EDITORIAL

Welcome to the September issue of The Link. We trust that everyone has had a good summer.

Farmers countrywide will have been able to harvest early this year, but there are many real problems now as a result of the incredibly long and hot summer we have experienced, following on from a long, wet and cold winter! Remember the Beast from the East, etc?

There are, within these pages, many reports of events and activities that have taken place over recent weeks; if you have news or information to share within the parish please do let us have details and we will continue to ‘broadcast’ the details for you.

Remember, a copy of The Link is delivered to every household within the parish (and some beyond).

FROM THE VICARAGE

On Your Bike! It was Norman Tebbitt who famously DIDN’T introduce this phrase to the English language – but like many before and since, he became the victim of a tabloid press misquote, and the rest is history.

In the aftermath of the 1981 riots in Handsworth and Brixton, Tebbit, as Employment Secretary, responded to a suggestion that rioting was the natural reaction to unemployment, saying, “I grew up in the '30s with an unemployed father. He didn't riot. He got on his bike and looked for work, and he kept looking till he found it.” But why let fact get in the way of a good headline!

I’m not unemployed, but I’m still going to get on my bike and try and raise some money both for All Saints’ Church and for the Warwickshire & Coventry Historic Churches Trust, by taking part in the annual ‘Ride and Stride’ event on Saturday, 8 September. I haven’t finalised my route yet, but I plan to visit at least 20 churches within the Kenilworth and Coventry South Deanery areas, covering somewhere around 35 to 45 miles – so quite a bit of effort involved, especially if the weather is unkind. If anyone wants to join me on the ride, please get in touch.

Will you help me by giving the encouragement of a little sponsorship? 50% of all sponsorship will support All Saints’ and help with the upkeep of the building, which is so much a part of the community. The rest of the funds raised will be used by WCHCT to give grants to other historic church buildings in Warwickshire and Coventry.

There will be a sponsor form available in the church porch, or you can drop an envelope through the Vicarage letterbox, but the easiest way is to donate online via ‘JustGiving’ www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jim-perryman and if you can Gift Aid, that’s even better.

Of course, the cyclists on the Tour of Britain (including Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas) who will be passing through Leek Wootton on Wednesday, 5 September, soon after midday, would consider 40 miles a mere warm-up, so do get out and encourage them on their way with a cheer or two – but don’t worry, they’re not after your money ☺.

Next MU MEETING Thursday, 13 September, 1:30pm at 11 Rounds Hill, Kenilworth. Our theme will be MU Updates and News.

MU News Mothers’ Union members all over the country (and beyond) are ‘Breaking down the Barriers’, reaching out to refugees and asylum seekers with many types of help, including teaching English and providing vital basics for displaced families. In our area:

Coventry has contacts with the Refugee and Asylum Seekers Centre and a very active and growing local charity, Carriers of Hope. MU supports and promotes their wide-ranging work, collecting and distributing anything and everything to fill empty properties when families are found a home. They also distribute bags of necessities to new mothers.

Mothers’ Union Warwick To9ether (MUWT) heard of the imminent arrival of Syrian refugee families under the Government resettlement scheme

and, with Churches Together in Warwick, collected household cleaning packs for each of the five families.

Amongst the group are men who have great skills as bakers and chefs; however, when completing forms for Food Hygiene and Health & Safety, they have been given negative feedback for written English. Without certificates they cannot even volunteer their skills, so integration is a slow process. The gratitude of the families for all that the UK has afforded them, not least the chance of education for their children, is matched by their generous hospitality and joy at entertaining a visitor.

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL MATTERS Parish Partner : Mary Robins t : 512643

I have come across an intriguing story of the link between Stalingrad - now Volgograd - and Coventry and how the 'twinning' of the two cities came about through the Cross of Nails. Again, I am borrowing from an article by Martin Williams, Chairman of the Friends.

The Missing Cross of Nails Dean John Witcombe visited Volgograd this year as an official guest at the celebrations of the 75th Anniversary of 'Victory in the Battle of Stalingrad'. It was known that there was a Cross of Nails somewhere in the city, but it was no longer in Kazan Cathedral. Then Dean John discovered its whereabouts, in the Museum of the Battle of Stalingrad, hanging next to a photo of the Cathedral ruins and some WWII guns. The Cross had been given in return for a significant gift sent to the Lord Mayor of Coventry, Pearl Hyde (I remember her well) in 1958.

