scHool cAlenDARachievement for our students and their teams and i wish them all the very best as they continue to excel in the sport. well done!

space Camp and indonesian tour

i wish to congratulate and welcome back our students and staff that participated in the space Camp during the term break. From all accounts, the trip was a great success and the students did us all very proud. i want to thank Ross Pringle, natalie tate and simon maurdev for providing our students with an outstanding experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Likewise i wish to also congratulate and welcome back our students and staff that participated in the indonesia trip. this too was a fabulous experience for our students and staff and the visit to our sister school was very successful in strengthening the relationship between eltham High school and Dian Didaktika High school. i know that the home-stay was a highlight of the trip. i wish to thank Cara skeen, Diane Parry and tim natoli for their commitment to the trip and their support of our students.

it is important to acknowledge that without staff commitment and dedication initiatives such as these just would not happen.

year 12 Practice exams

i congratulate all our year 12 students for the way in which they engaged in the practice exams during the first week of the term break. Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive, stating that they found the experience invaluable. A big thank you to the staff that organised the examination period as well as to the staff that assisted in the supervision of the exams throughout the week.

traffic Congestion on Bolton street

you will all be aware that from August of this year until January of 2018, Bolton street is undergoing an upgrade. During this period of works, traffic along Bolton street and surrounds has become quite severe and this becomes more intense during the normal peak periods in the morning and afternoon. Further to this, the building works associated with the redevelopment of the eltham Leisure Centre along withers way are contributing to the traffic outside the front of the school.

whilst it is easy to say use an alternative route, i believe that the congestion in the side streets is also of concern. if your drive and pick up your children to and from school there are some things that you can do to ensure your children arrive at school safely and on time and leave the school in the same way at the end of the school day:

• you can drop your children off close to the school and allow them to walk a short distance to school. you could organise a pick up point that is near the school but not in front of the school;

• you can leave a little earlier from home in the morning knowing that there will be traffic to contend with;

• Be patient when in traffic and do not make decisions, which can place you, your children and/or others at risk.

the local community has been waiting for a very long time for the redevelopment of Bolton street. it is true that we will have to suffer a little for a longer-term gain. Let us do this in the best way possible taking into consideration the need for students to arrive to school on time and to do so safely.

mudbrick House tour 2017

the eltham Mud Brick House tour will take place on sunday 22 october. our Friends of music support Group are calling for volunteers from our community to support the running of this event. the following will be most welcome: morning and afternoon house crew (to have a presence in the houses); parking attendants; people to help with ticketing; people to help with refreshments and standby drivers for mini buses ( a car licence is fine).

this event is a really important and significant fundraiser for us to be able to buy new instruments for our students and also helps put people from near and far in touch with eltham’s mudbrick heritage.

if you are able to help, please complete the google document located at the following link:

https://goo.gl/forms/RH7k0CLnmvnyi1ti1

and a member of our Friends of music support Group will liaise with you directly.

Please note if you can volunteer, we are holding the tour Launch night at 7:30 pm on wednesday 11 october at school to meet the householders, our major sponsors, nillumbik Councillors and to meet other volunteers in your team on the day. it would be great if you could get along to this.

term 4 working Bee

i take this opportunity to invite all members of our community to the next working Bee which will take place this coming sunday 15 october, 9:00 am -12:00 pm. members of our Grounds Committee met late last term to plan and organise the work for this day. everyone is welcome and please be aware that no specific skills are required outside of a willingness to work alongside other members of our community to contribute to the ongoing upkeep and development of the school grounds. As always a delicious morning tea will be offered as will a barbeque lunch. i look forward to seeing you all here on the day.

