That’s because pantries of- ten can buy bulk quantities of food from food banks at steep discounts. For ex- ample, a box of cereal can cost about $2.50. But the food pantries pay about 20 cents for a 1-pound box of cereal, Soldana said. “I know it’s a lot to ask people to give monetary donations right now, but we can stretch that dollar a lot further when buying food,” Every penny raised is donated equality to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Teresa and St. Raphael Food pantry. Food is given to all people in need regardless of race, creed or reli- gion. And all money raised stays in our community. We welcome all funds from dollars to pennies. Most important, we are grateful for our neighbors help and support. Giving to a fam- ily in need will make your holiday a little more special knowing you helped give a holi- day dinner to a family in your neighborhood! We are one of the largest commu- nity-service organizations dedicated pri- marily to helping the children of the world, with 600,000 adult and youth members in 8,400 clubs and more than 96 countries worldwide. Kiwanians are ordinary people who perform extraordi- nary “hands on” work. Our 270,000 adult members annually invest more than 6 million hours and $100 million in projects. Their purpose is to make Sunnyside a better community. That’s why each year they raise thousands of dollars - and use all of it to provide a long list of service projects and in sup- port of many good causes. It’s a service club, and these people do these things week after week because they want to. The members of the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside work together and achieve what one person cannot acomplish alone. The focus is to make Sunnyside a better community to live and work. Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Chair of the U.S. Congress Joint EconomicCommittee (JEC), released the following statement on the Bureau of Labor Statistics’October jobs report showing that the unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.6 percent and151,000 total nonfarm jobs were added:

“With Tuesday, Nov. 2nd elections, the numbers in Congress have changed, but the toppriority for Congress should not. We must remain focused on creating jobs, so that the 14.8million Americans who remain out of work, can find work.

“As this latest jobs report shows, we are making steady progress, and our economy isin better shape than a year ago. The policies put in place during the past two years havestrengthened our economy and laid the foundation for future growth. We now have tenstraight months of private sector job gains, and for the first time since May, the economysaw an increase in total nonfarm jobs. This October, we added 159,000 private sector jobs, compared to losing 262,000 private sector jobs last October.

“But, we still have work to do. Two days ago, the Federal Reserve announced its much-anticipated action to strengthen the economy. Congress, too, must keep its focus on policiesthat will boost employment, prepare workers for new jobs and help to bring down theunemployment rate.

“In the coming days and weeks, there should and will be attention focused on actionsrequired to bring down the deficit. But we must not let consideration of deficit issues crowdout job-creating policies and investments that are still needed. In the upcoming lame-ducksession, I look forward to Republicans offering their ideas and proposals on how to createjobs and boost growth. The Democrats have done the heavy lifting so far, it’s time for theRepublicans to move beyond “no” and join us in the solutions business.”

Thank you to

Military that

country the land

We honor your commitment and sacrifice.

Boggle Helps TeensImprove Their Vocabulary

Sorry we missed you...

This photo that appeared in last week’s edition had the last name of the woman on the far right cutoff. Her name is Yolonda Fee and she has been a member for over 42 years. Our apologies Yolonda.

VFW Post 2813 Ladies Auxiliary Sends Care Boxes to Soldiers Overseas

By Shannon Carlin

With only a week to go until the QueensLibrary Teen Boggle Tournament, theSunnyside team was holed away in a sideroom of their local library. All five members, who ranged from 13 to 15 years old, werewaiting anxiously to hear their final scores.

For five weeks, the teens had been meet-ing at least one day after school to practicefor the November 2nd finals. Though most ofthe teens had never played Boggle before,by this point they were taking things prettyseriously. There was even the occasionalshouting over questionable scoring.

Abigail Goldberg, the team’s mentorand Sunnyside’s Senior Librarian, hadseen vast improvements. Not just in theirteamwork but in their ability to makewords. Goldberg had even learned somethings herself.

“The teens spelled ‘lan.’ I insisted ‘lan’was not a word. They were sure it was,”Goldberg explains. “We looked it up andthey were right! It is ‘Local Area Network.’This taught me that I should always refer tothe dictionary.”