That year Alderman Hyde received a parcel, which contained an Icon, but there was no message to explain where it came from. She presumed it must be from the Patriarch of Moscow and handed the Icon to Bishop Cuthbert Bardsley (many readers will remember him too) and Provost Bill Williams.

It was realised that earlier in 1958 there had been a formal visit to Coventry Cathedral by the Russian Ambassador and that it followed another gift sent by Dr Konrad Adenauer, then Chancellor of West Germany. Bishop Bardsley said, "It shows the way towards Christian Charity and the way towards true Christian peace."

The inscription on the reverse of the Icon, translated from Russian, read, "To commemorate the friendship and sympathy for Coventry's martyrdom during the war against Fascism 1941 - 1945. To Coventry Cathedral from Stalingrad Cathedral". … more of the connection between these two cities in next month's LINK.

LEEK WOOTTON & GUY’S CLIFFE PARISH COUNCIL Clerk to the Parish Council : Helen Eldridge t : 853841

The Parish Council (PC) does not meet in August, but its work continues.

CAT FOULING INCIDENT IN THE HAMLET The PC has been contacted by residents who had a carrier bag of cat faeces left on their doorstep. The residents’ assumption is that this act was an accusation that the waste was left by their pet, despite the fact that they do not own a cat.

The PC cannot become involved in neighbourhood disputes but, this is an unpleasant act and, whilst the PC understands the frustration of animal waste, it would recommend restraint with such issues.

Advice from the Police Safer Neighbourhoods Team is that the incident is not an offence, but they would advise residents to contact them if a similar incident occurs, in case it is the start of some anti-social behaviour that they need to look into. (Their contact information is t: 101 / e: [email protected] / twitter: @WarwickCops)

TRAFFIC DIVERSION W/C 23 JULY The PC was advised that Rouncil Lane was to be closed and traffic diverted down Woodcote Lane by a resident of Rouncil Lane a fortnight before the work was due to begin. The PC was concerned that it had not been advised directly and contacted Warwickshire County Council Highways to explore alternatives to the temporary lifting of the weight restriction through Leek Wootton. The Chairman had a site visit with the Planned Works Engineer, but unfortunately, following discussion, it was obvious that there was no suitable alternative. As a result of the closure, temporary traffic lights were installed at the Woodcote Lane/Warwick Road junction for the duration of the works, to assist vehicles exiting Woodcote Lane. The traffic lights were in situ for a week and this gave Councillors an opportunity to observe the performance of lights and traffic on this difficult junction. The 7.5T weight restriction is now back in place.

BATTLE’S OVER BEACON LIGHTING The PC is working with The Warwickshire Golf & Country Club to hold a beacon lighting ceremony on the night of Remembrance Day (Sunday, 11 November) [read more on page 31]. The beacon bonfire will be built during the week prior to 11 November and those wishing to donate suitable dry wood should contact the Clerk. The PC would also be grateful for volunteers to help build the beacon. Please contact the Clerk on the above email.

LITTER & DOG WASTE BINS After the success of replacing 7 dog waste bins with larger, dual use bins in 2017, the PC has obtained a replacement bin for the damaged Warwick District Council bin in the layby (by permission) and a larger bin for the one on the Rec,

Page 12: All Saints’ Church Parish Magazine LEEK WOOTTON LINK · The Vicarage, 4 Hill Wootton Road e : vicar@leekwoottonchurch.co.uk Church Wardens Jonathan Kingston t : 851181 32 Hill Wootton

at the end of the footpath to Waller Close, which has historically been prone to overflow. The smaller bin from this location will be moved to the southbound bus stop to replace the open bin.

The new bins have now been delivered and installation will take place during late August/early September.

VOLUNTEER TASK FORCE Three of the Volunteer Task Force days have taken place so far and work has been undertaken in the children’s playground and around both bus stops. The PC would like to thank those members of the community who have supported this initiative.

There are a number of other jobs that need to be undertaken throughout the community and if you have identified an issue that you think the task force could look at, please contact the Clerk on the above email.

If you would like to take part, the task force days will continue into September on Saturdays 8 & 22 at 9:30am. Please contact the Clerk or any Councillor to find out where the task force will be working, or check the parish online calendar at www.leekwoottonandguyscliffe.org.uk/index.php/community-calendar.