Day before melbourne Cup Day

Historically the day before the melbourne Cup holiday has had very poor student attendance. Consequently, and as a way of causing the least disruption to the educational program of the school, the last few years have seen this day used as time-in-lieu for teachers. As clearly expressed in the Victorian Government schools Agreement 2017 and supported by the Department of education and training, this compensates teachers for the time they allocate beyond work hours throughout the year to student progress interviews involving students, parents and staff.

in the past, irrespective of the time-in-lieu arrangement, the school has remained open on the monday before melbourne Cup Day as year 12 exams are generally on during that time, and the school is an examination centre. this will also be the case this year. However, while this day would seem to be the most appropriate in terms of minimising disruption to the educational program of the school in the provision of time-in-lieu, i am writing to ascertain your intention as to your child’s/childrens’ attendance on monday, 6 november in order for us to plan effectively. the school will be open on this day and based on previous experience, due to the small numbers of students in attendance, it is most likely that an alternative educational program will be in place. your information will be valuable in ascertaining staffing requirements for this day.

I ask you to confirm with us only if your child will be attending on Monday, 6 november, 2017 by contacting the appropriate sub-school office either by telephone on 9430 5111 or by email through each of the sub-school team Leaders before wednesday, 1 november:

aSSiStant PrinciPal’S rEPort Respectful Relationships at eltham High school

Respectful Relationships is about tackling family violence through education.

Rosie Batty, Ceo of the Luke Batty Foundation noted “the school community is an essential part of social reform by modelling a culture of respect through the whole school, not just by teaching respect in the classroom”.

Just like other major social and health issues such as smoking and road toll, evidence shows that family violence can be prevented by working across the whole population (in this case, all schools) to address the attitudes, beliefs and knowledge that support violence.

the Victorian Government is investing $21.8 million to deliver Respectful Relationships and as part of this initiative Victorian schools have been supported to review their practices and policies, and model respectful relationships and gender equality across the whole school community.

A good education is about becoming a member of society and succeeding in life – knowing how to build respectful relationships is key to achieving this. when young people build positive relationships with their teachers and peers they feel safer and happier at school, are more resilient and have positive social attitudes. Positive relationships increase a young person’s sense of social connectedness and belonging to school and family, and result in better health and academic outcomes.

eltham High school is a lead school in this Government initiative. in addition to the work the school is doing with our own community, we will also be working with a number of partner schools on their Respectful Relationships journey.

Further information about Respectful Relationships is available on the Department of education and training website: www.education.vic.gov.au/respectfulrelationships

over the coming months we will be sharing stories of the steps that we have taken so far to consider how best to enhance the work we do to create a culture of respect in our school community.

Responding to Cold and Flu season

the Department of Health and Human services (DHHs) has advised that there is an increased rate of influenza reports throughout Victoria. schools are also reporting higher rates of students affected by influenza.

How can my school respond best?

All schools have been encouraged to consider the following important points when responding to students affected by influenza:

• students with cold or flu-like symptoms are encouraged to seek medical attention, limit contact with others and stay at home until symptoms have passed;

• if a student becomes ill at school with these symptoms, the school will contact the family and arrange for the collection of the child;

• Good general hygiene remains the best defence against infection. students are encouraged to regularly wash their hands and cover their nose and mouth if sneezing and coughing.

thunderstorm Asthma Awareness

every year during grass pollen season there is an increase in asthma and hay fever symptoms, and during grass pollen season there is also the chance of a thunderstorm asthma event.

what Causes thunderstorm Asthma events?

thunderstorm asthma events are thought to be triggered by an uncommon combination of high grass pollen levels and a certain type of thunderstorm, resulting in large numbers of people developing asthma symptoms over a short period of time.

those at increased risk at this time include:

• people with asthma, people with a past history of asthma;

• those with undiagnosed asthma (i.e. people who have asthma symptoms but have not yet been diagnosed with asthma);

• people with hay fever who may or may not have asthma;

• having both asthma and hay fever, as well as poor control and self-management of asthma, may increase the risk further.

it is timely to remind families to ensure that the school has a current asthma action plan for any students with asthma.

A copy of your child’s current Asthma Action Plan should be submitted to marnie wadsworth, First Aid officer who can be contacted at [email protected] or by telephone on 9430 5111.

we are calling on all past squad swimmers, new swimmers, staff, friends and family to get on board and join us as swimmers, lap-counters or pool side supporters to help us on the day.

Please feel welcome in joining us and encouraging our wonderful squad to work hard in achieving their goal.