This was Vikki Terrile’s hope whenshe started the Boggle tournament, aQueens wide competition that includedsix teams from Arverne, Briarwood, Flush-

ing, Lefrak City, Pomonok and Sunnyside. With recent drops in State test scores, shewanted to find a fun way to get teensworking on their vocabulary. ThoughTerrile was afraid that she would have totrick kids into joining, in the end 46 teenswere more than willing to join.

Mari Aucapina, 15, had heard aboutthe board game from a friend and knewshe wanted to compete. Though she startedoff slow, she said over time she started tofeel more confident. She felt the beststrategy was to just try. “Whatever comesto your mind, just write it down,” she said.“ Even three letter words, that you thinkare baby words.”

Others like, Sanya Goswami, 14, be-lieved the game would help them in thefuture. “When you write your college ap-plication, it needs to be well written,”Goswami says. “Having a good vocabularyis a big benefit and learning it in a fun wayis even easier.”

Though in the end the Sunnyside teamcame up short to Pomonok, Goldberg andthe teens have no regrets. “From our firstpractice we decided we were going to win,so we worked together every practice,”she said. “Our focus was always the team.”

Are More Diesel Trucks and TrainsHeaded to Sunnyside & LIC?

Communities of Maspeth and Elmhurst Together (COMET) will be holding a Special Meetingabout the Cross Harbor Freight Tunnel Project on Tuesday, November 16th, 7:00 pm, at the FrankKowalinski Post, 61-57 Maspeth Avenue.

The guest speakers will be representatives from the Port Authority who plan to discuss the latestversion of the Cross Harbor initiative which would allow freight from other states to be brought intoQueens by rail and then trucked from freight yards to their destinations throughout the City and LongIsland. The original proposal was to place a large intermodal rail-to-truck operation on the formerPhelps Dodge site in West Maspeth. The plan has now been altered in an attempt to minimize theimpact on surrounding neighborhoods. Communities expected to be adversely affected by the CrossHarbor Project include Maspeth, Middle Village, Glendale, Sunnyside and Hunters Point.

The Cross Harbor initiative, or any part of it, will not only bring more truck traffic into ourcommunities, but it will severely impact the already gridlocked Fresh Pond Terminal that is creatingquality of life and environmental impacts for nearby homeowners.

Residents from Maspeth, Middle Village, Glendale, Sunnyside and Long Island City are urgedto attend this meeting. Our communities are already overburdened with trucks and suffer the effectsof pollution from the Long Island Expressway, Brooklyn Queens Expressway and traffic coming fromLong Island. We need a united voice on this issue to ensure the Port Authority hears us and choosesthe option that will result in the best outcome for our neighborhoods.

SMOOTH SAILINGAs a buyer, you want your offer to be accepted and your

contract to close on schedule. However, in today’s climate, youshould expect some negotiation and submit your offer with thefollowing advice in mind.

The financing contingency in your offer will state your loan totaland anticipated interest rate and approval date. Strongly considerlocking in that rate with the lender, as rates are still very low, andyou’ll avoid any future fluctuations in the market.

Reserve funds now for your settlement costs at closing. Antici-pate anywhere from 2% to 6% of the amount your financing, plusyour down payment, which will be presented in the form of an official(cashier’s) check.

If your down payment funds are not in an immediately liquidaccount, keep things on track by moving funds into your checkingaccount at least a week before closing, so you’re sure that you’ll beable to access the money in advance of the closing date.

Finally, try to avoid a closing date at the end of the month or endof the year, as these are the busiest times for lenders and could causeundue delay in meeting your approval deadline for financing. Speakwith your agent about other factors in crafting your offer andsuccessfully closing on schedule.

PUBLIC LANDS DAYDear Editor,

This Saturday I will join thousands of Americans across thecountry in celebrating the 16th annual National Public Lands Day.

For over 100 years, America’s federal lands have helped to shapeour culture, economy and natural environment, giving us clean water, air, magnificent places to play, and also providing refuge for ournation’s most wondrous wildlife.

One day a year simply isn’t enough to demonstrate America’scommitment to the stewardship of these special lands. That’s whyI’ve asked Joseph Crowley to support the America’s Wildlife Heri-tage Act. I encourage my neighbors in Woodside to do the same. Thisbill will help to ensure that every day our nation is doing its best tosustainably manage these precious resources for generations tocome.

Sincerely,Dr. Jennifer Griffith,

Woodside
