Dense and lightweight blocksThe relationship between the dense concrete block and the lightweight block is easy to understand:

• The heavy block is designed to be strong and in general also designed to be covered over with render of some form of cladding such as plastic or timber.

• The lightweight block is much lighter than the dense block. It is designed to insulate a property (i.e., to trap the warm air generated in the house).

Setting out

The trench and wall markings used when setting out are done with the profile and spray paint transferred to the ground.

ConcreteConcrete is used in the trench to support both the brick and block walling.

Only when the foundation concrete is hard enough can the cavity wall be set out and built.

Two different materials with a gap between them form a cavity. This cavity protects the house from moisture, heat and weather conditions.

Cavity walls• Bricks and blocks are used to maintain a cavity. The cavity is two

skins of walling, one outside and the other inside the house. The main reason for this is to keep the property dry.

• Cavity walling uses bricks from dense engineering to soft clay. Blocks used in cavity walls range from dense concrete to lightweight; all have their own purpose and use.
