Wootton Primary School, Year 1 Overview
Spring 2
24th February– 3rd April
Science
This half term in science we will be looking at seasons.
To start with we will continue our work on trees. We will look at how the trees change according to the seasons and why. We will also look at how the plants we see change throughout the year. We will be carrying out some planting and ex-ploring why we can only plant at certain times of the year. The chil-dren will experiment on how season-al changes effect plant growth. The children will build on their sci-entific knowledge on how to con-duct a fair test and how to repre-sent findings.
English
This half term in literacy, the children will be looking at the story
of the 3 little pigs. To begin with we will be looking at the tradi-
tional version of the story. The children will learn the story using
actions and will rehearse story telling with their peers.
The children will be planning and writing an innovated version of
The 3 little pigs. They will be changing 2 key aspects of the story to
make it there own.
We will then be moving on to looking at the alternative version of
the three little pigs. The children will begin to look at the different
perspectives of characters and how they may be different. This
will be linked to newspaper articles.
To end the half term, the children will be creating a newspaper
article on the story of the three little pigs from either the pigs or
the wolf’s point of view. We will spend time looking into the
different features of newspaper articles and their purpose.
Maths
To begin this half term we will be continuing our
work on multiplication. The children will be using
arrays to understand the foundation of multiplica-
tion. The children will begin by practically drawing
out arrays to solve simple multiplication prob-
lems. We will then develop this into using arrays
effectively and independently to problem solve.
We will then be moving on to looking at measuring
and comparing the mass of different objects. This
will be taught in a very practical and hands on
way, with the children actively measuring the mass
of different objects. From this we will more onto
looking at capacity. Comparing full, empty, more
than and less than.
The children will then look at shape. We will revisit
2d shapes before continuing on to 3d shapes such
as cuboids, cubes, pyramids and spheres.
History
In history we are going to be focusing on our local area Wootton. We will look closely
at how Wootton has changed over time, particularly in terms of farming and land
use. The children will make comparisons between Wootton today and what Wootton
was like many years ago.
To end this topic, we will be going on a walk of the local area.
Computing
In computing, the children are going to start exploring how
computer devices can be used to store and sort information.
We will then be going on to learn how computers can be
used to generate graphs and pictograms.
Art and design technology
In design technology this half term we are going to looking at
different materials used for sculpture. The children will ex-
plore the properties of different materials and evaluate their
effectiveness when creating a sculpture.
We will be looking at the artist Antony Gormley. We will
look at the sculptures he created and then create our own
version. We will link our sculpture to our work in history.
P.E
In PE this half term the children will be taking part in a variety of multi skill activities.
These will involve developing catching and throwing skills using different size and
shaped balls. The children will also work on co-operative and competitive games using a
parachute.
Music
We will be learning the song ‘Round and round’. The children will use instruments and
their voices to respond to different starting points.
PSHE
Our topic in PSHE this term will be ‘Healthy Me’. The children to learn how to keep them-
selves healthy both physically and mentally. We will do lots of discussion around mental
well-being.