NEXT MEETING: The next meeting of the Parish Council will take place at 7:30pm on Tuesday, 4 September 2018, at Leek Wootton Village Hall.

DOG WASTE Whilst walking my dog the other day, I had the misfortune to skid on dog waste left on the Recreation Ground. It is evident that the issue is not improving, despite the majority of responsible dog owners in the community making good use of the bins provided by the Parish Council. Dog waste and abandoned bags have been witnessed on the Rec, pavements, the Tink-a-Tank and other footpaths and on The Warwickshire’s land. One day I came across 3 individual ‘piles’ within an area of some 10 sq ft in the churchyard; it’s inconsiderate enough to leave a ‘pile’ in the path of other walkers, adults and children, but to leave them in the churchyard; a consecrated place of peace and remembrance, is totally unacceptable and on this occasion we removed them.

The Fouling of Land by Dogs (Warwick District Council) Order 2011 requires owners to remove faeces deposited by their dog from any land to which the public has access in Warwick District and which is open to the air (including land which is covered, but open to the air on at least one side). Persons contravening the Order may be prosecuted through the courts [maximum fine £1,000] or given a fixed penalty charge.

As Clerk I am exploring initiatives that may be supported by the WDC Dog Warden to tackle this problem, but the support of like-minded people who do not want to see this nuisance would be much appreciated. Any ideas would be gratefully received and my contact details are given above.

Incidents of fouling can be reported online at: www.warwickdc.gov.uk/forms/form/46/report_dogs_fouling

Change afoot at the Anchor Things have changed this summer at the heart of Leek Wootton – Sean Rouse has taken a ten-year lease on The Anchor and wants to welcome everyone to the pub.

There is a new sign, a new menu, new ice cream and the ‘partition’ in the bar has gone!

Sean said, “Please, come along and give us a try.”

The eagle has landed… in Hill Wootton An eagle with a 7ft wingspan went missing from Warwick Castle in late June. Nikita, a white stellar sea eagle, disappeared after completing the 12:30pm bird of prey show on Tuesday, 26 June.

She was found in Hill Wootton at 11:00am on the morning of Thursday, 28 June.

Nikita has been at Warwick Castle since 2004 and although she has wandered away once before, she normally returns within 10 to 15 minutes.

The castle’s birds of prey handler, Chris O’Donnell, said when she went missing that she was most likely to be seen sitting in an open field and that she posed no risk to animals or the public.

A Facebook appeal was shared hundreds of times, with some leaving comments for her safe return.

Warwickshire Police confirmed on Twitter: "The lost eagle from Warwick Castle has been found safe and well and is being reunited with her boyfriend - happy ending!"

What a surprise treat for our talk in July. We had been looking forward to a talk by a visiting speaker on Antique Glass, but these arrangements fell through. Our very own member, Roger Cragg gave his first talk to our Probus in 1992 and Roger stepped into the breach again with his twelfth talk to us – his first as an active member. Roger talked about the Elan Valley Aqueduct, which brings drinking water by gravity some 73 miles from the Elan Valley into the Frankley Reservoir in Birmingham. Roger took us through the very far-sighted proposals and enabling legislation, the technical challenges and the construction solutions – all first implemented between 1896 and 1906/8. Commissioned with two 40” pipes, it now has two more 60” pipes and is just reaching the planned capacity.

Congratulations Eileen and Norman Clayton celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on 12 July.

We would like to send our hearty congratulations to accompany those sent by HM The Queen.

MYTON HOSPICE & MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT

Super Cars Sunday Tom Commander writes: “Super Cars Sunday [Sunday, 1 July] was great fun; we made £2,070 and, just to prove we did actually hand over the cash to Myton Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support and didn't go on holiday on the proceeds, I attach a photo of the cheque presentation.

Thanks again to all who came this year and had a super day. I really hope we can muster twice as many cars (50+) in 2019 and make twice as much money! NEXT YEAR … bit provisional, but pencil in 25 August 2019.”

