Born and raised in Woodside,Council Member McCaffrey servedthe 26th District from 1985 to 2001and played a pivotal role in im-proving the quality of life for resi-dents within Western Queens.

During his tenure, CouncilMember McCaffrey served as theCouncil’s Chair of Zoning andFranchises Subcommittee, andserved on the Land Use, Finance,Public Safety and Transportationcommittees. Before being electedto the New York City Council, heserved as Chair of CommunityBoard 2 and began his career inpolitics as Chief of Staff to Man-hattan Borough President AndrewStein as well as the late Congress-man Thomas Manton.

Council Member McCaffreywrote landmark legislation requir-ing security cameras at ATM’s andrestricting ATM surcharge fees, and was the lead sponsor of legis-lation banning or restricting adultestablishments from residentialneighborhoods and school areas.

“The dedication of WalterMcCaffrey Place is a fitting tributeto a selfless public servant whowas synonymous with theWoodside community,” said Rep.Joe Crowley (D-Queens, theBronx). “Walter fought for thepeople of Queens with great pas-sion, leaving behind a legacy ofadvocacy and accomplishment thatimproved the lives of middle classfamilies across the city. I was proudto call him a friend and I’m thrilledour community is able to show ourappreciation for Walter with thisstreet co-naming.”

“Walter McCaffrey was an elo-quent and effective leader in theNew York City Council,” saidQueens Borough PresidentMelinda Katz. “He will be missedfor his substantive contributionsand for his tireless dedication toour great borough of Queens.”

“Walter McCaffrey was not onlya great mentor but more importanthe was a friend” said Assembly-woman Catherine Nolan. “His con-tributions to our community includeparks, schools and talking care ofour seniors. His legacy is the caringhe had for our community.”

“This permanent marker forWalter McCaffery is a fitting trib-ute to an outstanding communityleader and public official,” saidAssemblywoman MargaretMarkey. “Walter loved the worldof government, he loved the worldof politics and organizing cam-paigns, and he loved Woodside. Iam delighted to join in this cer-emony to honor him.”

“Walter McCaffrey was a greatman, a great legislator, and a greatlover of Woodside and all of west-ern Queens,” said AssemblymanMichael DenDekker. “I can’t thinkof anyone who deserves this honormore than Councilman McCaffrey, and I am honored to have knownhim and be a part of this ceremony.”

“Walter McCaffrey was one ofthe first political leaders I met whenI first got involved in public affairsand he was an instrumental guide inmy early years of political involve-ment,” said State Senator MichaelGianaris. “Walter’s intelligence andsharp wit made him a pleasure towork with as well as an effectiverepresentative. As our communitycontinues to cope with the loss of afriend, colleague, and neighbor, thededication of Walter McCaffreyPlace will help us heal and ensure

all the good Walter did for ourneighborhood will not be forgot-ten. May his memory be eternal.”

The late Council Member wasalso a tremendous supporter of lo-cal community organizations whichstill continue to provide qualityservices and programming to localresidents within Western Queens.

“Council Member WalterMcCaffrey was supportive ofSunnyside Community Services(SCS) in so many ways,” said

Judy Zangwill, Executive Direc-tor, Sunnyside Community Ser-vices. “One of the most notabledisplays was the SCS Center forActive Older Adults which servesas a second home for over 200seniors each weekday. We wouldnot be able to welcome so manypeople, were it not for CouncilMember McCaffrey, who was in-strumental in enabling us to buildthis Center. We are very gratefulto Council Majority Leader Jimmy

Van Bramer and CommunityBoard 2 for honoring his tremen-dous legacy.”

“Council Member McCaffreywas a strong supporter of WoodsideOn The Move’s programs, and itsmission to serve community resi-dents,” said Adrian Bordoni, Ex-ecutive Director of Woodside onthe Move. “It is very fitting that wehonor his life and contribution toWoodside by renaming 61st Streetand Woodside Avenue in his honor.”

Mature London Plane FallsAcross 39th Avenueby Mary Caulfield

Fireman on Engine 325 powered uptheir saw at about 7:15 am on May 14thand cut up a tree that had fallen. In no timethey had reduced an 80-year-old tree to apile of sawn logs.

A longtime Phipps Garden Apartmentsemployee said the staff had called the city inrecent days, alarmed at the widening anglebetween the tree and Phipps’ red brick build-ings. “It was lifting up the sidewalk moreeveryday” he said. “I knew something badwas going to happen soon.”

Nearby residents heard a roar for severalseconds. It was the sound of thousands of raindrenched new leaves sweeping through hu-mid air. Because the tree’s canopy was so fullthe trunk didn’t hit the ground. Only one outerbranch landed on a car but caused no damage.

Parks Department inspector Fernando

Argo, arrived on scene at 8:50 a.m. Heexamined the sawn remains. He said, “Thatwas a healthy tree.” He noted that althoughthe upper branches had some “hollowing”the trunk was solid.

He suspected a relatively new block ofconcrete between the tree and the buildingsignaled the reason for the fall. “The cementcontractor cut the roots” to flatten the side-walk, he said. London Planes typicallybuckle sidewalks but, “You can’t cut a tree’sfeet” and expect it to stand.

He said the trees, which line thestreets of Sunnyside Gardens, werewidely planted for years because “theytolerate the kind of abuse” trees arelikely to experience in a highly devel-oped city environment.

They can endure a lot, he said, but not iftheir roots are cut.
