Flexible packagesto be a top trend, claims expert By Christina Eccles

NO contract memberships will be atop trend this year, according to anindustry expert, as gymgoers lookfor more flexible packages to meettheir needs.

Co-founder of PayasUgym JamieWard told Workout that over thecoming months, customers will belooking for more than just anannual membership offer; insteadshopping around online to find thebest deals for them.

He explained: “An even greaternumber of gyms will be experi-menting with no-contract member-ships, with the exception of per-haps one or two high end opera-tors.

“Whilst the traditional annualgym membership remains a coreservice for many, it is clear thatcustomers are increasingly lookingto be provided with a better 'menu'of services so that they can choosethe right package for them.

“No-contract memberships arehere to stay and the industry willneed to work harder than ever oncustomer service and standards inorder to earn loyalty rather than

contractually enforce it.”Jamie added that operators who

want to thrive in 2015 shouldensure they are easily visible online– and well represented by positivecustomer feedback – to ensure theyare able to capitalise on this trend, something which PayasUgym canhelp with.

PHYSICAL activity is the ‘simplest andcheapest’ route to good health, according to shadow secretary of statefor health Andy Burnham, who at arecent conference set out Labour’splans for a national ambition to makethe country more active.

Speaking at the annual ukactiveSummit in London – a day whichfocused on solving inactivity – the MPcalled for a move to a more preventa-tive NHS model, which has physicalactivity at its core, as well as a greatercommitment to increased levels ofschool sport to get children engagedwith leading healthy lifestyles from ayoung age.

He said: “This government had thebest inheritance in terms of sport –and they have squandered it.

“This should be the moment whenthis country makes a big change onlevels of physical activity and I do notsee that happening.

“Sport builds strong people and astrong country. Physical activity is thesimplest and cheapest route to goodhealth.”

At the event, he set out Labour’sambition to tackle the inactivity epi-demic, claiming physical activity will

be at the centre of the party’s electionpolicy and a priority for investment.

He added: “I will make no apologyfor a government acting as a nannystate for children – they are not ableto make their own decisions. There ismuch more we could do as a societyto give children a healthier and betterstart than we are today.

“When every child leaves primaryschool, they should be able to swimand ride a bike safely.

“With adults, we should be empow-ering people to make their owninformed choices.

“The move from inactivity to activityis the easiest lifestyle change to makeand it is a catalystic change.”

Trainer Colin puts onnaked fitness classesFITNESS classes with a differencehave become a talking point at a stu-dio in South Yorkshire where teacherColin Dobson doesn't expect hisclients to wear expensive gym wear...

In fact, he doesn’t expect them towear anything at all. Colin, you see, teaches fitness classes for naturistsand he does it naked.

Colin said: “I coach more than 25clients from all walks of life, in theirown homes, outdoors, or at my gymand private studio in Barnsley.

“I also teach a thriving online natur-ist community via Skype and Yahoo.”

But isn’t exercising naked danger-ous? The answer is a resounding no.

“I don’t ask ladies to run naked on amachine and chaps don’t do it either –it’s not a good idea for obvious rea-sons. Most of my classes consist ofmat work and stretching, Pilates andyoga.”

But why would anyone want to exer-cise in the buff?

Colin added: “I’ve spent many yearsdoing clothes-free activities. I particu-larly enjoy the outdoors, rambling, hiking and cycling.

“I’ve been teaching naturist groupsfor four years now and the classes arepopular.

“Some people come along to seewhat it’s like. Some love it, othersdon’t. But most of the people who tryit come back time and again.

“I don’t have to advertise. Peoplecome to my classes after being rec-ommended by a friend.”

His clients consist of men andwomen aged from 19 to well into their

70s. But Colin only started teachingfitness classes to naked people byaccident.

He added: “It was in December 2010when someone dared me to go outand clear heavy snow without wear-ing any clothes for a charity stunt. Ihave been a naturist since my lateteens, so I did it.

“The stunt was put on the internetand went viral raising £12,000 for thecharity.

“The TV people picked it up anddescribed me in a news bulletin as anaked fitness trainer.

“Someone saw it, put two and twotogether, and asked if I taught fitnessclasses in the nude. And I thoughtwell why not?”

A FLEDGLING independent club inMiddlesborough has got off to a flyingstart; attracting some of the industry’stop names through its doors andbeing crowned the country’s secondbest new gym.