EltHaM HiGH - SPacE caMP 2017

A message from our friends at the American Bob Jones school:

“our Australian Friends

on Friday, a group of Australian students toured Bob Jones and visited 5-10 different classrooms. they’re here on a tri-city tour, spending most of their time in Huntsville, orlando, and san Francisco experiencing the typical tourist destinations. After journeying 20+ hours, the general Australian consensus was that the time change was tough, the food at space Camp contains too much sugar and salt, and people here are generally friendly.

while in Huntsville, they attended space Camp. they all seemed to enjoy mission and the scuba diving simulation of zero G. they also spent an afternoon at Bob Jones to see what a typical day is like in an American high school and then they will attend the JC football game this evening.

Bob Jones students enjoyed the experience as well. they discussed language, politics, religion, and government, but they spent most of their time talking about cultural differences, memes, and music. they also enjoyed talking about food, and the Australian students let students sample everything from candies to Vegemite.

Johnathan Hampton, a junior, said, “it’s interesting to see how other people see things and their view point on stuff.” He asked them a question about the invasive cane toads, to which an Australian student responded, “Kill them off.”

the Australian students confirmed that there are big spiders and snakes and noted language differences, such as biscuits instead of scones, sunnies for sunglasses, and chuck instead of vomit.

of course, each Australian group noted the pervasive use of the word “ya’ll.”

some of the students also did the same tour two years ago, and hopefully, Bob Jones students can visit them in Australia one day.”

the average person needs about three litres of water a day, but what if this water is polluted, dirty or generally unsafe to drink?

How to solve this, is the problem confronting “the mortys” - Zac Broeren (Year 10, Everard House), Noah Field (Year 10, Andrew House), Paddy Leahy (Year 10, Stewart House) and Chloe Jasper-Batson (Year 10, Rutter House). working with Dr evertz, they are working on a water filtration system that is sustainable. many questions have to be considered:

• using uV light, how best to destroy the DnA (Deoxyribonuceic acid) of the bacteria present in the water, what source of uV light would be most efficient? LeDs or fluorescent tubes?

• would reflective surfaces on the container maximise the transmission and absorption of light?

• How could the container be sealed so that uV light cannot escape and injure the operators?

• How much does uV-C wavelengths attenuate in water? what if the water is dirty?

• what is the best method to remove particulates from the water, sand? Charcoal? Calcium?

what should the dimensions of the container be? should it be shallow? Deep? How can the volume be optimised while retaining processing efficiency? Could it be a pipe, with a radius that is the limit of attenuation?

the final presentations will be on Friday 10 november.

ELTHAM MUDBRICK TOUR 2017 SUNDAY OCTOBER 22, OPEN HOUSE 10AM–4PM

Join us on a tour of five beautiful and individual mudbrick houses in the Eltham area. Nillumbik’s mudbrick houses, always unique architecturally, are part of an alternative housing movement ahead of its time; built with environmentally sustainable and recycled materials, in natural harmony with the bush landscape.

The tour maintains a 50+ year tradition pioneered by Alistair Knox and is run by Eltham High School community volunteers to help support its renowned music program, with major sponsor Nillumbik Shire Council and other Nillumbik community sponsors. Eltham High School ensemble musicians will perform in The Barn Gallery at Montsalvat on the day between 10am and noon.

This year’s Tour features mudbrick houses on Harcourt Hill in Eltham, otherwise known as ‘the Hill’. This undulating and densely vegetated terrain situated north of Bridge St and west of Diamond Creek first experienced intense development after World War II. However, this year’s Mudbrick Tour will showcase unique homes constructed more recently between 1987 and 2001: two built by Michael Young, one designed by Trevor Weichmann, and another built by Bill Barrington with an extension designed by Lynnsay Prunotto. The latter’s garden features the work of native landscaper Sam Cox.

Tickets at www.trybooking.com

Adults: $25 (Children under 16 free)Concession: Seniors/Students/Health card $20Photo ID required on the day

• Tour starts from Montsalvat, 7 Hillcrest Avenue, Eltham
