THE HISTORY OF TESCO

Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen, who in 1919 opened a market stall in East London selling surplus food stockpiles left over from the Great War. Little by little Jack expanded the business and had stalls in many markets across London. In 1924 Jack decided to trade his own goods with his own brand

name and he began with his first product which was his own label tea. Jack’s tea supplier was called T E Stockwell and the initials of both men’s names

combined to create the name Tesco. In the late 1920’s Jack opened his first store in Edgeware in London and over the last 75yrs the company has

continued to expand to the company most people recognise today.

Supermarket style shopping became more popular in Britain after the Second World War and this form of self service shopping took off in the

1960,s and continues today with great success. At the time when supermarkets became popular in the 1960’s and 70’s Tesco aimed to offer its

customers good products at cheap prices and although we were successful we decided we needed to offer more to our customers.

In the 198’,s and 90’s Tesco changed how it ran its business and refurbished its stores so they now offer our customers a pleasant shopping environment,

good availability of products, value for money and first class service We are the NO 1 supermarket in the UK