The team at MAS Body Gym is cele-brating after scooping the runner upprize in the Newcomer of the Year cat-egory at The National Fitness Awards;beating off strong competition fromfive other finalists to claim the secondplace spot.

The achievement follows a success-ful year for the club, which is also atraining ground for the likes of fitnessmodels and competitors Ryan Terry,Luke Sandoe and Carly Thornton, who the gym sponsors with its MASBody Development clothing range.

Gym owner Mike Hind said: “When Iwent on holiday, I used to visit gymsin different countries. I learned a lotfrom looking at what other countriesare doing; it gives you a better insightinto the fitness industry as a whole.

“When I went to America, mybiggest inspiration was Gold’s Gym.Everything from the moment youwalk through the door, blew me away.I want to be the UK’s version of Gold’sGym.”

When the club opened, a special

offer of £150 for a year’s membershipwas snapped up by 100 people; gen-erating £15,000 which Mike used tobuy kit to get the business up andrunning.

Now every month, he adds to that, using money generated by member-ships and secondary spend to expandhis offering.

He added: “Every time we get newmembers, the money gets put into apot. We ask members what theywould like to see.”

Mike told Workout his biggest rea-son for setting up the gym was to helppeople get fitter and healthier, ratherthan to make a profit, but that theclub’s NFA shortlisting meant a lotbecause it showed the industry isrecognising the hard work that isgoing into his business.

He added: “I work 22 hours a daybut I wouldn’t change it. When we gotshortlisted, I thought, this makes it allworthwhile to get that recognitionfrom the industry.”

UK FITNESS SCENE22According to Leisure-net Solutions’ latest Health and Fitness Omnibus Survey (HAFOS), cost remains one of themost significant barriers to activity. Workout reveals what this means for operators, as well as taking a look atother findings from the survey.

OVER a third (37 per cent) of UKconsumers stated a low-costmembership of £10-£15 wouldentice them to join a gym, resultsshowed, and lower cost was alsothe strongest encouragementfactor at 60 per cent.

Reducing fees would also per-suade 60 per cent of respondentsto try out their local leisure cen-tre. As has been the case in pre-vious years, the percentage ofpeople understanding theimportance of physical activityremains high, with 86 per cent ofrespondents stating regular exer-cise is important.

But this is the lowest level seenin any previous HAFOS surveys –falling from 92 per cent in 2012.The number of people seeingexercise as ‘very important’ hasalso fallen considerably, from 69per cent in 2010 to 48 per centthis year.

Leisure-net Solutions directorMike Hill said: “The opportunityfor our sector is clearly there; yetparticipation levels have againfailed to increase significantlyand, this year, the public’s per-ception of the importance ofactivity has dropped, too.

“The stagnation in participa-tion could be because many donot understand the ‘new offer-ings’ available – having not usedour facilities for many years, theyaren’t convinced what we’reoffering is good value.

“While lower cost is always themost quoted encouragementfactor, and this year is no differ-ent, our detailed analysis contin-uously shows lowering pricingwill not in itself make a differ-ence. Price is closely related tovalue for money and a gymmembership only becomes‘expensive’ if it’s not being usedregularly.

“That tipping point whenmembers feel they’re not gettingvalue for money is lower forbudget gyms, so while peopledon’t see cost as a barrier tobeing more active – the mainbarriers remain work-relatedtime pressures – a large percent-age do say lower costs wouldencourage them to joingyms/leisure centres.

“Much more important foroperators to focus on are thepsychological barriers like per-ceived lack of time and low moti-vation. Gyms and leisure centresneed to continue to build short“mini” workouts into their offer,as this will help us break downthe alleged time deficit barrierrelated to work pressures.Operators need to focus on moretargeted messages and calls toaction when marketing to thegeneral population.”

This year’s research also askedconsumers about niche/microgyms for the first time, andrevealed 57 per cent of womenand 50 per cent of men would beencouraged to join a class/activi-ty, if it was offered in amicro/niche gym context.

Mike added: “The niche/microgym approach may be anotherway to turn the tide of inactivity.

“Gyms which take one or twospecialisms and concentratepurely on that in an extremelyfocused way seem to appeal toboth men and women, and to allage groups in a way the low-costmodel doesn’t.” The HAFOS has been runningfor more than a decade and isthe leisure industry’s onlynational survey reporting thepublic’s attitudes and percep-tions towards physical activity, including current behavioursand usage.