What an interesting and rather inspiring speaker we had at the Macmillan Summer Lunch on 18 June. Heidi Meyer, the first female Master of the Lord Leycester Hospital brought along artefacts, including an original silver badge, which would have been presented to an original Brother by Queen Elizabeth I; Edw Falknor’s name was engraved on the reverse. Heidi also shared her vision for the future of the organisation and talked about the first of the new, younger Brothers, who is a veteran of the conflict in Afghanistan and was severely injured in the line of duty. The lunch made £1,500 for Macmillan.

Travelling We all do a lot of travelling for many different reasons, but do we stop and think about what we are doing to the environment as we travel? Here are some thoughts about the positives and negatives of some different forms of transport and a table showing some information about carbon dioxide emissions.

Walking + Great for your health if you are not having to walk in high air pollution.

+ No greenhouse gas emissions except those involved in manufacturing of shoes.

- Only suitable if short distances are involved.

- Some people are not physically able to manage even short distances.

- There is a limit to the amount that can be carried.

Cycling + Great for your health if you are not cycling in high air pollution.

+ No greenhouse gas emissions except those involved in manufacturing the bike and accessories.

- Only suitable if relatively short distances are involved.

- Some people are unable to cycle.

- There is a limit to the amount that can be carried.

- Other traffic on the roads can make it dangerous in some places.

Public transport - bus and train + The transport will run anyway so you are not increasing the amount of

greenhouse gases.

- Timetables are limited and so you may have to adapt plans to fit them.

Non electric car + Convenient for travelling at a time of your choosing to place of your

choosing.

- Lots of greenhouse and other polluting gases emitted.

Electric car + Convenient for travelling at a time of your choosing to place of your

choosing.

+ No greenhouse gas and other air pollution in the place where you are driving.

- Journey length is limited by battery charge.

- If electricity is made with gas, oil or coal, then there are still greenhouse gases emitted and other air pollution at the power station.

End of term Scottish Dancing! This was our last meeting before the summer break, so we asked Margaret Baker and some of her dancers to come along and show us some traditional Scottish country dances. We learnt that there are five main types of Scottish dancing, the reel, the jig, the polka, the strathspey and the waltz.

Margaret explained that perhaps the cold weather had influenced the evolution of dancing in Scotland as a means of keeping warm … but essentially as people of all ages are able to participate, this has meant that the popularity of Scottish dancing is not confined to Scotland, but exists all over the world.

Written material on Scottish dancing dates back to the 1700s. Over time, particular styles have evolved and many geographical areas of Scotland have their own unique dance variations. It is commonly accepted that the Reel is the only truly indigenous dance to Scotland. This was a dance for three or more people where steps were danced on the spot alternating with everyone doing usually the same travelling step around in a circle or in a figure of 8.

Margaret talked us through the history of Scottish dancing and then 8 members of her regular dance group performed a number of traditional Scottish dances. Needless to say we were then eager to have a go ourselves – we initially went the wrong way and lost the beat on more than one occasion – but under Margaret's careful instruction we were soon performing recognisable Scottish dances.

We had a huge amount of fun, and as they say, ‘When you dance it cannot fail to bring a smile to your face’. Indeed we all went home truly beaming!

Warwickshire Scouts attending the 24th Jamboree – UPDATE Since our St George’s Day tea in April the participants and leaders have been busy, both training and fundraising.

In July we camped at Beau Desert for our second training weekend. The heat was good preparation for America and the date lent itself to an Independence Day party. The participants practised traditional Scouting skills such as tent pitching, making pegs, using axes and 2-man saws. They also learned to look after themselves for three weeks away from home without Mum: cooking meals for forty, including food hygiene, and handwashing their clothes.

We now have our UK neckers and unit badges, which helps make us feel like one unit despite coming from all over Warwickshire. We have souvenir badges to sell too.

Thank you to all who have supported us, whether through personal donations or by attending the tea, table top sale or car wash. Many thanks too, to the Leek Wootton Cubs and Beavers who walked from Kenilworth Castle to the Village Hall and then sold cakes to raise funds.

The leaders and participants are available to talk to local groups about the forthcoming trip. We have been provided with some materials to support this, including a lovely Mexican sombrero, because the Jamboree is being hosted by the Boy Scouts of America, Canada and Mexico.

To recognise our Mexican hosts our next fund raiser will be a ‘Day of the Dead’ Masked Ball on Friday, 2 November at the Holiday Inn in Kenilworth.

