As we collect postcards and news from colleagues and friends working all around the world this summer, we are reminded that children need us now more than ever.

Our Honorees often send messages to us late at night (while the children are sleeping) so they can catch us up on bits of important news – a new clean water well, a school room being freshly painted, or a child with renewed dignity after learning something important in their daily lessons.

Working together with our dedicated Board of Governors, we have found that giving is the one thing we can do that enriches all of our lives together.

We send you this newsletter to let you know more about the good works you are supporting in the world today. May all of your summer adventures be rich and meaningful.

Warm regards,

Harry Leibowitz and Kay Isaacson-Leibowitz, Co-Founders

Bahia Street Breaks Cycles of Poverty and Violence

“Your investments support the work of incredible changemakers who are doing the very best work for children worldwide.” Founder, Harry Leibowitz

Rita Conceição begins her day by focusing her abundant strength and creativity on the girls

in her community who need her most desperately.

Each morning she gathers the girls at her center to share lively educational lessons. Rita

feeds them. She listens carefully to their tales of urgent new family crises. She allays fears.

She offers compassionate care. She assures that each young girl has safe harbor.

Bahia Street serves the impoverished young women living in the shantytowns of Salvador,

Brazil. Co-Founder Rita Conceição (a 2008 World of Children Honoree) has dedicated her life

to breaking the cycles of poverty and violence these young girls suffer, by offering quality

education programs.

Just last year, Bahia Street enrolled sixty young girls and continued to mentor an additional

forty girls now in high school. Today, six graduates are enrolled at the university.

Education has proven to be the best promise for a better life in Salvador.

Your funds assure food, clean clothes, a safe harbor, and the life changing spark to learn.

Children Are The Hope Of This Earth

Darius Inspires On 100,000 Mile Roll Of His Life Darius Weems and his inex-

haustible crew have recently

returned home to Athens, GA,

after spending 10 months on

the road hosting screenings

of their multi-award-winning

film, Darius Goes West: The Roll

of His Life. Darius is traveling

the country to raise awareness

and funds to fight the number

one genetic killer of children –

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. DMD is the disease that

took the life of Darius’ older brother several years ago,

and now effects Darius, but

never slows his inspired work.

In his travels with his crew,

Darius has now logged more

than 100,000 miles, visiting

children in 42 states, and

appearing at 126 middle and

high schools. To date, Darius

and his crew have raised

$1.6 million for Duchenne

Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)

research. Darius received a 2008 World of Children

Founder’s Youth Award.

Donor Alan Gold (far left) joins Darius and his crew appearing in Dallas

When I won World of

Children’s Founders

Youth Award, hailed

as the “Nobel Prize

for Children,” I felt

humbled, proud and

grateful. I was humbled

to be in the company

of such accomplished

co-recipients, proud to have my efforts and organization

recognized in such a meaningful way, and grateful for

World of Children’s investment in furthering the goals of my

nonprofit, RandomKid.

World of Children offers their Honorees something that

goes beyond the award itself—something that can be

characterized as a “send-off,” or better, a “catapult.” Because

World of Children is recognized globally for their prestige,

their award recipients are recognized as worthy of the

world’s consideration. From being written up by Nicholas

Kristof of the New York Times, to sharing my story over the

radio waves of Voice of America, I went from trying to be

heard, to being invited to speak.

...I used to wonder why donors would be motivated to give

monetary awards to people. How does that make it possible

for the donors to change the world? I can now tell you.

People who invest in us believe in the power of our work.

Because they don’t have the time or energy to do what we

do, they make it possible for us to do what we do better.

They change the world through our vision, by giving us

greater reputability, visibility and funding.

...I am forever grateful to World of Children. If nothing else,

remember that a child is the only known substance from

which a responsible leader can be made. Children are not just

the voiceless and the vulnerable; they are also the inheritors

and the hope of this earth. We are worth every investment.
