Subject: Child Development GCSE

Board: AQA 4580

What is the Home learning for this half term?

Year 10 students will be learning about the importance of the family, reproduction, conception, pregnancy, diet, health and care of the child and development of the child. Towards the end of Year 10 students will be completing a Research Task worth 20% of the overall marks, on one of the specified topics, for example researching how a birth plan can support new parents. In Year 11 students will undertake the Child Study worth 40% of the overall qualification. This will involve studying the development of a child over a period of six months including planning relevant activities to promote the physical, intellectual emotional and social development of the child. Finally, we will look at support for the parent and child.

Home learning tasks will be centred around independent learning on the themes above. Students will be given detailed information and occasionally worksheets to help focus their learning. The tasks may include research, short answer and extended writing tasks. When completing the Child Study, students will be expected to arrange a minimum of 5 visits to their chosen child over a period of six months. The visits should last a minimum of 30 minutes and students will be expected to have researched and prepared a suitable activity with the child so they can observe the development of the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of the child. In Year 11, students will be given a revision guide and they will be expected to supplement their class learning with additional revision in preparation for the final exam.

Home learning is set weekly by the teacher. If students are struggling to meet a deadline they must speak to their Child Development teacher, or alternatively parents can email via the contact on the school website.

What useful websites are there for independent learning?

this website is useful when researching for the Research Task controlled assessment

How will the home learning be developing student’s communication and mathematic skills?

Students will be learning key terminology specifically for the subject. Students will learn how to use the key terminology in their written responses. They will be learning how to develop their written answers especially in preparation for the 12 mark response extended questions. Students will be provided with support to help structure their written responses for example writing frames key word banks. Child Development will also offer opportunities for students to develop their mathematical skills. For example, students will analyse various quantitative resources such as statistics found when researching for the controlled assessment. Students will be learning to interpret mathematical graphs and identify trends and patterns that this information may be representing. Students will also learn how to present their information using EXCEL in either bar, line graphs or pie charts.

What learning will be taking place in Drama at Key Stage Four?

What will my child be learning in year 11 BTEC performing arts (Acting)??

How do students know how to improve their learning?

Within every lesson, students will perform their performances, either just to their teacher or to the whole class. After they have performed they will receive feedback as to how to improve the performance, which might come in the form of actual direction on some specific scenes or be questions which are put to the group. To view the assessment criteria please go onto the exam board (edexcel) website www.edexcel.com

There are different marking criteria’s for each unit and within the unit there are a number of sections each student must pass in order to gain a pass, merit or distinction. In all of the units the following basic requirements must be passed:

To take part in rehearsalsTo create a character and stay in roleTo add ideas within the performance

How will students be assessed?

The students are assessed equally between the three units. They are marked on pass©, merit (B) and distinction (A). The year 11 performances are the last chance for the students to improve upon their grades from year 10. The performances will focus on the Acting, Devising and Scripted units.

With the scripted and devising performance there is an assessment criteria which links directly to evaluating their performance – it is essential that all students do this in order to pass the unit as a whole. This may take the form of either a presentation or a written evaluation – the decision will be made by the subject teacher.

How can I help my child’s learning?

Please always ask your child what Drama work they are working on – if they are doing script work, please help them learn their lines. If they are completing the other modules, please ask them if they have any coursework which needs to be completed. If possible take them to live theatre productions, Harlow Playhouse or the Barn Theatre in Welwyn Garden City has some good shows.

Finally we will be looking at role relationships within the family and how they have changed over time.

Home learning tasks will be centred around independent learning on the themes above. Students will be given detailed information and occasionally worksheets to help focus their learning. The tasks may include research, short answer and extended writing tasks. There will be regular opportunities for students to practice answering exam style questions this will be vital to reinforce exam technique.

Home learning is set weekly by the teacher. If students are struggling to meet a deadline they must speak to their Sociology teacher, or alternatively parents can email via the contact on the school website.