THE introduction of two-way radiosacross sport and leisure facilities inSalford is helping revolutionise cus-tomer service – and potentially savelives.

Salford Community Leisure hasinvested in Motorola XT420 radiosand six-way chargers, along withwaterproof bags for sites with swim-ming pools.

To introduce the radios, the organi-sation teamed-up with comms supplyspecialist Rocom, who conducted var-ious site surveys before makingequipment and technical recommen-dations.

Head of sport and leisure GarryBateman said: “We initially discussedthe concept in a team meeting; pri-marily it was about customer serviceas well as health and safety.

“Better communication was the key.It could be as simple as someoneturning up at reception to be shownaround the facility.

“That member of staff can’t leavetheir post but they can now just radioa colleague. It’s instant, more respon-sive communication.

“Speeding up communication andmaximising resource are vital intoday’s world where every pennycounts. Staff numbers have been cutto the bare minimum in recent years.

Budgets are so precious and we aredown to essential spends. We simplycannot afford to waste any moneywhatsoever. The radios have onlyrecently gone live across all sites andthe feedback has been very very posi-tive.”

According to Garry, communicationis so much better since the introduc-tion of the radios and they are alsoproving invaluable when it comes todealing with emergencies.

He added: “It could be an awkwardcustomer, a broken leg from a footballmatch or someone collapsing on atreadmill.

“We find the radios are much moreflexible and practical than an in-builtalarm system and more discreet thanusing a tannoy. There are emergencyalarms in the pools though.

“Communication is the essence. Youcan’t be dealing with a life and deathsituation on your own. If you areresuscitating someone it’s better to bedoing it in tandem with someoneelse.

“In the last six months we have hada number of incidents including heartattacks where a radio would havehelped to summon assistance from afellow member of staff. We havedefibrillators and fully trained staffwho can deal with this.

“We would strongly recommend allsites have radios on the grounds of

customer service alone but the factthey can play a vital part in emer-gency incidents makes them lifesavers.”

ACSM has released its predictions forthe Top 10 fitness trends in 2015.

With New Year upon us, it might bea great time to take some of these intoconsideration as you evaluate pro-grams and offerings for 2015.

Top 10 trends courtesy of ACSM:1. Body Weight Training:Body weight training uses minimalequipment making it more affordable. Not limited to just push-ups and pull-ups, this trend allows people to get“back to the basics” with fitness.

2. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT):HIIT involves short bursts of activityfollowed by a short period of rest orrecovery. These exercise programmesare usually performed in less than 30minutes.

3. Educated and Experienced FitnessProfessionals:Given the large number of organisa-tions offering health and fitness certi-fications, it’s important that con-sumers choose professionals certifiedthrough programs that are accreditedby the National Commission forCertifying Agencies (NCCA), such asthose offered by ACSM.

ACSM is one of the largest and mostprestigious fitness-certification

organisations in the world.

4. Strength Training:Strength training remains a centralemphasis for many health clubs.Incorporating strength training is anessential part of a complete exerciseprogramme for all physical activitylevels and genders. The other essen-tial components are aerobic exerciseand flexibility.

5. Personal Training:More and more students are majoringin kinesiology, which indicates thatthey are preparing themselves forcareers in allied health fields such aspersonal training. Education, trainingand proper credentialing for personaltrainers have become increasinglyimportant to the health and fitnessfacilities that employ them.

8. Fitness Programs for Older Adults:As the baby boom generation agesinto retirement, some of these people

have more discretionary money thantheir younger counterparts. Therefore, many health and fitnessprofessionals are taking the time tocreate age-appropriate fitness pro-grammes to keep older adults healthyand active.

FUNCTIONAL TRAINING36

For whom thebell tolls ...By Mark laws, Jordan Fitness

THE Kettlebell is an old-schoolstrength tool that has made a resur-gence in recent years. So much so,there is no getting away from them...and for good reason.

You can do standard weight trainingexercises with a Kettlebell, but to real-ly take your training to another levelthen you should look to introducemore traditional ballistic exercisessuch as Swings, Cleans, Snatches andJerks. Not only will you target eachmajor muscle group, but you will alsowork so many different parts of yourbody in such a short space of timethat your fat burning potential will bedrastically increased.