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos in Spanish) is a Mexican celebration of dead ancestors coinciding with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, but is about 3,000 years old with the emphasis on celebration.

For more details and tickets please contact Lesley Knott (t: 0796 381 5773 / e: [email protected]) or ask any of the Kenilworth Jamboree participants.

ADVANCE NOTICE:

BATTLE’S OVER: A Nation’s Tribute On 11 November 2018, the United Kingdom and its friends overseas will mark the day 100 years ago when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War and Leek Wootton & Guy’s Cliffe Parish Council will be taking part, in partnership with All Saints’ Church and The Warwickshire Golf & Country Club.

ARMISTICE DAY, REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY & POPPIES After four years of war, the Armistice was signed on the morning of 11 November 1918 and a cease-fire came into effect at 11:00am. A year later, on 11 November 1919, the Queen’s grandfather, King George V asked the public to observe a two-minute silence and asked that, "… the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead".

World War I left approximately 16 million people, military and civilian, dead and around 37 million casualties. It was an unprecedented loss of life that affected every community in those countries that were involved and the first Armistice Day, to remember those that had died, received overwhelming public support.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month has been remembered every year since with a two-minute silence and Remembrance services are also held on the nearest Sunday, including the ceremony at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, when all who have died in conflict are remembered.

The tradition of wearing poppies originates with the poem On Flanders Field written by Lt Col John McCrae in 1915, and the lines, “If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields”. In 1918 Moina Michael, an American professor vowed to always wear a poppy as a symbol of Remembrance for those who served in the war and sold silk poppies to raise funds to support disabled veterans at the University of Georgia. Inspired by her campaign, in 1921 the newly formed British Legion took on the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.

In 2018 the 100th anniversary of the Armistice falls on a Sunday and commemorative events will be held nationwide to pay tribute to the millions killed or wounded in battle, and those on the home front who struggled amidst pain and loss to help ensure freedom survived. Leek Wootton & Guy’s Cliffe will be taking part in the nationwide act of Remembrance, which will involve:

18.55: The Last Post: 1000 individual Buglers will sound this historic tribute at WW1 Beacons of Light locations across the Nation and UK Overseas Territories.

19.00: WW1 Beacons of Light: Over 1000 Beacons of Light, symbolising an end to the darkness of war and a return to the light of Peace, will be lit.

19.05: Ringing Out for Peace: 1000 Cathedrals and Churches will ring out their bells across the nation, and beyond, in celebration of Peace.

All Saints’ Church will hold its usual Remembrance Sunday service and Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial Recreation Ground stone, as well as a special evening service before the Last Post and Beacon of Light and more information about this will follow in future issues of The Link.

100 years ago, from 26 September to 11 November, the WWI Meuse-Argonne Offensive took place in France. It was the last major battle of WWI and the American Expeditionary Force’s largest and bloodiest operation of the war. Allied victory.

90 years ago, on 28 September 1928, the use of cannabis was made illegal in the UK. (Medical use of cannabis was made illegal in 1973.)

80 years ago, on 30 September 1938, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned to England in triumph after signing the Munich Agreement, declaring there would be “peace in our time”.

40 years ago, on 8 Sep 1978, the Black Friday of the Iranian Revolution took place. Thousands of protestors gathered in Jaleh Square, Tehran, and ignored calls to disperse. The Imperial Army opened fire and foreign

journalists estimated that up to 4,000 people were killed. This was the pivotal event in the Iranian Revolution, and marked the beginning of the end of the Shah’s regime.

30 years ago, on 6 September 1988, 11-year-old British boy Thomas Gregory became the youngest person to swim the English Channel.

20 years ago, on 4 September 1998, Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, both students at Stanford University in California. The company was initially based in a friend’s garage in Menlo Park.

10 years ago, on 7 September 2008 the Financial Crisis was underway. The troubled US mortgage-financing giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were placed into government conservatorship, under the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

ALL IN THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER

What did we do before Google? Google, the internet search company, was founded 20 years ago this month by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, both students at Stanford University in California. The company was initially based in a friend’s garage. The friend, Susan Wojcicki, is now CEO of YouTube.

The company developed from an idea for an innovative search engine originally called Backrub, which outshone early competitors. Eventually its use became so ubiquitous that the word “google” is now often used to mean search on a computer.

