THE PALEOLITHIC AGE• Definition: early period of human history

in which humans used primitive stone tools. Referred to as prehistory because there was no written record/language.

• Time Period: 2.5 million BC to 10,000 BC

• AKA: Old Stone Age, Paleolithic Era

• Characteristics: hunting and gathering, used primitive¹ tools, nomadic², adapted to environment (Cave man), used fire, lived through the last ice age, created art.

1 Primitive- characteristic of early ages or of an early state

of human development: The first or earliest of the kind or

in existence,

2 Nomad (nomadic)- people who move from place to

place. No permanent sedimentary home.

THE NEOLITHIC AGE• Definition: The prehistory age when

some humans began the transition from hunting and gathering societies to systematic agriculture¹.

• Time Period: 8,000 BC to 4,000 BC

• AKA: Neolithic Revolution, Neolithic Era, New Stone Age

• Characteristics: growth of crops, permanent villages, trade, division of labor², advanced tools and weaponry, male domination

growing of food on a regular basis.

2 Division of Labor- a production process in which a worker

or group of workers is assigned a specialized task in

order to increase efficiency.
