Agricultural establishment: any farm, forest operation, or nursery engaged in the outdoor or enclosed space production of agricultural plants

What sort of operations are required to comply with the WPS?
When an “agricultural establishment” uses a pesticide label containing WPS requirements
.
Agricultural establishment: any farm, forest operation, or nursery engaged in the outdoor or enclosed space production of agricultural plants
An establishment that is not primarily agricultural (such as: parks, golf courses, landscape or roadway maintenance contractors) IS an agricultural establishment if it produces agricultural plants for transplant or use in another location instead of purchasing agricultural plants.
Examples of agricultural plants:1. Flowering and foliage plants and trees
2. Seedlings and transplants
3. Turf grass produced for sod/plugs
Worker Protection Standard40 CFR PART 170
To comply with the WPS, the owner or person responsible for management of workers and handlers must provide annualtraining to include awareness of :
1. Symptoms of pesticide exposure and precautions to prevent it at work and home.
2. Display pesticide information on safety, application and hazard info
3. Provide decontamination supplies, soap & water to wash and eye rinse
4. Provide emergency assistance when worker or handler exposed to pesticides
5. Respirator fit test and training when label requires this PPE.
a) Poster with all training info required by WPS training
b) Centralized posting of pesticide name, EPA#, area treated, REI w/ map of area.
c) SDS = safety data sheets
Factors to consider for Bermuda and Goose grass control in seashore paspalum greens and fairways
Bermuda grass-BG(Cynodon dactylon)
Goosegrass-GG(Eleusine indica)
1. OK for Estb. Bermuda Grass ½” or higher2. Not for greens, tees, aprons. Not for SP.
1. BG & SP, OK tolerance = marginal .2. 1 application/year, see supl. label3. Not for greens or collars = aprons.
1. OK on BG & SP “avoid…unless control or injury can be tolerated”.
2. Not for greens w/5 ft. b/w treated area.
1. St. Aug OK w/pest = BG, SP not listed as site2. No restrictions for greens, tees, aprons.3. Milky liquid, 4 lb ai/gal
1. SP as site with BG suppression2. Not on greens, fairways & tees OK.3. Clear yellow liquid 1.5 lb ai/gal

Seashore paspalum fairways, control Bermuda and Goose grass
• Winter best for BG suppression due to slower growth recovery• Sequence of two 3-way tank mix matters for maximum BG
suppression and SP safety!Tenacity + 4 oz/aSencor + 4 oz/aPrograss SC (4.0 lb ai/gal) 32 Prograss (1.5 lb ai/gal) 85.3 oz (6 gallons/yr limit)MSO 2%
• Tenacity + Prograss provides long lasting growth suppression of BG, no goose grass control, UH tests show Tenacity helps with reduction of Pylex green color loss in next application
• Sencor provides reduced green color loss in SP
• Mix also cause some growth suppression of SP
• Follow up 3-way tank mix provides goose grass control and added BG suppression• Apply 14 days after 1st application

• Pylex for goose grass control• Sencor provides reduced green

of BG
• Follow up 3 way-tank mix provides goose grass control and added BG suppression
Questions: to help SP fill BG space?Enhance SP encroachment into BG patches: verticut, plug planting, top dress & & pre herbicides?Follow up applications for continued BG suppression: Pro-G alone or tank mix sequence repeat?

Goose Grass Control & SP Greens RenovationComprehensive Elimination of Goose grass on greens requires control of seedlings. What are the considerations for postemergence control BEFORE greens renovation
Goose Grass Control & SP Greens RenovationElimination of Goose grass on greens requires control of seedlings. What are the considerations for postemergence control BEFORE OR AFTER greens renovation
Goose Grass Control & SP Greens Renovation – PRE Herbicides
Elimination of Goose grass BEFOR renovationMask turf recovery with mechanical injury associated renovation practices
• Requires 3-5 day post spray dry down followed by flushing to shorten SP recovery period• Greens application not currently on either Pylex or Sencor labels.• Consider foliar feed to accelerate turf green up.
Good drainage provides better control of Pylex
leaching from root zone for more rapid turf
recovery of turf green color

Goose Grass Control & SP Greens Renovation & PRE Herbicides
Andersons Goosegrass/Crabgrass Control – Granular Herbicide (28.87 lb/bag)• OK for BG greens, SP not on label (UH work = OK for SP w/irrg.)• Granular formulations, hot spots = accumulation in low areas + irrigation• UH test used 57.7 lb/a apply 2x’s 7 days apart. Irrigate immediately 15 min
Ronstar Flo – Liquid Formulation• Excellent GG pre-emergent control• Only for dormant turf due to excessive foliar damage• Spray applications preferred on greens, no hot spots• Greens not on the label - (UH work = OK for SP w/irrg.)• UH test used 30.2 oz/a 2x’s 7 days apart. Irrigate immediately 15 min.
Elimination of Goose grass BEFORE renovation
• Turf discoloration masked with anticipated post renovation injury• Preemergence herbicides applied soon after sand top dress and brush in
AGCC AT 57.7 LB/A HAS SAME A.I AS RONSTAR FLO AT 30.2 OZ/A - .75 LB OXADIAZON
Suggested wording on all herbicide labels to allow use pattern on seashore paspalum & Bermuda Gr. greens
Do not apply to warm season turf (Seashore/Bermuda grass) less that ½ inch high unless injury or removal of turf can be
tolerated
Requested wording would be published in the form of a “Special Local Need Label”

Sporobolus indicus (Smutgrass)
Goose grass + Smut Grass control in SP fairways with NO renovation
• Barricade 4FL is a liquid an 65WG is wettable granular formulation, SP on label.• Both mixed with water to spray.• Liquids use volume measure, WG needs to be weighed• Liquid formulation can hardened when stored for too long• Water soluble fertilizers used in tank mix to maintain turf green color• SP is not on Sencor label, protocol discussion to promote label change
