World Market for Connectors Used in Mobile Infrastructure

Equipment 2017 to 2022

Report No.: P-940-17

October 2017

Bishop and Associates, Inc. has just released a

new six-chapter research report providing a

qualitative and quantitative analysis of

connectors used in mobile infrastructure

equipment. The report provides connector sales

forecasts for the years 2017 through 2022 for

over twenty different equipment types and by

region of the world. Also examined is the growth

rates of evolving versus legacy equipment.

The growth of mobile Internet users is undeniable. One million new mobile Internet users are added to

the network every single day. While the wireless network still supports 2G and 3G, 4G will be the dominant

access technology worldwide by 2018. Mobile traffic on the network grew by 70% between the first

quarter of 2016 and first quarter of 2017. By 2022, there will be nearly 500 million subscriptions of 5G

globally. In addition to the traditional mobile devices like laptops and cell phones, there will also be an

increase in new IoT devices like exercise/health monitors connecting to the mobile networks.

The base station equipment generates most of the revenue for connectors. This equipment is evolving

from the old base station transceiver models to a centralized/cloud radio access architecture using remote

radio heads (RRHs) and fronthaul network equipment. This evolution will spawn a healthy growth rate.

The highest growth rate will be for DAS, followed by MME/PCRF then PGW/SGW/SGSN. These products

are associated with the evolution of the network to support Gigabit 4G, 5G and the growth in traffic.

The legacy MSC Switch and MSC Gateways will completely disappear by 2020.

Mobile Infrastructure Connector Revenue by Equipment Type 2017 to 2022 with 5-Year CAGR

Mirroring the overall Telecom market, the mobile infrastructure connector market is dominated by PCB-type connectors. PCB connectors will see significant growth between 2017 and 2022 since every piece of equipment contains these connectors. The highest growth rate will be in fiber optic connectors, followed by telephone, then RF coax. Fiber optic connector revenue is growing due to the increased use of optical technology in the fronthaul, metro and core. The growth in telephone connectors shows the effect of Ethernet ports transitioning through Gigabit, 10G, 40G, and eventually 100G. RF coax growth is due to the RF connectors used in new base station configurations.

The market for connectors sold into the mobile infrastructure equipment market will also increase significantly between 2017 and 2022. This sub-sector will exhibit the highest growth rate of any sector within the telecom connector market. In addition to equipment and product analysis, the report also offers a detailed overview of the companies to watch as the mobile infrastructure market evolves. This overview looks at not only the connector companies, but also the equipment manufacturers and the top chip suppliers.
