explains Volker Sülzer. On the rough road track, the so-called “Heide track”, the Setra Compact Coach brilliantly proves that it can handle even the toughest road conditions. The coach sways fiercely to the left and to the right. “The visitors definitely get a good shaking,” smiles Sülzer. The steep climb and the tight curve with a 20 degree side slope aren’t a problem for the S 511 HD either. The coach is absolutely safe and secure on the road. The passengers experience how the vehicle’s ESP® kicks in in the context of a wagging manoeuver. While the vehicle remains in the lane in perfect control with the ESP®, the front wheels lift by up to ten centimetres from the ground without ESP® during the fierce steering manoeuvers. The tour’s crowning glory is the ride through the steep curve. “Thanks to the steep curve, we can also run long road tests without loss of speed on the test track,” explains Volker Sülzer. With its short wheel- base and length of only 10.4 metres, the S 511 HD can take on the extremely steep curve. “Because of the arched shape of the steep curve, longer vehicles would touch the track at the front and rear of the vehicle,” explains Sülzer. In order to withstand the enormous forces in the steep curve and to keep gripping the road, the S 511 HD doesn’t require any extra built-in technical or design aids. At the plant, an additional, separately controllable driving level is generated, so that the vehicle overhangs don’t grind on the sharply curved road. Otherwise, the vehicle is identical to the production model. “As you can see, our Setra coaches can withstand some grueling conditions,” Volker Sülzer says proudly.

Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) is a speed regulator which inter- venes in the control of the 3-PowerShift transmission. PPC allows anticipatory selection of both gear and speed based on the topogra-phy of the route – with a positive impact on fuel consumption. According to Evobus, up to 4% less fuel consumption is possible with consistent use of PPC. Journalists have even proven in tests that an average reduction in fuel consumption of 9.2% is possible. When they equipped their coach with the new PPC system, Cars Bihan consciously took on a pioneering role in the French market. Today in France, the majority of Setra customers order their Comfort-Class 500 coaches with Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC). Cars Bihan is very satisfied with PPC, and as a result the company now

orders its Setra coaches with the PPC feature. This applies to the S 517 HD the operator took over in April 2015, as well as the S 519 HD which will be delivered shortly.

C ars Bihan was one of the first bus operators in France to take over a ComfortClass S 516 HD coach with Predictive Powertrain

Control (PPC) in September 2014. Their decision was partly based on the benefits of the PPC feature on fuel consumption of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, where Predictive Power- train Control has long been deployed successfully. After a year of experience with PPC in a Setra

coach, the long-time EvoBus France customer also reports very positive results.“With the new Euro VI vehicle, we were able to reduce fuel consump-tion to below 20 litres/100 km, compared to 24 litres/100 km with an S 415 HD with a Euro V engine. In my estimation, two of the four litres saved are due to the consistent use of the PPC system,” says Daniel Bihan, technical director of Cars Bihan from Lesneven in Brittany.