The name Google is a play on the mathematical expression for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. It reflects the founders’ mission ‘to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.’

The company’s huge campus, Googleplex, is a tourist destination in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is regarded as an ideal employee-friendly workplace. The company employs over 60,000 people.

Universities can mistake ‘loneliness for depression’ Many young people who have just left home for university will be lonely. That is a normal emotion of young adults and it is certainly not a medical condition.

So says a leading professor of psychiatry at King’s College London, who advises universities not to make the current mental health crisis worse by assuming that all sad students are depressed. He urged universities to stop throwing money at various ‘untested’ mental health initiatives.

Instead, Sir Simon Wessely said: ‘Loneliness is a major problem for the student population … but there is quite a lot of evidence to say that the solution may not be to see a counsellor, but maybe to join a choir.’ He advised that the best way to protect against mental health problems was to draw on active social networks. Having friends who they can confide in is ‘probably better’ for students than seeking professional help.

The Way We Were…

The Elms Reflecting again this month on earlier changes in the parish, the pictures below from the History Group’s archive, reveal two stages of development: The west wall of The Elms farmhouse (right) was

alongside the Warwick Road with a gate and then a barn to its north. Between the barn and the boundary wall of Leek Wootton House was a row of cottages (left) and it was along this stretch that two bungalows and two detached houses were built.

The life of The Elms farm continued with modern barns, stable yard and a timber-clad bungalow to the south of the site and from the aerial photograph (right) it is really quite easy to see how the properties in The Elms were planned in the 1980s, with the original farm entrance creating the current road.

The Edgar family of Elms Farm developed Rio Grande, Elms Farm, on Hill Wootton Road and is still based there today.

It is a pleasure to be able to introduce myself as Co-ordinator for the ‘Hill Wootton Scheme’, which I have been running successfully for 12 years.

Whilst quite a number of readers/residents are aware of my presence, new members are warmly welcome to join our network with a view to preventing crime.

I operate on an e-mail basis (and telephone if needs be) with updates and newsletters from our local SNT and generally on a ‘as and when’ basis, should a situation arise within the locality.

I also keep a watchful eye on local news and incidents via press updates and in turn pass any relevant information onto my subscribers so they are aware and can note accordingly.

It is good that I am able to contribute to our Parish Magazine as I can include local news and information that may be of help in keeping ourselves and our homes safe and free from crime.

I won’t state the obvious as most people know it makes sense to lock up their homes/cars/garages/outbuildings, and I am keen to ensure we know what’s going on and that we can, together, keep one another posted on anything of interest/concern:

August 2018: A telephone scam claiming to be from HMRC making demands for payment with the threat of prosecution for non-payment of tax, was reported locally. Often, the victims are receiving a second call a few days later. Note that HMRC never ring people in this manner, nor ask for personal details over the phone, so it is advised to hang up and report the matter to the police on 101 or to Action Fraud on 0300-123-2040.

Similarly, we ourselves were targeted, receiving a number of calls from what was apparently BT wishing to update our contract. We became suspicious as they asked us questions you would assume BT would already know the answer to. On the last call, we suggested they ‘were fraudsters, operating a scam’ and they hung up swiftly. BT subsequently confirmed our suspicions that this was clearly the case!

Unfortunately, it is also reported that during early August a number of Warwick residents were the subject of vehicle crime. In most instances the car windscreens had been smashed and in one case an item was stolen.

Please let me know if you wish to receive our Newsletter from the SNT along with any alerts that are reported to me from subscribers of the Neighbourhood Watch network I run here in Hill Wootton to include Leek Wootton and nearby districts.

You are most welcome to join in, if you are not already within a scheme.

I may be contacted on 07770-664790 or by e-mail on [email protected].

Thank you for reading my first article.

Have you got lots of apples that you don't know

what to do with? I have a fruit scratter (grater) and press for making apple juice. I am happy for others to make use of it too. You would need to bring your apples and container(s) to take the juice away. A bucketful of apples could give about 4 pints of juice depending on the variety. I assume that pears would work as well.

You could then enjoy your fresh juice immediately, freeze the juice in suitable quantities or pasteurise it to keep for up to 2 years. Alternatively you could find out about making your own cider.

If you are interested please contact me to arrange a suitable time to do this. Accompanied children are welcome to come and have a go too.
