AromAtherApy for the Immune SyStem

Aromatherapy is a method of natural healing that has been used for thousands of years by the Egyptians, Aboriginal peoples and in traditional Chinese medicine for healing purposes. Ranging from the common cold to headaches and even varicose veins. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils, which are the oils that are extracted from a specific herb or plant using the method of distillation. Our bodies absorb the healing properties of the concentrated oils through the skin as well as sinuses. Due to this concentrated form of the plant, you should always use a carrier oil, such as Jojoba, Coconut, or Sweet Almond oil when using essential oils. Never apply them directly to the skin. Jojoba oil will preserve your essential oils and make them last longer. Placing them in a cobalt or amber glass container ensures optimum potency and preservation.

Essential oils have antiseptic and antiviral properties that we could all use. Now that the cold season is upon us, all of us need help boosting our immune system and extra support to reduce the symptoms associated with cold and flus. Essential oils can pass through the cell membrane and act on a cell that has already been taken over by a virus to do just that! Immune boosting, cold and flu essential oils contain many properties that allow them to be effective at maintaining health and wellness.

• Frankincense is an antiseptic and contains monterpenes that help eliminate toxins from the liver and kidneys. Frankincense also contains sesquiterpenes which stimulate the limbic system of your brain as well as your hypothalamus, pineal and pituitary glands.

• Tea tree contains antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. • Eucalyptus has antiseptic and antibiotic properties. • Peppermint oil contains strong anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antiviral

properties. • Pine needle oil supports the respiratory system as an expectorant and it contains

antiseptic and antibacterial properties. • Lemongrass has analgesic, antimicrobial, fungicidal, and bactericidal properties.

It is also used for decreasing perspiration and by itself smells amazing. • Basil essential oil is known for its ability to treat nausea, indigestion and

respiratory problems due to its antispasmodic properties.

Essential oils for the immune system are best applied using a roll on. After you have made your recipe you will apply the essential oil blend to either your pulse points or acupressure points. The pulse points are the points on the center of your wrist, palm side. Below is a diagram of some great acupressure points for colds and flus. When applying to the acupressure point or pulse point you will take the roll on and circle it for 3 seconds twice a day, or as needed. When using essential oils on children dilute your recipe by using more of the carrier oil and half of the recommended essential oil drops in the recipe.

Have fun on your essential oil journey and enjoy the amazing aromatic smells that the Earth offers us!

Ever wondered how clean the ingredients are in your Health and Beauty products? Trust me, this is one area where you want to care about what you are using on your skin, hair and body! Did you know that there’s an app for that?

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. The Environmental Working Group’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, they drive consumer choice and civic action.

They work for you. Do you know what’s in your tap water? What about your shampoo? What’s lurking in the cleaners underneath your sink? What pesticides are on your food? How about the farms, fracking wells and factories in your local area? Do you know what safeguards they use to protect your water, soil, air and your kids? Which large agribusinesses get your tax dollars and why? What are

GMOs? What do they do to our land and water? The EWG has done the research and can answer all these questions for you!

The American government doesn’t require health studies or pre-market testing of the chemicals in personal care products, even though just about everyone is exposed to them. Through Skin Deep, the EWG puts the power of information in your hands. When you know what’s in the products you bring into your home and how those chemicals may affect your health and the environment, you can make informed purchasing decisions — and help transform the marketplace. At the same time, they advocate responsible corporate and governmental policies to protect the most vulnerable among us.

EWG’s Skin Deep app gets you critical information about your personal care products right at your fingertips.

Here’s how to use the database to find out

exactly what you want to know:

Want to find out if your products are safe?Look up a product. Enter its name in the white search window.Look up an ingredient. If you want to know if a particular ingredient is

Page 17: World of Nutrition€¦ · World of Nutrition November 2015 Page 1 World of Nutrition November 2015 Sharing WON Knowledge Wow, here it is November already! We have been in our new

World of Nutrition November 2015 Page 17

safe or if you’re allergic or want to avoid it for other reasons, the database contains information about possible health concerns, which products contain it, other names — and a whole lot more.Search by company. Want to know how a certain company stacks up? Search its name to see how its products rate.Find safer alternatives. Pick a category (toothpaste? shampoo? mascara?) and peruse product ratings. Warning: goods in some categories, like hair relaxers, have uniformly high hazard scores.Understanding the ratings. For every product and ingredient in Skin Deep, there’s a two-part score – a hazard score and a data availability score.

The ingredient hazard score, from 1-10 reflects known and suspected hazards of ingredients.

The data availability rating reflects the number of scientific studies in the published scientific literature and the number included in the Skin Deep database.

To calculate a product score, we tally the hazards of individual ingredients and evaluate each product in relation to the rest of the products in the Skin Deep database. The safest products score well by both measures: a low hazard rating AND fair or better data availability.

Page 18: World of Nutrition€¦ · World of Nutrition November 2015 Page 1 World of Nutrition November 2015 Sharing WON Knowledge Wow, here it is November already! We have been in our new

World of Nutrition November 2015 Page 18

What do you mean by “data availability”? The “data availability” rating measures how much is known about an ingredient. Not all ingredients are equal when it comes to safety data. Some have been studied extensively. For others, there is only a modest volume of research. Some have not been tested at all.

A product’s low score on the hazard scale doesn’t mean much if scientists know very little about the chemicals in it. Your best bet? A doubly good score: low hazard rating + high data availability.

Avoid shopping hassles. Finding the safest products in stores near you isn’t always easy. Being armed with this app can help, or you can shop at World of Nutrition where we routinely check the EWG’s site to ensure all products we carry are safe for you and your family.

YogA @ Home: dHAnurAsAnA - Bow PoseHappy Holidays!!! A wonderful time of year is upon us, full of family, friends and festive parties. For many, it’s a time of over indulgence to be (hopefully) resolved with a resolution in a couple months.

