welcome to our new look Truro Parks and Gardens Guide for 2014.

This guide has been designed to showcase the City’s wonderful open spaces and to give you information about the various events taking place. We will also be highlighting some of the really good work, plans and aspirations of our Parks Committee.

Truro City Council’s Parks department has big plans for the next ten years with projects that will significantly improve the open spaces and facilities for you the resident, commuters and visitors to the City.

Once again this year Truro has been lucky enough to be put forward to compete in the national Britain in Bloom finals as we did in 2012. Judging for the Large Town category will take place in early august and we are working very hard as a team to bring the trophy home on your behalf.

2014 is a very special year for Britain in Bloom as it is marking its 50th anniversary of the competition. Truro has been participating in both the south West in Bloom and the national Britain in Bloom competitions for well over 40 years now.

Work on the Trafalgar roundabout has now been completed and this year we will commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the start of the First World War by planting poppies there as a mark of respect to all of the fallen heroes.

Truro’s parks and gardens are there for everyone, from the meadows of daubuz Moor by the gently winding river allen, to the tennis courts and football pitches at Boscawen Park. In 2014 why not try and visit one of Truro’s green space that you have not been to before?

This is the place for sports lovers: with cricket pitches, tennis courts and football pitches, as well as a river walk with exercise equipment. If all that seems a bit too energetic, the park also has landscaped gardens bursting with floral displays in the summer, perfect for lazing the day away. It’s also a great place for dog walking, with a dedicated dog exercise area.

Boscawen Park—

Boscawen Park is in a lovely position on the banks of the Truro river about a mile outside the City Centre.

nearby is the duck pond, an area maintained with wildlife in mind and which has a lovely path around its perimeter, perfect for a relaxing stroll. Boscawen Park also hosts the national Play day event which this year is taking place in august. There is plenty to entertain both children and adults.


Victoria Gardens — Victoria Gardens were created in 1898 to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

—They are located just a few minutes walk from the City Centre and offer an oasis of green tranquillity amidst the bustle. Hidden amongst the exotic shrubs, flowers and trees, you can find waterfalls, picnic areas and playgrounds. nearby is the fountain which was originally in Boscawen street and moved to the gardens shortly after they opened.

A dominating feature of the gardens

is the viaduct that carries the main

railway line. Five piers from the

original Brunel-designed viaduct still

stand, a remnant of the structure that

was built in 1859 but replaced in 1902.

The bandstand plays host to brass band concerts in the summer – see page 9 for this year’s schedule.


royal Cornwall Museum

If you want to see an unwrapped Egyptian mummy, explorer’s medicine chest and a wide range of Cornish and British art then head to the Royal Cornwall Museum. Explore the main gallery and discover fascinating objects that tell the (condensed) story of Cornwall from 40,000BC to the present day. Here you can marvel at the Trewinnard coach, set eyes on real Cornish gold, and find out just how tall Anthony Payne, the ‘Cornish Giant’ was! There’s plenty for families to enjoy in our British Museum partnership gallery - you can build a Greek temple, have a go in our ‘Mummy Factory’ and crack ancient codes. Become an archaeologist as you play ‘Ancientopoly’, our brilliant interactive game. The natural history gallery introduces the plants, fungi and animals of Cornwall and there’s the opportunity to get up close to specimens. This gallery is particularly toddler friendly with a range of activities from puzzles and puppets to its very own seal cave.

The mineral collection at the Royal Cornwall Museum tells the story of the landscape of Cornwall and the role it has played in history. This important collection is internationally acclaimed and there are over 1200 Cornish and World specimens on display. Exhibitions for 2014 will include Amongst Heroes: the artist in working Cornwall, From Great Beginnings to the 21st Century and Terrain. The museum is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4.45pm (excluding bank holidays). Entry to the museum is free to Members of The RIC and anyone aged 18 or under. Adults pay £4.50 for an annual pass – pay once, visit for free all year.

daubuz MoorDaubuz Moor is an 18 acre site just to the north of Truro.

It was gifted to the City in 1977 by Reverend ennis and since then has been managed as a nature reserve to improve habitats for wildlife and to encourage as many animals, birds and plants as possible to make the Moor their home.

In the early 2000s, money from the Green Link Corridor Project was invested in creating log piles, brush piles, bat and bird boxes, and the Moor has hosted events, such as wildlife days and wild food walks and talks. sheep and cows used to graze the Moor, keeping the grass down, but now we mow and clear it once a year to reduce nutrients and encourage wild flowers such as rare wild orchids.

Truro is a regular entrant in the South West in Bloom contest, which aims to find the country’s most florally attractive towns and cities. It has had much success over the years including winning the prestigious Portman Cup and Gold Award annually since 2011, as well as winning Gold in the National Britain in Bloom finals in 2012.

The City is no stranger to winning silverware, which is reflected in the wonderful displays in the parks and gardens, and you can be sure that this year the Truro City Council Parks department will be putting every effort into securing another prize.

Parks development

Ten Year Plan

Our first major plan is to secure grant funding to build an education centre and new toilet facility at victoria Gardens along with improving the ground staff work area.

Looking further into the future, Truro City Council is hoping to relocate its nursery to the outskirts of the City. We are looking to be able to assist other towns and villages throughout Cornwall with an aim toward making this operation self-financing.

Over the last 12 months Truro City Council’s Parks Committee has been working to formulate a Ten Year development.

We are also working with the Friends of Boscawen Park community group set up

to raise funds to improve the play and recreational facilities down at Boscawen Park. It is hoped that work will be well underway by the end of 2014.

If this relocation is successful we hope to be able to use the space to build a multi-sports hub with astro turf pitch, running track, sports hall, indoor tennis facility, café meeting area and fitness suite. These developments will depend on grant funding but we are determined to give Truro the facilities it deserves.

Friends of

Furniss islandFurniss Island is a lovely green space in the centre of Truro, often described as a hidden gem that once housed the Furniss Biscuit Factory.

Friends of Furniss Island is a group of local residents that have turned this unloved patch into a wonderful garden with the help of Cornish Biscuits, Truro City Council, Cornwall rural Council and Green Walks Truro.

The group put on community events and activities as well as maintaining the green space for all to enjoy.

If you haven’t taken the time to discover Furniss Island, make sure you do. It’s perfect for a quiet picnic lunch or an afternoon read.

Friends of

Boscawen ParkFriends of Boscawen Park are a community group set up to raise funds to improve the play and recreational facilities down at Boscawen Park.

Over the past 12 months the group has been busy running fun days, consultation sessions and cake sales, and they now have plans ready to submit.

The exciting new designs include areas of natural play and brand new fixed equipment.

The group are now working hard, applying for available grants to help them realise their dream. It is hoped that new equipment will be installed by the end of 2014.

“We want to create an exciting, interesting environment for children of all ages using a combination of natural play equipment and fun activities.

“We have a Facebook page where you can find out more about us, our plans and visions for the park.

We would really love you to get involved.”