Kettlebell users can expect to devel-op a strong and lithe physique that isrobust and as injury-proof as possi-ble... so what are you waiting for?

Well the first hurdle is decidingwhich kettlebell is most suitable foryou. I am a kettlebell enthusiast, andin some ways I am a kettlebell tradi-tionalist – I received my training frommultiple time World Champion ValeryFedorenko in Cincinnati, however Iam fully aware that many people useKettlebells for a wide range of purpos-es. So which type of Kettlebell shouldyou use?

Cast Iron: These 'no frills' Kettlebellsare made from solid cast iron and areinevitably the cheapest you will find. They do the same job as any other, however they are really well suited tooutdoor boot camps, Kettlebell tradi-tionalists or anyone who is happywith a low-cost yet effective product.

Neoprene: Also made from solid castiron except these Kettlebells areuniquely colour coded with a neo-prene covering for easy weight identi-fication. Not only will the neoprenecasing protect the floor in your facili-ty, but it will not scratch, tear or scufflike similar plastic covered Kettlebells.Ideal for mainstream gym chains witha large membership base.

Chrome handled: Moving awayfrom a solid iron handle, these

Kettlebells are covered in rubber witha smooth chrome handle, makingthem a lot more user friendly. Maybenot ideal for your hardcore Kettlebelllifters, but the Chrome handledKettlebells are perfect for boutiquestudios, premium health clubs or any-one that finds the cast iron Kettlebellsuncomfortable on their hand and/orwrist.

Competition: These Kettlebells aresuitable for even the most profession-al of lifters. They are made from steelwith a hollow core and all weights areexactly the same size to meet strictcompetition standards. They have asmooth, comfortable handle and arecolour coded for easy weight identifi-cation. Perfect for anyone preparingfor Kettlebell Sport competitions.

I must make it clear – any style ofKettlebell can be used by any personat any type of facility... but somestyles may be more suitable than oth-ers.

Kettlebells have a long and colourfulpast, we have established that thereare many different styles of Kettlebellwhich have evolved in recent years, but what does the future hold for themodest Kettlebell?

I struggle to shake off my tradition-alist roots, so I would say..."if it ain'tbroke – don't fix it". Fads and trendswill always come and go, but theKettlebell has survived hundreds ofyears so far and I don't see any reasonfor that to change. It is great to havethe different styles mentioned aboveas that allows anyone with any level ofexperience to benefit from this tool. The principles of the Kettlebellremain consistent, the different stylesjust allow for a wider audience to takepart – same horse, different jockey.

As fitness professionals we have aduty to enhance the ability of ourclients to cope with the rigours oftheir daily lives.

After 10 years I am yet to find any-one who would not find life a little biteasier after the introduction ofKettlebell training to their trainingroutine.

Escape Fitness has introduced the first Competition Pro Kettlebell range to its portfolio ofstrength based products. The Competition Pro Kettlebell matches competition grade stan-dards and is weighted at the bottom, ensuring it moves quickly around the hand, wrist andarm. The bells range from 8kg to 32kg in 4kg increments, meaning there are weightoptions suitable for most users.

As well as being rotated, the clubcan be swung and slammed againsthard surfaces – without causing anydamage.

The soft flexible head has an inter-

nal shifting weight made up of steelshot that provides dynamic resistanceas well as ‘audible feedback’.

The ability to hear the shifting steelis particularly beneficial when com-paring movements on each side of thebody and identifying weaknesses.

The sound element also adds adimension to controlled exerciseswhich rely on the user keeping thesound as quiet as possible.

Similarly, exercises relying on powerrequire the user to make the soundexplosive. Clubs range in weight from1kg to 3.6kg.

THE introduction of a smart phoneapp is helping Edinburgh Leisurekeep up with competitors and offermembers more flexibility when itcomes to booking their sessions.

The operator has become an earlyadopter of the MobilePro app fromGladstone, giving customers theoption to gain website access andbook fitness classes using theirmobile phones.

Edinburgh Leisure’s ICT managerStuart Fairbairn said: “Our customershave been asking us for a while now ifthey can access our website and bookfitness classes on their smart phones, and we knew that if we wanted to staycompetitive, it was vital for us to offerthis kind of flexibility.

“In January and February, we soft-launched MobilePro in 15 out of our30 sites, and started to actively pro-mote it on March 3 via our websiteand Facebook page. The results have

been incredible. During the soft-launch period we had 1,000 down-loads; just over two weeks after theofficial launch those numbers hadalready topped 3,500, and they’re nowat nearly 12,000.