Yogic teachings guide us into moderation. Don’t deprive yourself but be mindful about what it is you are putting into your body. Try to keep a regular yoga practice going even if you have to shorten your time for it at this time of year. Even five minutes a day provides amazing benefits to both mind and body.

Dhanurasana is a prone pose. It stimulates the digestive organs, provides a stretch to the front body, shoulders and quads, and opens the heart. It is best done on an empty stomach.

To get into Dhanurasana, you will most

likely want to warm your body up with a few other postures first. A few rounds of sun salutations are always a great way to prepare the body for other poses.

Dhanurasana:Begin laying on your abdomen with the arms alongside the body, chin resting on the mat. Bend your right knee and reach back with your right hand gently pulling your heel closer to your glutes. Relax your right leg and bend the left knee, pulling the left heel closer to your glutes. Alternate back and forth three times. Then bend both knees and reach back to the tops of your feet with the hands. You want to try to keep your knees and hips in line here, so don’t let the knees splay out to the sides. To do this, keep your inner thighs engaged and hugging in towards the mid line, without squeezing

them together. Use the strength of your legs to push the tops of your feet into your hands and feel your whole body rise upward as you balance on either your abdomen or your pelvis. If you have not eaten in a couple of hours, experiment with gently rocking forward and back on your abdomen. You may also gently rock side to side and even roll a bit on the stomach. Any movement in this pose will help to apply pressure to the digestive organs so they can do their job even better.

Again, this pose should be done on an empty stomach, before you partake in the delicacies of the season, not once you are feeling overly full and bloated. Done regularly it will improve digestion and help you make it through this season of indulgence without feeling guilty.

The Won Scoop will offer insight into several of our bulk herbs each month. Sage: In medicinal lore, sage has one of the longest histories of use of any medicinal herb. Sage is more than just your average kitchen herb. It contains many vitamins and minerals as well as volatile oils. Increasing the use of sage in your diet is recommended for people with inflammatory conditions as well as

bronchial asthma and atherosclerosis. Sage is also an excellent memory enhancer and is used to reduce agitation for Alzheimer’s patients. An effective antioxidant, sage can soothe indigestion. Women that are hoping to dry up their breast milk, or to relieve hot flashes during menopause can take sage.

Parsley: Parsley deserves more credit than just a garnish for your dinner plate. Parsley has been credited to controlling cancer, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as helping to prevent osteoporosis. Parsley acts as a pain reliever with anti-inflammatory properties. It can provide relief from gastrointestinal issues like indigestion, stomach cramps, bloating, and nausea all while boosting the immune system.

Thyme: It’s about “thyme” you realized the great qualities of this amazing herb. The flowers, leaves and oil of thyme are often used by people to treat many ailments including bedwetting, diarrhea, stomach aches, arthritis, colic, sore throat, cough, bronchitis, flatulence and as a diuretic (to increase urination). Thyme contains many important essential oils, which have anti-septic and anti-fungal applications. Gargling with tepid thyme water may relieve coughs, sore throat and bronchitis symptoms.

Rosemary: I actually fell in love with this herb over the summer after I lathered a chicken with rosemary and garlic. My poor plant didn’t stand a chance as I was often at it with scissors, recreating my new favorite dish Rosemary/Garlic Chicken. Rosemary was traditionally used to help alleviate muscle pain, improve memory, boost the immune and circulatory system, and promote hair growth. Rosemary is a rich source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. It is often used to treat indigestion and is widely known to improve memory and concentration. Even Ophelia mentioned ‘there’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance’ in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Oregano: It’s name means “mountain joy,” and the ancient Greeks and Romans used it as the symbol of happiness. Oregano contains antioxidants for immune system support. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties, anti-inflammatory properties, is useful for upper respiratory infections and has cancer-fighting effects. Oregano can be useful for colds, dandruff, bloating, allergies, fatigue, muscle pain, bronchitis, headaches, intestinal parasites, repelling insects, acne, toothache, heart conditions, earache, and menstrual cramps.

Fennel: Fun fact- fennel smells like licorice. All parts of the fennel plant can be used even though we typically only think of the fennel seed. Ancient Chinese medicine has found beneficial uses for fennel, from congestion to conjunctivitis, to stimulating the appetite and increasing the flow of breast milk. Essential oil of fennel provides upset stomach relief, and tea made from ground fennel seeds is believed to be good for snake- bites, insect bites, food poisoning, and soothing a sore throat. Fennel protects your skin from pre-mature aging. It’s a great natural aid for any skin care regimen. Fennel may act

as a carminative, which prevents the formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract, helping to treat colic in babies.

Garlic: In my house we can’t use enough garlic. I use it in anything and everything I possibly can. Garlic supplementation helps to prevent and reduce the severity of common illnesses like the cold and the flu. High doses of garlic appear to improve blood pressure for those with known high blood pressure. It may improve cholesterol levels, which lowers the risk of heart disease. Garlic was one of the earliest “performance enhancing” substances. It was used in ancient cultures to reduce fatigue and enhance the work capacity of laborers. Garlic also treats acne, hair loss, and improves bone health. I use garlic for chronic low-grade inflammation, which is the leading cause of disease, premature aging and illness.

Ginseng: I think most people relate ginseng to energy, but it has many other health benefits that deserve some recognition. It can be useful in the treatment of anemia, cancer, depression, diabetes, fatigue, hypertension, insomnia, shock, effects of radiation, effects of morphine and

cocaine use, environmental, physical and mental stress, and chronic illness. It can be used to help with erectile dysfunction, hepatitis C, and symptoms relating to menopause, and can also be used for lowering blood glucose levels and controlling blood pressure.
