The Social Age• Where knowledge is no longer enough...

• It's about ability to create meaning...

• and do it again, tomorrow, differently.

• Agility: of thought and in action

• Facilitated by technology. Framed by an evolved social contract

• Change is constant

• Reputation subverts formal hierarchy

Page 6: Workshop the net model of social leadership (march 2014) v1

Social Leaders• Work within and alongside communities

• This social power compliments formal authority

• It's an addition, not an alternative

• Social Leadership is contextual. And consensual

• Reputation sits at the heart of it

• Social Leadership is facilitated by technology

Social Collaborative Technology

• Is effortlessly social

• It's agile: fluid, flexible

• Links easily and is lightweight: dinosaur systems are dying

• It's synchronous

• It's built to share: every device of consumption is a device of production

Social Technology...

The ecosystem of social• So in this ecosystem we see the technology facilitates change

• But change isn't confined to technology

• The social contract is evolving too

• Our relationship with knowledge is evolving

• What used to work, doesn't cut it anymore

• Hierarchical systems are subverted by social ones

• We have a need for social leadership

Foundations of Social Leadership

• Social Leaders operate in two spaces: formal organisational ones and the social spaces that surround it

• In formal spaces, authority is generally hierarchical

• In social ones, it's founded upon reputation within communities

The 3 Dimensions of Social Leadership

• NARRATIVE - is about taking a stance, defining your space and building upon it. It's about stories

• ENGAGEMENT - is about being effective in communities, based upon your narrative approach. It's about where your authority is based

• TECHNOLOGY - is about collaboration and co-creation within communities. It's about social capital and taking other people with you. It's about humility, not circuitry

The 9 components of Social Leadership

• Each of the 3 Dimensions has 3 components. They're the skills you need to master, the skills the organisation needs to be agile

• They follow a sequence, starting with 'Curation' and ending with 'Collaboration'

• They reflect the nature of authority in the Social Age