“To date, 85 per cent of moduledownloads have been for bookingclasses, with just over a quarter of allfitness class bookings being made viathe app.

“Feedback from customers has beenterrific. They love being able to bookand cancel classes on the go, evenwhen the sites are closed, and theyalso like how easy it is to access infor-mation about how many spaces areleft in a class or where they are on awaiting list.”

Edinburgh Leisure is now looking athow to incorporate bookings foractivities outside the gym or fitnessstudio – such as golf, tennis, bad-minton and squash – into the app.

KIRKLEES Active Leisure hasstreamlined its membership man-agement by adopting Gladstone’seyeQ business intelligence tool.

As a Gladstone customer since1997, the trust was already using awide range of the company’s prod-ucts across its 14 sites, includingPlus2 for member management, the Gladstone ManagementConsole ), Contact Manager, self-service kiosks, Connect for onlinebooking, Join@Home for onlinememberships and Learn2 forcourse management.

Business improvement officerAshleigh Grailey explained: “Whatappealed to us most about eyeQwas the opportunity it offered tocreate custom reports to fit theunique needs of our business, aswell as the option to pull real-timeinformation when required, there-by removing the delay in providingfigures that could affect a business

decision.”For the operator, one of the most

useful features of the product is theQuery Builder, which allows themto select the fields they need andbuild reports that exactly reflectinformation requirements.

Ashleigh added: “The biggest ben-efit so far has been the ability toclosely monitor income using cus-tom reports, saving on staff time.

“In the past, when site managerscame to submit their weeklyincome reports, they had to workthrough a list of information andpull it into a report format. Now,they simply have to open a spread-sheet and eyeQ will populate itwith the information exactly asthey require it.

“The workbook option alsoenables us to dig deeper into thisdata and find specific customerrecords that we need to investi-gate.”

REFER-all, which specialises in soft-ware solutions to enhance the effi-ciency of exercise referrals from GPsto leisure providers, has won a sec-ond tender with WandsworthCouncil.

In 2012, Footsteps for Health inWandsworth tasked Refer-all withcreating a software hub to assistwith the running of their service.

This umbrella service commis-sions lifestyle services for patientsvia GPs using a single form to refertheir patients to a central hub.

The aim was to improve the serv-ices for everyone involved and, looking to the future, the councilwas keen to move away from paperreferral towards electronic referral.

Now with the Exercise on Referraland specialist activity servicesunder the jurisdiction of

Wandsworth Council, the authoritymade the decision to phase outpaper based exercise referrals forthese services, with Refer-all againwinning the tender.

Health living project officer –Footsteps Matt Robinson said:“Refer-all helps with the manage-ment of referrals, with tracking andalso strategically, as we can see howthe different services fit into thewhole scheme, the whole patientintervention.

“It is also really helpful for thelifestyle services to see how thepatients use a wide range of servic-es. When I am asked to report onreferral ‘traffic’, I can see the targetsfor each service and have the capa-bility to track these.

“This creates a targeted approachin terms of intervention and gooddemographic information that wecan act on.”

Have you got everythingyou need in one place?THERE is never enough time it seemsto get everything done in one day.

Well, that’s how it felt in my gymyears ago which is what lead me tocreate ClubManager.

Each day seemed to start with a cou-ple of items that did not get donefrom the previous day’s to do list, meaning I had a longer list every day.

I then worked out that much of thereason for my never ending list oftasks was due to fact that each job onthe list took ages to get done.

Why was that? The reason was worryingly simple. Allthe jobs I needed to do were in differ-ent places, which took up more time.

Then of course I would createanother spreadsheet to solve theprocess that did not work with theprevious spreadsheet and every time Idid this things just got more compli-cated.

It was this frustration that led me tocreate ClubManager. I needed a toolwhere all my solutions were accessi-ble in one place, things like: Automated direct debit reconcilia-tion so I knew who had not paid. Member attendance records. Retention tools so I can keep cus-tomers paying for longer. Key Performance indicators view-able at a glance every day. Online Class bookings. Epos.

 Daily accounts and managementreports.

The list goes on.ClubManager has given the time

back to gym owners around the worldto grow their business, and their dailytask list is a breeze now.
